Shares of Intel( NASDAQ:INTC ) closed at $65.76, while the average analyst price target sits at $117.71. This difference points to about 79% upside.
The gap opened in a single month. Intel just posted its worst month since at least 1981, falling 45.3% from a September close of $120.23. It now trades about 53% below its June record close of $140.94.
The stock is still up nearly 80% in 2026. That run set up the reversal, because investors had priced Intel as a finished AI turnaround. Two of the stock's three worst months on record came this year, with July down 35.9%.
The latest guidance described something messier: a booming data center business, a shrinking PC business and a damaged factory in Israel. One prominent analyst slashed his target in response, yet the consensus still points far higher. That gap likely reflects targets that haven't yet caught up to the new guidance.
A Record Data Center Quarter Met a Guide Nobody Wanted
Third-quarter revenue rose 21% to $16.5 billion, and non-GAAP EPS reached $0.52. Data center revenue jumped 78% to $7.3 billion, the segment's strongest growth in 15 years.
Then Intel guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion and non-GAAP EPS to $0.25. LSEG consensus had called for $17.1 billion and 43 cents.

The stock fell 28.58% in one session, its worst day since 1974, wiping out roughly $140 billion of market value. At the intraday low of $64.25, the decline reached 30.22%.
Intel Has a Demand Problem and a Supply Problem
The demand problem is PCs. Intel expects PC shipments to fall about 12% this year and another 10% in 2027 as memory shortages raise system costs.
CFO David Zinsner said, "we see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year." Client revenue is guided to fall more than 20% sequentially as PC makers cut inventory.
The supply problem comes down to execution. CEO Lip-Bu Tan said, "I'm disappointed that we were not able to meet strong customer demand in this quarter."
Intel says the Kiryat Gat accident will cost about $300 million of fourth-quarter revenue and accounts for about 200 basis points of the margin guide. The plant is resuming, so that hit looks temporary, but the PC contraction depends on memory prices Intel cannot control.
Even a Slashed Target Sits Above the Stock
Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon called the outlook "(in a word) terrible" and cut his target to $75 from $110. D.A. Davidson downgraded the stock to neutral.
Rasgon's new target implies about 14% upside, against roughly 79% for the consensus. That spread suggests many targets precede the guide and will likely drift lower.
With Hold ratings dominant, the average target works best as a stale reference point. The rating mix was already conservative:

AMD, Qualcomm and PC Makers Sold Off Alongside Intel
Peers fell too. AMD( NASDAQ:AMD ) dropped 10.88% to $504.80, Qualcomm( NASDAQ:QCOM ) fell 11.12% to $164.79, Dell Technologies( NYSE:DELL ) lost 10.8% and HP( NYSE:HPQ ) slipped 9.6%. The market read Intel's PC warning as an industry signal, although Intel's own drop ran far deeper than any peer's.
The broader market barely moved. The S&P 500 is up 10.83% this year and slipped 0.9% over the past month.
The U.S. government's 9.9% stake, bought at $20.47 a share, lost more than $10 billion of value in the selloff but remains worth roughly three times its cost.
What Would Change the Outlook for Intel Stock
Intel's outlook would likely improve if the Israel plant returns to full output, PC demand bottoms in 2027, and data center revenue keeps climbing. Management guided data center revenue to grow mid-teens percent sequentially in the fourth quarter, so that segment is still growing (the picks-and-shovels names driving that expansion, from cooling to networking, are the subject of a free report we put together here).
But the outlook would likely decline if memory shortages stretch the PC slump past 2027 or server supply stays limited, since management expects industry constraints to last into 2028. Intel Foundry also lost $1.85 billion in the third quarter.
AMD offers a useful contrast. Its data center revenue grew 107% in its latest reported quarter at a 56% non-GAAP gross margin, compared with Intel's 38.0% fourth-quarter guide.
The consensus target likely exaggerates near-term upside until analysts update their models. Intel now has two problems on different timelines, and the temporary one is the smaller of the two.
