Fuel cell stocks are giving back ground on a risk-off day, and fresh financing news isn't protecting one fuel cell maker from the selling. FuelCell Energy( NASDAQ:FCEL ) stock is at $10.77, down 12%, as the afternoon unfolds. That price sits well below the $12.18 prior close, set on the day the company announced it had completed an export financing package.
The pressure extends across the group. Bloom Energy( NYSE:BE ) is slipping even though its AI power business is growing rapidly. Plug Power( NASDAQ:PLUG ) is lower too. Big tech is dragging on the market as well, with the Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) down 4% after this week's major tech earnings reports.
FuelCell Energy Wraps Up Its $49 Million EXIM Package
FuelCell Energy made an announcement on October 29. It had completed the second tranche of its $49 million financing backed by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM). An approximately $24.7 million balance, before fees, completed the package EXIM approved in June. Proceeds support delivery of five 2.8-megawatt FuelCell Energy Blocks to Gyeonggi Green Energy in South Korea, a site with nearly 60 MW of installed capacity.

According to FuelCell Energy, more than 90% of its supply chain comes from the U.S., and its global installed base is approaching one gigawatt. Chief Financial Officer Matt Latino called the deal a proof point for matching the right capital to the right opportunity.
Good company news often gets ignored when a whole speculative corner of the market sells off. The financing also funds an existing Korean project, so it adds little to FuelCell's data center story or its $3.6 billion backlog of committed and awarded capacity. Over the past month, FuelCell Energy stock has fallen 36%.
Bloom Energy and Plug Power Fall With the Group
Bloom Energy stock is at $200.14, down 10%, a smaller decline than FuelCell's. On its October 22 earnings call, Bloom shared an update. The first power block at a 300 MW site in Vineland, New Jersey, for AI cloud provider Nebius Group( NASDAQ:NBIS ) was ready for customer use. "We will not be the bottleneck," CEO K.R. Sridhar said.
AI cloud and neocloud stocks are selling off on worries about hyperscaler spending, and Bloom is caught in the same downdraft. During the past month, Bloom Energy stock has fallen 31%, a smaller drop than FuelCell's.
Plug Power stock is at $1.36, down 4%. The hydrogen fuel cell company trades at a low share price and has an earnings report coming up. Across the past month, Plug shares are down 29%, the smallest decline of the three.
How the Three Fuel Cell Business Models Differ
FuelCell Energy builds carbonate fuel cells packaged as megawatt-scale energy blocks for behind-the-meter power, while Bloom sells solid oxide Energy Servers that its CEO calls a standard for onsite AI power, and it now turns a profit.
Hydrogen anchors Plug Power's model, which covers forklift fuel cells for warehouses, electrolyzers and the fuel itself, and that mix leaves Plug less tied to AI demand than its two rivals.
Why High-Beta Clean Energy Stocks Swing Harder
Beta measures how much a stock moves compared with the overall market, and a reading above one means bigger swings in both directions. Speculative clean energy names like FuelCell Energy tend to carry high betas because their valuations rest on future growth rather than steady current profits.
On volatile days, investors often sell richly valued or unprofitable stocks first, and this week's jitters over hyperscaler spending have hit anything tied to the AI expansion. For long-term savers, even a modest slice of a portfolio in these stocks can produce oversized swings.
What Comes Next for FuelCell Energy and Its Fuel Cell Peers
Plug Power's upcoming earnings report will be a key test, since management has targeted positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and stock-based compensation (EBITDAS) in Q4 2026. FuelCell Energy faces a different question: whether data center proposals turn into signed contracts as production ramps up.
Supporters point to the shortage of electricity. Bloom lifted its full-year revenue outlook to $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion, and FuelCell calls its factory expansion fully funded. Skeptics may note that FuelCell Energy is still losing money and has issued many new shares, while Plug Power keeps working to shore up its cash position. Tighter financing for capital-intensive clean energy firms would add pressure, so traders may want to watch for changes in credit conditions alongside hyperscaler spending commentary.
Some conservative investors may prefer modest position sizes until the hyperscaler spending debate resolves. Plug Power's report could offer the first fresh read on how the group is holding up.
