ラオスの紙の原料
紙の原料となる干された木の皮（2008年3月27日、ナン郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月27日。 今日は、ルアンパバンの南西方向にあるナン郡に来ています。 ナン郡からルアンパバンの町に戻る途中、車で走っていたら、家の庭でかんぴょうのようなものを干している光景に出合いました。 聞いてみると、紙の原料を干しているのだそうです。 ということは、こうぞ、みつまたの類ということになるのでしょうか？ 日光に干して、木の皮を漂白しているのでしょう。 紙を梳いて、干している光景にも出会いました。 このあたり、紙を作っている家が連なっているようです。【Bon appétit !】 習慣の違い Travelers who fail to familiarize themselves with a region's customs before visiting that area risk inadvertently offending or insulting their hosts. ラオスの川の中州の斜めの木
水流で斜めになっている木↑（2008年、4月14日、カンボジア国境、チャンパサック県） 今は、2008年4月14日。 今日は、ラオスの最南端、カンボジア国境に来ています。 メコン川を船で下り、国境近くへ行きます。 ここには、川イルカの生息地。 ピンクドルフィンと呼ばれる川イルカが次から次へと姿を見せます。 川の中州にある木々が、みな斜めになっています。 雨季の増水時に、木は水面下に潜ってしまいます。 川の水の流れがあるため、中州に立っている木は下流の方向に向かって斜めになっています。【Bon appétit !】 知的所有権 Intellectual property is an umbrella term for the various legal entitlements（権利の保有）associated with certain names, literary works, recorded media, and inventions. ラオスの村での食事
民家のテーブルを借りて食べた食事↑（2008年5月6日、ちゃんぽん郡、サワンナケート県） 今は、2008年5月6日。 サワンナケートの町からみると南の方角にあるチャンポン郡に来ました。 今日は、あぜ道や田んぼの中を何キロも歩きます。 一日の行程を終え、村の食堂でのどを潤します。 以前この食堂を訪れた時は、メニューにカエルの串焼きしかなく驚かされました。 それから郡の中心部に戻ります。 周りは真っ暗です。 ディナーにしようと思うのですが、数少ないレストランがみな閉まっています。 おかずを売っている屋台が出ていましたのでそこでおかずを購入。 民家の家の外にあるテーブルを借りてそこで食事にしました。 食器類を貸してくれたので、なんとなくディナーっぽくなりました。【Bon appétit !】 キング牧師の1963年8月28日の演説 King was a leading figure in the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 60s. His "I Have a Dream" speech was delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. ラオスの泥んこ水牛
泥んこ遊びを終えた水牛↑（2008年5月8日、サイブリー郡、サワンナケート県） 今は、2008年5月8日。 サワンナケートから南の方へ向かいます。 今は、乾季作米の収穫時期。 あちこちで、稲の刈り取りが行われています。 また、あちこちで水牛が水溜りの中で泥水浴びをしています。 泥水から起き上がった水牛が、大きく背伸びをしています。 背中の泥が太陽の光を浴びて光っています。 ラオスでは水牛はまだまだ農耕用になくてはならない存在です。 また、食材としても欠かせません。 皮、脳みそから内臓まで、あらゆる部分が食材となっています。【Bon appétit !】 宇宙、時間 In physics, space-time is a four-dimensional continuum（連続体）consisting of three dimensions in space and one dimension in time. ラオスの若いコブ牛
２頭の若いコブ牛↑（２００８年５月７日、ソーンコ－ン郡、サワンナケート） 今は、２００８年５月７日。 今日は、サワンナケートに来ています。 みんなで、カオピヤック（米粉麺）やカオチーパテ（フランスパンサンドイッチ）の朝食をとり、村を訪問することにします。 この村に行く道路はありません。 ボートが唯一の交通手段です。 ４０分ほど川を遡って着岸します。 川岸から、急な崖を上ると、村に出ます。 道を歩いていると、２頭のきれいなコブ牛がいます。 まだ、若い牛です。 とてもきれいなので、しばらく見とれてしまいました。 コブ牛は、ラオスではよく見かけます。 インドをはじめアジア各地にいるそうです。 背中にコブがあって、のどの下側に皮が垂れ下がって伸びています。 暑さに強い牛だそうです。【Bon appétit!】 太陽光電池で８２時間飛行 A UK-built solar-powered plane has set the unofficial world record for longest flight time by an unmanned aircraft. The ultra-lightweight Zephyr-6 stayed aloft（空中に、飛んで）for 82 hours and 37 minutes in a demonstration for the US military. Built from carbon fiber and powered by paper-thin solar panels, the craft weighs a mere 66 lb (30 kg) and flies at an altitude of more than 60,000 ft (18,000 m). Rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries store energy from the sun throughout the day and power the propellers at night. A plane that can remain aloft indefinitely（無期限に）using solar power and can fly over the same area all day would be invaluable in military applications.

ラオスのアイスクリーム売り
大きなアイスクリームを小分けにしている処↑（2008年5月24日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年5月24日。 今日は、あちこちの村で行われているロケット祭りを見に来ています。 次から次へとロケットが天に向かって勢いよく打ち上げられています。 会場の田んぼにアイスクリーム売りのおじさんが来て、アイスクリームを売っています。 ベルをチリンチリンと鳴らしています。 自転車の荷台に、アイスボックスをくくりつけて、その中にアイスクリームが入っています。 アイスクリーム売りのおじさんが、中から大きなアイスクリームを取り出しました。 それを、8等分位に小分けしています。 その小分けしたものを売っています。 次から次へと子供たちが買いに来ますので、アイスクリーム売りのおじさんは大喜びです。 普段ラオスで良く見かけるアイスクリーム売りは、今日見たアイスクリーム売りとは異なります。 オートバイの脇にアイスクリームを入れる赤い色の大きなアイスボックスが作りつけられている専用の乗り物に乗っています。 音楽を鳴らしていますので、遠くからでもすぐわかります。 このアイスクリーム屋さんのアイスは、タイ製です。【Bon appétit !】 匂いでガンの診断 It is widely known throughout the medical world that skin cancers emit certain odors, and recent studies have shown that dogs are able to detect tumors（腫瘍）by sniffing out（嗅ぎつける、見つけ出す）this scent. The specific odor, according to a team of US chemists, has now been isolated, and they have quantified the compounds involved in the smell. By creating "odor profiles" for the different types of skin cancer, the team hopes to revolutionize the diagnosis of such cancers. Currently, diagnosing skin cancer means taking biopsies（生体組織）to a lab for testing, but a machine that is able to identify cancer’s scent would be a fast, non-invasive（非侵入性の、健康な組織を冒さない）detection（検出、発見）tool.

ラオスのベトナム料理
ベトナム人が経営する食堂で出てきた料理↑（2008年5月5日、タケク、カムワン県） 今は、2008年5月5日。 今朝、ヴィエンチャンを車で出発して、５００ｋｍほど南にあるサワンナケートに向かっているところです。 正午をまわったところで、カムワン県のタケクに着きました。 この街はフランス統治時代の雰囲気が残っています。 市場の一角に、ベトナム人が経営する食堂が並んでいます。 そのうちの一つに入ります。 この店は、メニューはなく、座れば自動的に料理が出てきます。 竹の子の煮物、魚の甘辛煮、ゆでた豚モツ、カリカリに上げた豚肉、空芯菜の炒め物、もやしの漬物、ハーブ、インゲン等の野菜、魚のスープ、辛子みそ、海老醤等が出てきます。 味は、好みが分かれるところです。【Bon appétit !】 人と動物の混血 Once solely a concept of science-fiction, the parahuman, or human-animal hybrid, has recently entered the realm（領域、範囲）of reality. Efforts to combine genes from different species for medical and industrial purposes are now fairly common. Though such research could prove useful for the production of drugs and transplant-ready organs, it has raised numerous ethical, moral, and legal issues.

ラオスの麺カオプン
訪問した家でふるまわれたカオプン↑（2008年5月24日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年5月24日。 今は、ロケット祭りの季節。 雨乞いの祭りという説があり、ロケットが龍のように空高く舞い上がります。 今日は、そのロケット祭りを見にヴィエンチャン郊外の村に来ています。 家に招かれ、食事をごちそうになります。 ロケット祭りの日にだけ出される黄色いお酒がふるまわれます。 そうめんのような麺が出てきました。 これはカオプンと呼ばれています。 米粉から作られた麺です。 冷や麦のような感じです。 お椀に麺を入れ、その上に野菜等を乗せます。 キャベツ、香草、ミント等のハーブ、バナナの花等を乗せます。 そして最後に汁をかけます。 汁は白みがかったトウガラシ色で、辛いような甘いような感じです。 たいていはココナッツミルク味です。 ルアンパバンのカオプンは、澄んだ汁をかける場合が多く、野菜類のほかにモツ肉をたくさん入れます。 ラオスの人はカオプンがとても好きで、何か行事があると必ずカオプンがふるまわれます。【Bon appétit !】 米国におけるはしかの増加 The number of measles（はしか）cases in the US has reached its highest point in more than a decade, a trend that is largely the result of parents refusing vaccinations for their children. Recent questions regarding vaccine safety and links to autism（自閉症）have led many parents to leave their children unvaccinated. While the number of cases remains relatively small, just 131 so far, there were only 42 cases reported in all of 2007. Health officials insist that the vaccinations are safe and that there is no strong scientific evidence linking either the measles vaccine or a mercury-based preservative（防腐剤）once commonly used in vaccines to autism.

ラオスのトラクター
村の中で停車中のトラクター↑（2008年3月12日、サントン郡、ヴィエンチャン特別市） 今は、2008年3月12日。 今日は、ビエンチャンから、西へ６０ｋｍほど行ったところにあるサントン郡へ来ています。 のどが渇いたので、村の中にある店に入り、瓶入りの豆乳（商品名：ヴァイタミルク）を飲むことにします。 お店の椅子に座って豆乳を飲んでいると、荷車をつけた耕運機がやってきて、停まりました。 耕運機はあちこちで目にします。 以前は水牛が田んぼを耕していましたが、最近では水牛に代わって耕運機が増えつつあります。 8月22日のブログの写真でも、道の脇に停まっている耕運機が写っています。 また、耕運機は、自家用車代わりにもなっています。 耕運機の後ろに付けた荷台にたくさんの人が乗って移動しています。 水牛もまだまだたくさんいて活用されていますが、耕運機も増えつつあるラオスです。【Bon appétit !】 食虫植物 Usually found in places with thin or nutrient-poor soil, carnivorous plants（食虫植物）derive some or most of their sustenance（食物）by attracting, trapping, and digesting insects, small animals, and protozoans（原生動物）. Though there are hundreds of species of carnivorous plants, they all attract and trap prey using any of 5 basic mechanisms: pitfall（落とし穴、わな）traps, flypaper（ハエ取り紙）traps, snap（素早くつかむ、速射する）traps, bladder（袋状組織）traps, and lobster-pot（エビ取りかご）traps. Just two species are classified as “active” snap traps; one is the Venus flytrap（ハエトリソウ、ハエジゴク）.

ラオスの便利な乗り物ソンテーウ
バス代わりに利用されているソンテーウ↑（2007年9月21日、ナンバック郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2007年9月21日。 今日は、世界遺産に指定されている古都ルアンパバンの北の方角にあるナンバック郡に来ています。 ルアンパバンの町から2時間半ほど車に乗って行きます。 車で走っていると、トラックの荷台に人が乗っているような乗り物をよく見かけます。 ソンテーウと呼ばれていて、トゥクトゥクより大きく、たくさんの人が乗っています。 １００ｋｍ以上の長距離を運転していることもよくあり、路線バスのように利用されていることも多いようです。 荷物は荷台又は屋根の上に乗せますが、屋根の上に人が乗っていることもよくあります。【Bon appétit !】 Subvertising Subvertising is the practice of making spoofs（もじり、ちゃかし、いたずら） or parodies of corporate and political advertisements. Taking its name from a combination of the words "subvert（転覆させる、倒す）" and "advertising," the act is often intended to sabotage its targets by presenting easily recognizable images that are shocking upon second glance. Still, some critics say subverts, which are often modified versions of existing images, merely increase public awareness of the original symbols.

ラオスの村の中
村の中にある高床式の家々↑（2008年3月27日、ナン郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月27日。 今日は、ルアンパバンの町から南西の方角にあるナン郡へ行ってみることにします。 車は、アップダウンを繰り返しながら、山々の間を縫って進みます。 どの山も、ゴムの木の植林をするために相当広い面積が切り開かれています。 森林破壊という言葉がぴったりの光景です。 あと、2年もすれば砂漠化が始まりそうな感じです。 訪問した村では、結婚式のお祝いをしていました。 我々も、お祝いの席に入って一緒に祝うように誘ってきます。 お祝いの席でもあり、ご一緒したかったのですが、スケジュールの関係で丁重にお断りします。 村の代表の方から、「今日は日本の人が来てくれとてもうれしい。良い結婚祝いになった。」というような言葉をいただきました。 この村は、真ん中に小川が流れています。 小川では水浴びをしたり、洗濯をしたりしています。 小川の周りに高床式の家が配置されています。 家の壁は、ラオスの一般的な家とおなじで、木の皮を編んだようなもので作られています。 とても風通しが良い作りです。 どの家も大きな作りで、日本のような狭苦しい家と比べてどちらが幸せか考えさせられます。【Bon appétit !】 学生の自殺願望 The results of a recent web-based survey of college students underscore（強調する）the need for accessible mental health resources on university campuses. According to the survey of 26,000 students at 70 universities and colleges, about 15 percent of students have had suicidal thoughts at some point, while five percent have attempted to take their own lives. Most of those surveyed said that these suicidal episodes lasted a day or less and cited（引用する、例として挙げる）emotional and physical pain, problems with romantic relationships, and academic pressures as reasons for their suicidal thoughts.

ラオスのパラボラアンテナ
村の中の大きなパラボラアンテナ↑（2008年5月15日、ポンサイ郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年5月15日。 今日は、ルアンパバンの町から車で2時間くらいのところにあるポンサイ郡を訪問しました。 未舗装の道路を進むため、車のスピードは上がりません。 村の中に入ると家の脇に大きなパラボラアンテナがありました。 実は、ラオスは、どこに行ってもパラボラアンテナが目につきます。 日本は小さなアンテナをよく見かけますがラオスでは見かけません。 ラオスの場合は衛星放送テレビを見ますので、直径２ｍ位のパラボラアンテナを使うのでしょう。 ラオスにおけるテレビの普及率は、どうも５割位のようです。 もっとも電気が来ない地域もたくさんありますので、全国レベルでの普及率が本当に5割もあるのかよくわかりません。 電気の普及率は6割位といわれています。 電気は、ラオスが外貨を獲得する大きな手段となっています。 水力発電所を作って、電気を近隣諸国に売却しています。 国内への送電線が未整備のため、国内では、電気がないところが至る所にあります。 県庁所在地はさすがに電気が来ていますが、郡レベルになると、電気が来ていないところがいくつもあります。 【Bon appétit !】 睡眠不足と高血圧 Poor quality sleep and too little of it increases the risk of high blood pressure in teens. In a study of 238 teens, 14 percent were found to have high or borderline-high blood pressures. Volunteers filled out sleep diaries and had their movements measured to determine whether they were actually asleep. Teens need nine hours of sleep a night, but the study participants averaged less than eight, and sixteen percent of them had low sleep efficiency, meaning that they had trouble either falling or staying asleep. The study authors also found that poor quality sleep was more consistently associated with prehypertension than a shortened sleep period.

ラオスの黄色い麺ミー
揚げた豚肉、餃子が入っているミー↑ 今は、2007年3月29日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍほどの所にあるサワンナケートに来ています。 夕飯は、麺類を食べることにしました。 米粉から作った麺をいつも食べているので、今日は中華麺に似ているミーと呼ばれる黄色い麺を食べることにしました。 この麺は、ラーメンに似ていて、実際、焼きそばやかた焼きそばにすると中華麺と同じ味になります。 汁麺は、やはりダシが違うので、日本で食べるラーメンの味とは異なります。 サワンナケートで一番おいしいミーを出すといわれる小さな食堂に入り注文しました。 出てきたミーの中には、ワンタンの皮のようなもの、餃子のようなもの、まわりをカリカリに上げた豚肉等が入っていました。【Bon appétit !】 ライトセラピー Sometimes used to treat skin conditions, mood disorders, and sleep disorders, light therapy consists of exposure to specific wavelengths of light for a prescribed amount of time. Visible violet light is used to activate a naturally occurring compound（化合物）that kills acne（にきび）-causing bacteria, while sunlight-mimicking light boxes and other infrared lights are used to treat seasonal affective disorder, a winter-related depressive disorder.

ラオスの麺カオピヤックセン
イカが入っているカオピヤックセン↑ 今は、2007年12月15日。 今日は、ラオスの北５２ｋｍのところにある村に来ました。 モン族が多く住んでいる村です。 村人には色白の人が多く、男性も女性も顔立ちが整っています。 昼頃村を出発して、ヴィエンチャンに向かいました。 途中、道端の食堂で昼食をとりました。 メニューは、ヴェトナムの麺フゥーとカオピヤックと呼ばれる麺。 カオピヤックを頼みます。 カオピヤックは一般的にはお粥を指しますので、麺を指す時にはカオピヤックセンと言います。 普通の食堂は、お粥は扱っていませんので、センは省略して単にカオピヤックと呼びます。 カッピヤックに使用する麺は、お米の粉から作る真っ白な麺です。 柔らかめに茹でて、揚げた豚肉を入れたり、鶏肉を入れたりします。 豆腐のような形に固めた豚の血の塊を入れることもあります。 今日のカオピヤックには、珍しいことに、イカ、魚団子が入っています。フゥーに入れる半生の牛肉も入っています。 また、カオピヤックには通常付いてこないハーブや野菜の皿も出してくれました。 道端にあるかやぶきの掘っ立て小屋の食堂で食べた満足の一品でした。【Bon appétit !】 妊娠中絶とメンタルヘルス The mental health risks associated with abortions have long been debated, but the American Psychological Association is now reporting that having one elective abortion of an unwanted pregnancy does not increase the risk of developing mental health problems such as depression. A panel appointed by the group found that the relative risk of mental health problems for adult women who have a single elective abortion is no greater than for those who carry the pregnancy to term, though it appears that women who have mental health problems before becoming pregnant are at greater risk following an abortion.

ラオスの麺「カオソイ」
カオソイ（肉みそ麺） 今は、2008年3月27日。 ルアンパバンにいます。 朝食は、カオソイを食べることにします。 ラオスにはいろいろな麺がありますが、ルアンパバンでは、カオソイを必ず食べることにしています。 ルアンパバンのカオソイはおいしい気がします。 おいしいといっても、店によってかなり味は異なります。 カオソイは、米粉から作られた麺の一種です。 幅広の麺を使用することが多く、辛い肉みそが麺の上に乗っています。 みそラーメンに慣れている日本人には食べやすい麺です。 麺と一緒に香草やハーブ、木の葉、生いんげん等を盛ったお皿が付いてきます。 生の唐辛子も盛られています。 これらを麺の中に入れたり、そのまま食べたりします。 おこし（ポン菓子を固めたようなもの）を注文して、これをカオソイの中に入れて食べると、また、違った風味の味を楽しめます。 ルアンパバン名物ですが、ビエンチャンでも食べることができます。 試してみて下さいね。【Bon appétit !】 肌に潤いを与えるクリームに発がん性？ Researchers are reporting that common skin moisturizers（保湿用クリーム）cause skin tumors in mice. Rates of non-melanoma skin cancers increased between 24 and 95 percent in hairless mice treated with moisturizing cream and exposed to heavy doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, though these rates dropped sharply when certain suspect ingredients were left out of the cream. Many dermatologists（皮膚病学者）question the importance of this study in relation to humans and are drawing attention to the fact that mouse skin is significantly more sensitive than human skin and that the mice were exposed to UV radiation doses exceeding what a person would normally encounter in his lifetime.

ラオスのマークペット
唐辛子という名前のレストランの看板↑（2008年7月6日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年7月6日。 セタテラート通りを歩いています。 セタテラート通りは、ヴィエンチャンの町中をメコン川と並行に走る通りで、川沿いの道の次に位置する通りです。 道沿いに木が植わっていて、落ち着いた雰囲気の道です。 この道に沿って大きなお寺がいくつか連なっています。 途中、唐辛子（ラオス語で「マークペット」）の看板がありました。 レストランの看板です。 ラオス人はトウガラシ好きです。 どの食堂にもいろいろなトウガラシがおいてあります。 唐辛子そのもの、一味唐辛子のようなもの、ラー油のようなもの、唐辛子入りケチャップ等さまざまです。 どんな料理にもこれらの唐辛子をたっぷりと入れます。 麺類やお粥の色が真っ赤になるくらい入れます。 食堂のテーブルに置いてある生の唐辛子に、海老味噌をつけて食べている人もよく見かけます。【Bon appétit !】 1945年8月15日 Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) celebrates the surrender of Japan, the last Axis（枢軸国）power to yield（負ける）during WWII, and the subsequent end of the war. Though Japan's surrender was announced on Aug 15, the terms were not signed until Sept 2.
