夕方、タイを見つめる7人の青春↑（2008年11月28日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年11月28日。 夕暮れ時、メコン川沿いの屋台のようなレストランでお気に入りのチャーハンを食べました。 空が、少し赤くなり始めた頃です。 メコン川の水面がうっすらと薄紅色に変化しています。 対岸のタイにもぽつぽつと明かりが灯り始めたところです。 7人の男女が、川岸にいます。 みな、一心に対岸のタイを凝視しています。 青春を感じた一瞬です。【Bon appétit !】 大日本帝国憲法1890年11月29日施行 The Imperial, or Meiji, Constitution was the fundamental law of the Empire of Japan from 1890 until 1947. 一階がお店になっている長屋↑（2008年11月14日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年11月14日。 今日は、サワナケートに来ています。 ヴィエンチャンから南に５００ｋｍほど来た所にあります。 メコン川に架かる新しい橋ができてタイとラオスが直接結ばれるようになり、経済的にどんどん変化している地域です。 今、町中を散歩しています。 一階がお店になっている長屋がありました。 ５店舗以上の店が連なっています。 店舗は、クリーニング店が多いように感じます。 あとは、食堂や小物を売る店です。 歯医者もよく見かけます。 このような長屋はあちこちにあります。 どれも50年以上前の建物だそうです。【Bon appétit !】 無能な上司に仕えて心臓病？ The longer you work for an inconsiderate（思いやりがない）boss, the more damage your heart may suffer. ソーセージの天日干し（2008年11月14日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年11月14日。 サワナケート県の県庁近くに来ています。 県庁は、町中から少し離れた所にあります。 県庁の近くの食堂の庭でソーセージを干しています。 太陽の光をいっぱいに浴び、粗挽きのおいしそうなソーセージです。 ソーセージはいろいろな所で食べる機会があります。 お粥や炒めものの中にソーセージを輪切りにしたものが入っていることがあります。 もちろんソーセージをそのまま焼いたり炒めたりして食べることもあります。 ラオスの北にあるルアンパバンのソーセージは、その美味しさに驚かされることがあります。 ラオスのソーセージはほとんどが粗挽きで、中にハーブや香辛料が入っていることが多いように感じます。 ちょっと酸っぱいソーセージなどもあり、いろいろな味が楽しめるラオスのソーセージです。【Bon appétit !】 免疫反応がてんかんに関与 Researchers have found that a reaction between immune system cells and blood vessels in the brain could play a key role in epilepsy（てんかん）. 古い商家の建物を改装中↑（２００８年１１月１４日、サワンナケート） 今は、２００８年１１月１４日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンから南に５００ｋｍほど来た所にあるサワンナケートにいます。 町の中は、ラオスらしい建物とフランス植民地時代の建物が混在しています。 道を歩いていると、新築中の家がありました。 ２階の部分がバルコニーのようになっていて、なんとなくフランス風です。 今時、フランス植民地風の建物を作るのでしょうか。 果たして、新築ではないようです。 やはり、フランス植民地時代に建てられた建物だそうです。 商店の作りになっているとのことです。【Bon appétit !】 落書きやゴミは犯罪を助長する The "Broken Windows Theory" is based on the idea that urban disorder such as broken windows and graffiti（落書き）encourages petty（軽微な）crime. 最近まで製粉所だった建物↑（2008年11月14日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年11月14日。 朝の散歩で街の中を歩いています。 メコン川沿いの道を上流に向かって歩いていたら、食堂の裏側に立派な建物が見えました。 食堂の女将さんに断って敷地内に入ってみました。 近づいてみると、かなり古い建物ですが、フランス植民地時代の雰囲気があります。 おそらく、80年くらい前の建物だと思われます。 人が住む家として建てられたものと思われますが、最近まで製粉所として使われていたそうです。【Bon appétit !】 ケネディー暗殺は1963年11月22日 The assassination of John F. 海藻スープ、肉野菜炒め、ラープ、カエルのから揚げ等↑（2008年11月13日） 今は、2008年11月13日。 昨日から、ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍのところにあるサワンナケートに来ています。 今日のお昼は今まで行ったことがないところへ行ってみることにします。 海藻と豆腐のスープ、肉と野菜の炒め物、細かく刻んだ牛肉とハーブを炒めたもの（ラープ）、カエルのから揚げなどを頼みました。 ご飯はおこわ（カオニャオ）を頼みました。 ラープとスープだけの昼食になることもよくありますので、今日は御馳走です。【Bon appétit !】 革新的移植が成功 The world's first tissue-engineered whole organ transplant - performed using a windpipe（気管）made from the patient's own cells - appears to have been a success. 子供のころの夢
2008年11月9日のブログで「夢が人生をつくる」ということを書きました。子供のころの夢覚えていますか？私は、列車の運転手になることが夢でした。どの時点で、この夢を捨てたのでしょうか？世界中を旅行する旅行家になりたい、とも思っていました。音楽が好きだったり、映画や演劇を見るのが好きだったりしたのですが、これを夢にすることは初めから諦めていたような気がします。成長するにつれて、現実的な夢になっていきます。学生の頃は、世界的な食料危機。人類を飢餓から救うことが夢になり、これは職業選びの方向性を決め、人生を決めてきたような気がします。でも、どうして現実的な路線にシフトしていったのでしょうか？好きな旅行や鉄道や音楽に対する夢をどうして持たなかったのか、社会人になるときに忘れ去ってしまったのか、今になってみると、不思議に思います。でも、最近、子供のころの夢が今の夢になりつつあるような気がしてきました。やはり、夢が人生をつくるようです。皆さんはどう思われますか？【Bon appétit !】 骨髄移植でエイズが治癒 It appears that an American man living in Germany has been "cured" of HIV following a bone marrow（骨髄）transplant to treat his leukemia（白血病）. ラオスの熱風船の精霊流し
空に舞い上がった熱風船、左下に屋根、右上に月↑（2008年11月12日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年11月12日。 ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍの所にあるサワンナケートに来ています。 メコン川にかかる2番目の橋がこの町にあり、タイーラオスーベトナムが直接陸路でつながりました。 橋ができてからまだ2年たっていませんが、外国資本がかなり入りこんでいるようです。 今日は11月の満月の日で、タイでは精霊流しを行います。 ラオスでも精霊流しを行いますが、ひと月早い10月の満月の日、出安居の日に行います。 ここラオスでも、ラオスに住むタイ人が今日は精霊流しを行っています。 ローソクに火をともした灯篭がメコン川を流れて来ます。 灯篭のほかに、熱風船のようなものを空に飛ばしている人もいます。 大きな紙袋のようなものを逆さにし、中の空気を火で温めます。 しばらくすると、熱気球のようになって空に舞い上がります。 私も一つ飛ばしてみることにしました。 直径６０ｃｍくらい高さ１ｍくらいの紙袋を逆さにして、取り付けてある固形燃料に火を付けます。 中の空気が温まり、空高く舞い上がりました。 メコン川の上を越えてどんどん飛んでいきます。 対岸のタイの方へ飛んで行きます。【Bon appétit !】 心臓移植は同性から A study of more than 18,000 heart transplants performed in the US over the last decade has found that patients have a better chance of long-term survival and a lower risk of rejection if the organ is from a donor of the same sex. お祭りの日の風船売り↑（2008年11月11日、タートルアン、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年11月11日。 夕方の空気にひんやりとしたものを感じるようになってきました。 Tシャツ1枚でも大丈夫ですが、ラオスの人は寒い寒いを連発するようになってきました。 夕方、自転車で黄金の塔があるタートルアンへ行ってみました。 ちょうどラオス最大のお祭りの最中です。 会場の外のあちこちで風船売りが風船を売っています。 ドラえもんやウルトラマンの風船もあります。 ラオス最大と言われているこのお祭りは、明日の大読経会と托鉢で幕を占めます。【Bon appétit !】 ロシアの潜水艦で事故 Twenty people died on Saturday in Russia's worst naval accident since a nuclear submarine sank and killed all 118 crew members in 2000. ラオスの夜のレストラン
レストランの窓から見たメインストリート↑（2008年11月1日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は2008年11月1日。 今日の夕飯は、ラオスでは珍しいファーストフード風の食堂へ入ってみました。 メニューには、ハンバーガー、フライドチキン、ステーキ、フィッシュ＆チップスが並びます。 ラオスにもこのようなアメリカ人が食べるようなものを出す店がでてきました。 出てくる料理も、冷凍したフライを温めなおしたような感じがして、いかにもインスタントっぽい味になっています。 それでも、せっかくの料理ですので、感謝していただきます。 マクドナルドやケンタッキーフライドチキンのようなチェーーン店はラオスにはありません。 道路側がガラス張りになっていて、店の中から外がよく見えます。 なぜか「深夜特急」という言葉が浮かんできました。【Bon appétit !】 マンモスが歩き回る日 Researchers in Japan have developed a new cloning technique that could one day bring extinct species back to life. ラオスのKFC
KFCのチキン、パパイヤサラダ、生春巻き↑（2008年11月6日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年11月6日。 今日は最近では初めて一日中雨が降らない日となりました。 やっと乾季らしくなって来たようです。 昼食に、KFCへ行くことにしました。 KFCと言っても、ケンタッキー・フライド・チキンではありません。 このKFCは、クービエン通りにあるお店で、クービエン・フライド・チキンと呼ばれています。 いつもたくさんの人で賑わっています。 今日は、たくさんの女子学生やOLがいてとても賑やかでした。 フライドチキンとフレンチフライ、パパイヤサラダ、生春巻きを頼みます。 フライドポテトやチキンは脂っこさがあり、パパイヤサラダはとても辛く、また、生春巻きはあっさりとした味で、それぞれがうまく調和して、とても美味しく頂きました。【Bon appétit !】 手にはたくさんのバクテリア According to researchers, the typical human hand is home to more than 150 species of bacteria, a far higher number than previously thought. 今、私はラオスに住んでいます。 ラオス語を話せるようになりたいと日々思っています。 ラオス語の勉強をするたびに、少し前に学んだ単語をすっかり忘れていることを思い知らされています。 でも、私は、「単語を覚えるのが苦手」とは決して思いません。 必ず、「自分は単語を覚えることが得意だ。ラオスが話せる」と思うようにしています。 自分の想いは実現すると私は信じているからです。 自分が今日あるのは、昨日の想いからだと思っています。 同様に、 今日の想いが、明日の人生をかたちづくると思っています。 今、「私はラオス語が話せる」という想いを持っていれば、必ず実現すると思っています。 「人生は、自分の心の創造物」なんだと思います。【Bon appétit !】 オバマ氏第44代アメリカ合衆国大統領に After months of campaigning, the most groundbreaking（草分けの、革新的な）election in recent US history ended last night with the momentous（重大な、重要な）selection of the country's first African-American president. 川沿いの店で憩う↑（2008年11月4日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年11月4日。 今日も、日中短時間ですが雨が降りました。 本来であれば11月は、乾季の真っ盛りで、からっとした過ごしやすい毎日になるはずです。 先週に引き続き今週も、毎日雨が降るのでしょうか？ 夕方、久しぶりにメコン川沿いの店へ行ってみました。 夏の洪水の時に積んだ土嚢がまだあちこちに残っています。 川沿いの屋台の店は、不要になった丸太で作ったような感じで、いつ足元の床が壊れて下に落ちるかドキドキしながら食事を楽しむことができます。 今日も、テーブルを囲んで人々が憩いのひと時を過ごしています。 メコン川（メーナムコーン、直訳するとコーン川）の水面を見おろし、対岸のタイの家の明かりを見、刻々と変化する空の色を見ながら過ごすひと時は、至福のひと時です。【Bon appétit !】 夏時間と心臓病 Hospital emergency rooms may be a little less full today, following the end of daylight saving time (DST) in the US. お布施する女性↑（208年11月3日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年11月3日。 ルアンパバンに来ています。 朝の散歩に出ることにします。 ルアンパバンの朝の名物といえば、托鉢。 たくさんのお坊さんが、オレンジ色の袈裟を着て、街を歩きます。 お坊さんは、街の人のお布施によって支えられています。 観光客も加わってたくさんの人が道端に座って道行くお坊さんにお布施をしています。 観光客にお布施用のおこわやバナナ、お菓子などを売る商売も成り立っています。 観光客がいないような所を歩いていたら、一人のおばあさんが道端に座っていました。 通り過ぎる僧侶一人ひとりにお布施をしています。 毎日毎日欠かすことなく続けているのでしょう。【Bon appétit !】 ゴジラ The first Godzilla film opened in Japan more than 50 years ago, and its 20,000-ton star, an enormous lizard, has been smashing up cities and towns ever since. 建設中の首相府（左奥）と凱旋門↑（2008年10月21日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月21日。 今日は良く晴れ渡り、暑い一日となりました。 正午頃の凱旋門は、暑さのため人があまり歩いていません。 凱旋門の下の日陰でベンチに座って涼んでいる人がたくさんいます。 凱旋門の周りは、高い建物がなく空がとても大きく広がっています。 こんなに広い空があるなんて、なんて素敵なんでしょう！と思わず口に出してしまいます。 ところが、首相府の建物が建設中でその巨大な姿が浮かび上がってきました。 空が、その部分だけ狭くなって、せっかくの雰囲気が壊されるような気がします。 こうして、発展とともに景観が失われていくのでしょうか？【Bon appétit !】 システィナ礼拝堂 In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. ラオスの蛇スープ
蛇のスープ↑（2008年10月25日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月25日。 「元気をつけてあげよう」とラオス人が私を家に呼んでくれました。 奥さんの手料理です。 ウナギも小鳥もコオロギもとても上手に料理します。 奥さんが料理が出来ないものが一つあります。 蛇の料理です。 蛇料理は旦那さんの出番です。 台所で、生きた蛇をさばいて、鍋に入れてスープにします。 内臓も含めて入れます。 皮もついたままですので、食べるのにはなかなか勇気が要ります。 私は、すっぽんやあんこうの皮ですら苦手ですので、皮つきの蛇は…。 でも、御呼ばれした手前、おいしいおいしいと言ってかなりいただきました。 あまりおいしいと言ったのでもう一杯つがれてしまいました。 蛇の種類はわかりませんが、日本で食べたマムシに比べて、ずっと歯ごたえがあり、鳥のささみを思いっきり頑丈にしたような感じです。【Bon appétit !】 揚子江（長江） Known in China as Chang Jiang, the Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world.
