Drone defense stocks are among the hardest-hit corners of a risk-off market. Unusual Machines( NYSEAMERICAN:UMAC ) stock trades at $15.27, down 12% on the day. That compares with a $17.28 close for Unusual Machines on October 29.
Red Cat Holdings( NASDAQ:RCAT ) stock is at $4.56, down 10%. Ondas Inc.( NASDAQ:ONDS ) stock is at $6.29, down 9%. AeroVironment( NASDAQ:AVAV ) stock is at $126.79, down 6%.
The Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ), which tracks the NASDAQ 100, is down 4% amid this week's Big Tech earnings fallout. Speculative growth stocks typically fall harder than the market on days like this because their valuations rest largely on profits expected years from now.
Why High-Beta Drone Stocks Drop First When Fear Rises
On volatile days, traders tend to sell high-beta stocks (shares that swing more than the market) and richly valued or unprofitable names first. Defense-tech small caps like Unusual Machines get no pass even when their end markets look strong, with Unusual Machines, Red Cat and Ondas each pairing rapid growth with ongoing losses as they scale production.
AeroVironment holds the other end of the group as a larger defense prime guiding to positive generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings for fiscal 2027. That profile helps explain why AeroVironment's decline is the smallest of the four.

Unusual Machines Holds Onto Its 2026 Gain While Peers Sink
Unusual Machines stock is still up 20% year to date (YTD), the only gain among the four. Red Cat stock is down 43% YTD. Ondas stock is down 36% YTD. The largest YTD drop belongs to AeroVironment stock, down 48%.
Fresh company news hasn't protected Ondas. The company said on October 30 that its aerial security portfolio is ready to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) counter-drone grant program, which added $250 million and now covers all 50 states. That expansion is the second phase of a $500 million federal commitment, according to Ondas. Protection at a majority of North American 2026 FIFA World Cup host stadiums relied on Ondas technology, which was also selected to protect Jacksonville Jaguars NFL games.
Chief executive Eric Brock of Ondas stressed that protecting civilian airspace takes more than detecting a threat. More than 3,000 Dronebuster units have been delivered worldwide, Ondas noted.
What Sets Unusual Machines Apart From Its Drone Peers
Unusual Machines operates as a parts supplier, making motors, batteries, headsets and other components for U.S. drone builders under brands such as Fat Shark and Rotor Riot. That model ties the company's success to drone builders' order flow, including demand linked to the Department of War's Drone Dominance program.
Red Cat builds complete platforms, led by the Black Widow reconnaissance drone and Blue Ops uncrewed surface vessels, while Ondas has assembled a system-of-systems portfolio through acquisitions spanning counter-drone tools, loitering munitions and ground vehicles. AeroVironment, the largest of the group, pairs Switchblade loitering munitions with directed-energy and electronic warfare capabilities added through its BlueHalo acquisition.
Drone Stocks Weigh Long-Term Growth Against Short-Term Swings
Research and Markets projects the global unmanned combat aerial vehicle market will grow from $2.9 billion in 2025 to $4.8 billion by 2032, a 7.4% compound annual growth rate. A separate Research and Markets report covers swarm drone defense. It sees the market rising from $3.16 billion in 2026 to $7.69 billion by 2030, a 25% annual pace driven by counter-drone demand and military modernization. Solar-powered drones could grow from $1.2 billion in 2025 to $2.2 billion by 2032, according to a third Research and Markets report. Each of the three reports names AeroVironment among its key players.
Those projections are third-party forecasts that could prove too optimistic, and a strong industry trend won't stop a single small-cap stock from swinging sharply. Long-term savers can keep their exposure to a speculative theme like drones diversified, capturing the trend without leaning on one company's execution (we wrote a free guide on fencing off that kind of fun money with real sizing and exit rules, here). Dilution, customer concentration and slow procurement remain the key risks for the smaller names. Unusual Machines disclosed on August 6 that its largest customer accounted for 42% of Q2 2026 revenue.
Ondas faces a key question: whether its Q3 2026 results, due before an 8:30 a.m. ET conference call on November 12, show the revenue ramp management has promised. Beyond that report, watch for new federal counter-drone funding and defense procurement awards that could shift sentiment toward AeroVironment or the smaller names. Investors may want to keep their share exposure smaller until the risk-off selling in drone stocks ends.
