ラオスのヨーグルト工場
計量カップや秤が活躍するヨーグルト工場↑（2008年10月23日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月23日。 ヴィエンチャンにあるヨーグルト工場に来ました。 ラオスでも数少ない、国産の工業製品です。 工業製品と言っても、オートメーションではありません。 つぶした果物を計量カップで入れ、秤で全体の重さをはかっています。 手作りの製品です。 ふたをするのも、ラベルを張るのも、手を使って一つづつ丁寧に行っています。 ラオスには牛乳がありませんので、原料となる牛乳は、お隣のタイからメコン川に架かる友好橋を越えて持ってきます。 牛乳だけで作っていて、砂糖を加えたり、粉乳を加えることはありません。 果物ヨーグルトの場合は、生の果物を潰して入れています。 イチゴのように生のイチゴがない場合は、冷凍イチゴを使用しているとのことです。【Bon appétit !】 インフルエンザの予防 With cold and flu season fast approaching, researchers are warning people to beware of their refrigerator doors as well as TV remotes, telephones, light switches, salt and pepper shakers, and even doorknobs. ラオスのATM
道端にポツンとある出来たばかりのATM↑（2008年10月25日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月25日。 アパートのすぐ近くを散歩していたら、ATMがあるので驚きました。 確か昨日の朝にはなかったような気がしましたが…。 この半年ほど、あちこちでATMが備え付けられるようになりました。 コンビニやレストランの入り口、大きな建物の入り口などにあります。 また、何もない道沿いにポツンと建っていることもあります。 1年前には、銀行くらいにしか設置されていないような感じでしたが、どんどん増えているという感じです。 ラオスのお札はピン札がなく、想像を絶するようなしわくちゃなお札やセロテープでつないだようなお札が多いので、ATMで大丈夫なのでしょうか？ クレジットカードのキャッシングができるので、外国人も良く利用しています。【Bon appétit !】 100トン以上の象牙入札 Southern Africa’s first officially sanctioned（認可する）ivory sale in nearly a decade has many environmental groups worried that it will encourage poachers（密猟者）involved in the illegal ivory trade, but the UN body that sanctioned this auction believes that data collected after the last legal sale in 1999 proves otherwise. ラオスのミックス野菜
ミックス野菜↑（2008年10月23日、ヴィエンチャン 今は、2008年10月23日。 ラオスの人はいろいろな野菜を食べます。 道端にあるような草も、野菜に早変わりです。 木の葉っぱなんかも出てきます。 ハーブ類も一緒に出てきます。 ミントはかなりの量が出てきます。 ナスやインゲンは生で食べます。 今まで気づかなかったのですが、今日初めてミックス野菜を見つけました。 袋の中にレタス、キャベツ、タマネギ、トマトその他いろいろな野菜を入れた商品が売られています。 ドレッシングまで入っているものもあります。 日本でこそ数年前まではあまり見かけませんでしたので、ラオスで見かけたのは驚きです。 ニーズがあるのでしょう。 どのような人が購入するのでしょう。【Bon appétit !】 アマラとカマラ Amala and Kamala were two so-called "wolf-girls" - feral（野生の）children allegedly raised by a family of wolves before being found in 1920 near Calcutta, India, at eight and 18 months old, respectively. ラオスの寺の妻
寺の妻の部分の飾り↑（2008年10月25日、インペン寺、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月25日。 朝方、アパートの近所を散歩することにします。 メコン川沿いの道から一本内側に入ったセタテラート通りを歩きます。 セラテラート通りにはたくさんのお寺が連なっています。 初めにあるのがインペン寺。 朝日を受けて、切妻屋根の寺の妻にある飾りがキラキラと光ってとてもきれいです。 キンキラキンのお寺は、見慣れると。それはそれでなかなか趣があるものです。【Bon appétit !】 中年の自殺者増加 Suicide rates in the US have risen for the first time in more than a decade. ラオスの料理
コオロギ、ウナギ、小鳥、空芯菜、ナマズ等の料理↑（2008年10月25日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月25日。 今日の夕食に、ラオス人が招待してくれました。 奥さんが料理を作って出してくれました。 コオロギのから揚げ、香辛料と一緒に煮たウナギ、小鳥のから揚げ、空芯菜の炒め物、香辛料を一緒に蒸したウナギ、蛇のスープなどが出てきました。 この家の奥さんの料理はとても上手ですが、ウナギや蛇は食べません。 これらの料理は作ることはできるけれども、食べるのは苦手とのことでした。 コオロギや小鳥はどんどん食べていました。 ラオス人の中にもいろいろな好みがあるようです。【Bon appétit !】 米国で子供のアレルギー増加中 About three million kids in the US are now affected by food allergies, an 18 percent increase over the past 10 years. ラオスの野菜炒飯
野菜炒飯↑（2008年10月22日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月22日。 この夏、メコン川は水位が危険水域を越え、各地で浸水の被害に見舞われました。 ヴィエンチャンの川沿いの家もずいぶん浸水したとのことです。 今日は、メコン川沿いにあるお気に入りの食堂へ行くことにします。 あちこちに土嚢が積んであり、水害の傷跡が残っています。 目的の掘っ立て小屋のような店に入ります。 対岸のタイの家の明かりがメコン川に映えてきれいです。 いつもの野菜炒飯を頼みます。 具にたっぷりの野菜が入り、皮をむいて斜めに薄切りにされたキューリと緑の部分を飾ったアサツキがチャーハンの回りにおかれます。 唐辛子が入っている魚醤をかけ、ライムをギュッとしぼって食べます。 口の中が辛さでヒーヒーしますが、新陳代謝で体が生まれ変わるようです。 辛い炒飯とは知らずに犬が私の脇でジーと座って上目使いで物欲しげにしています。【Bon appétit !】 ビール The world's oldest and most popular alcoholic beverage, beer is recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and may have been brewed as early as the 6th millennium BCE. ラオスのヨーグルト
サーオバーングループのヨーグルト↑（2008年10月23日、ヴィエンチャン） ラオスで見かける商品は、ほとんどが輸入品です。 農産物や織物等の手工業品、飲料水は国内産ですが、ほとんどのものはタイ製、中国製で、町中輸入品が溢れています。 国内で作られている物の筆頭は、ビールでしょう。 ビアラオというとても美味しいビールがあります。 牛乳もチーズもジュースもラオス製のものはなかなか見つかりません。 ヨーグルトもほとんどがタイ製ですが、ラオス製のヨーグルトがヴィエンチャンで売られています。 ヨーグルトの原料となる牛乳はラオスにはありませんのでタイから持ってきますが、ヴィエンチャンにある小さな工場でヨーグルトにします。【Bon appétit !】 ボトル入りの飲料水は安全か？ At nearly 2,000 times the price of tap water, bottled water is often extolled（激賞する）as the purer of the two, but a new study shows that some leading brands of the bottled beverage are just as contaminated as water from your kitchen sink. 凱旋門↑（2008年10月21日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月21日。 雨季が明けたので、青空がきれいです。 とはいっても、このとこ毎日午後3時ころに激しい雨が降ります。 昨日のように夜にもまた豪雨になることもあります。 凱旋門の辺りはちょっとした公園になっていて、空がとても広く見えます。 日差しが強いために、人は凱旋門の下のベンチで涼んでいたりします。【Bon appétit !】 新技術で家族の絆が深まる？ It seems that computers, the Internet, cell phones, and other modern technologies are much less damaging to family relations than many had previously feared. In fact, a recent survey of 2,252 Americans found just the opposite. ラオスのお見舞いの果物
花束とお見舞いの果物↑（2008年10月21日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年10月21日。 アパートに戻ると、部屋に果物が置いてありました。 「早く快復しますように」というメッセージが添えられていました。 大家さんからのお見舞いの果物でした。 国は違っても人を思う気持ちは日本人もラオス人も変わりないのだなぁと思いました。 写真の花は、ラオス人から3日前にいただいた花束です。 ラオスでも、卒業、歓迎等の時には、花束が活躍します。 卒業式の時など、ものすごい数の花束が道端で売られます。 ラオスのどこにこんなにたくさんの花があるのか不思議になるくらいです。【Bon appétit !】 UFO撃墜？ More than 50 years ago, former US pilot Milton Torres was ordered to shoot down a UFO over the English countryside and was later instructed by a shadowy figure to keep silent about the incident. But on Monday, Britain's National Archives released thousands of documents about reported UFO sightings, and Torres’s strange secret became a matter of public record. In May 1957, at the height of the Cold War, two US fighter planes were sent to shoot down an unidentified aircraft. ラオスの川に架かる簡易な橋
川に架かる簡易な橋↑（2008年2月2日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年2月2日。 世界遺産に指定されているルアンパバンにいます。 早朝、街の中を散歩することにします。 カーン川の岸を歩きます。 カーン川はルアンパバンの町をはさんでメコン川と反対側にあります。 こじんまりとしたかわいい感じがする川です。 今歩いている岸は高い所にあり、眼下に川があります。 川の中に人ひとりがやっと通れるような橋が見えました。 すぐ流されそうな簡易な橋です。 川に下る急な道を下って橋の所へ行ってみます。 近くで見ると、しっかりと木が組まれ、上から見たより立派に作られていました。 対岸に、畑がありますので、そこに行く時に使う橋のようです。 雨季に水かさが増すと、対岸の畑は水面下に沈むことがあるそうです。【Bon appétit !】 飲酒による脳の委縮は女性に顕著 According to a new study of the effects of alcohol, those who drink - even the moderate amounts linked to a decreased risk of heart disease - have smaller brain volume than non-drinkers. A two percent decline in brain volume per decade is considered a normal part of aging, however, greater amounts of shrinkage（縮小）in some parts of the brain have been linked to dementia（痴呆）. The link between alcohol consumption and decreased brain volume is stronger in women, with female abstainers（禁酒家）found to have a higher brain volume than former drinkers as well as light, moderate, and heavy drinkers. In men, only heavy drinkers had a smaller brain volume than those who consumed little or no alcohol.

ラオスの踊り
ラオスダンスのレッスン↑（2008年4月26日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年4月26日。 今日は、ラオスダンスの講習会に行くことにします。 ラオスでは、行事があるたびに踊ります。 手の甲を外側にそらせて踊る、東南アジア風のあの踊りです。 結婚式や誕生会、バーシーの時、とにかく人が集まって飲んだり食べたりの時は、ガンガン音楽をかけて踊ります。 たいてい二人一組になって踊ります。 ひとりで踊るモダンなダンスもあります。 踊れなくても、盆踊りの様に適当に踊りの輪に入っていればそれはそれでいいのです。 今回は、たまたま知人が講習会に誘ってくれましたので、良い機会ですので基本を学んでみることにしました。【Bon appétit !】 壁上りはヤモリに学べ Geckos have the gravity-defying ability to climb smooth walls and hang from the ceiling by a single toe, thanks to the intermolecular（分子間の）van der Waals forces（ファン・デル・ワールス力）that give the microscopic（極微細な）hairs on their toes incredible adhesive properties. ラオスの窓からの景色
アパートからの景色↑（2007年6月8日、ヴィエンチャン） 私が住んでいるアパートは、ヴィエンチャンの中心部のすぐ近くにあります。 上の写真はアパートからみた景色です。 上の写真に写っている雲の下には、隣国のタイがあります。 ここから、メコン川まで歩いて5分弱です。 2007年6月に撮った写真ですので、アパートの前の道路が完成前の工事中の状態です。 日本の援助で道路を舗装し直して高規格のものにしているところです。 右の方向に行くと３ｋｍ位で空港、左の方向へ行くと４００ｍ位で街の中心部に入ります。【Bon appétit !】 サメの単為生殖 In the second known case of shark parthenogenesis（単為生殖）, a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center became pregnant while in captivity away from males of her species. In May 2007, the 5-foot (1.5-meter) shark died and underwent a necropsy（検死）. It was then that aquarium officials discovered that she was carrying a nearly full-term（臨月の）pup（子）. DNA testing showed that the pup had no father. This second case of asexual（無性の）reproduction in sharks has convinced scientists that the first case was not merely a fluke（まぐれあたり、幸運）of nature, and they are now trying to determine how common this form of reproduction is in wild shark populations.

ラオスのバーシー
祈祷師が来て行われるバーシーの儀式↑（2008年4月19日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年4月19日。 今日は、ラオス人の家へ行って、バーシーに参加します。 その家のご主人の知人が日本へ行くと言う事で、送別の儀式を行います。 バーシーは、ラオスでは機会あるごとに行われる儀式の名前です。 出産、結婚、葬式、歓迎、送別、正月等の人生の節目節目に行われる儀式です。 祈祷師と村の長に来てもらいお祈りをします。 お坊さんが来ることもあります。 バーシーの儀式は土着信仰であり、仏教ではありませんが、どちらもラオス人が信仰していることには変わりありませんので、一体化しています。 祈祷の後、あるいは、時として読経の後、周りにいる人の手首に白い糸を結びつけながら各人の幸せを祈ります。 近所の人もぞろぞろとやって来ては三々五々帰っていきます。 食事がふるまわれることが一般的です。 今日は一般的なラオス料理のほかに、ヤギが一頭ふるまわれています。 その後、ラオスダンスを踊ります。 式次第はありません。 訪問者がいる限りはいつまでも続きます。【Bon appétit !】 太鼓 Though taiko simply means "drum" in Japanese, the word is often used outside of Japan to refer to the relatively recent phenomenon of ensemble taiko drumming, and to the drums it employs, which are among the world's largest. In fact, some of these drums are so large that they remain in a single location and are never moved. The story of the early beginnings of Taiko is one that is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that some of the earliest recorded uses of the Taiko drums were on the battlefields of ancient Japan during the Warring States Period.

皆さんはどのようにして英単語を覚えていますか？私の英単語を覚える方法は、周りの人に「私には知らない英単語はない！」と豪語することです。この方法、意外と効果的ですよ！ 言葉は言霊（ことだま）。それ自体に魂があります。英単語にも、幸せをもたらす英単語があります。そんな英単語を覚えて、幸せになりましょう。 １０月１０日の幸せをもたらす英単語は、「relish」を取り上げてみました。 例としては、He has an enormous relish for life.という使われ方があります。Hunger gives relish to plain food.という使われ方もあります。 動詞として、relish the idea ofのように使われることもありますね。 意味は、great enjoyment or pleasurepleasurable anticipation という意味になります。【復習】 １０月３日の幸せをもたらす英単語は、「luster」でした。 例えば、The presence of the prince added luster to the occasion.という使い方がありました。 意味は、the shine from the surface of a mineralthe shining quality of a surfacethe quality of being special in a way that is excitingで、光沢、輝き、栄光でしたね。 また、At the same time the fever returned to give luster to her eyes, color to her cheeks, and vermillion to her lips.という使い方もありましたね。 思い出しましたか？

ラオスの牛追い
放牧していた水牛を追って家に向かう農民↑（2008年5月8日、サイブリー郡、サワンナケート県） 今は、2008年5月8日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの南約５００ｋｍの所にあるサワンナケートに来ています。 夕方、向こうから水牛を追って家路に就く農家の人がやってきました。 ラオスの農村は、朝は、牛や、ヤギ等を放牧しに行く人の群れがあり、夕方は、動物たちを放牧地から戻す人の群れがあります。 この時は、道路が動物たちに占領され、車が何度も立ち往生します。 子供が牛を追っていることもよく見かけます。 とてものどかな情景です。【Bon appétit !】 精神に作用するカエル The subjects of rumor and urban legend since the 1970s, psychoactive toads are toads from which hallucinogenic（幻覚を引き起こす）, mind-altering（意識に影響を与える）substances such as 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin can be derived. ラオスの一軒家
ポツンと建っている一軒家↑（2008年5月13日、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年5月13日。 世界遺産の街、ルアンパバンに来ています。 今日は、ルアンパバンの北にあるパークオー郡に行きます。 村の中に大きな川が流れているため、目的地へは、村のボートで対岸に渡って行きます。 細い道を歩いていると、一軒の家がありました。 一軒家はたいていは、農作業のための出作り小屋であることが多いのですが、この家は、出作り小屋ではなく、普通の生活の場としての家です。 今まで、ラオスで一軒家を見ることがなかったため、新鮮な感じがしました。 なぜ、人里離れたところで一軒で生活しているのかはわかりませんでした。 この家の人が作っているトウモロコシがとても美味しく驚きました。 大きさは、小型の１０ｃｍほどのトウモロコシで、粒の色は白色。 もちもちの感触があり、驚くほど甘さがあります。 日本でもとりたての甘いトウモロコシに感激することがありますが、その何倍も感激するほどおいしいトウモロコシです。【Bon appétit !】 世界の株価急落 European stocks suffered some of their biggest declines in 20 years yesterday, as the US Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged（急落する）below 10,000 points for the first time since 2004. ラオスの川渡り
移動手段としての船↑（2008年5月13日、パークオー郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年5月13日。 今日はルアンパバンにいます。 ルアンパバンの町から北の方向へ向かい、パークオー郡にある村へ行きます。 村の道路わきで、村の人がボートを作っています。 ボートは、幅６０ｃｍ位、長さ１０ｍ位のものです。 村の中に川があるため、船が必要なようです。 道路わきから川岸まで急な下り坂になっています。 川幅は５０ｍ以上ありそうで、流れもあります。 川岸にちゃんとした渡し船があるわけではなく、村のボートが何艘か置かれています。 適当なボートに乗り込みます。 立ち上がるとひっくり返りそうな縦長のボートです。 付近にたむろしている人に操縦を頼んで向こう岸へ渡ります。 流れがあるので、岸に沿って上流に向かって進み、川を横切るときに一気に下流に押し戻されて向こう岸に着いたときは、出発地点のほぼ対岸へ到着です。 夕方、川岸にいる人に声をかけると、そこにいる誰かがボートで迎えに来てくれます。【Bon appétit !】 臓物 Considered either waste material or delicacy（珍味）, depending on the cultural context, offal（臓物）is the entrails（内臓、腸）and internal organs of a butchered animal. ラオスの寝仏
横たわる黄金色の寝仏↑（2008年5月13日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年5月13日。 今日は、ルアンパバンに来ています。 朝、ヴェトナム系の寺院ワットパバートタイに立ち寄ります。 メコン川沿いの崖の上にあり、寺院の裏から見るメコン川の景色が心を和ませます。 この寺には、寝仏があります。 寝仏は、日本でも福岡県の南蔵院の涅槃像などがありますが、ラオスではいろいろなところで目にします。 ヴィエンチャンのブッダパークにある寝仏は５０ｍもあるような巨大な寝仏で見る人を圧倒します。 ルアンパバンで一番美しいと言われるワットシェントーンにも寝仏があります。 この寺は、美しい屋根の建物、美しい壁画の建物などいくつかあり、見るたびに驚きを発見できるお寺です。 ヴァンヴィエンの鍾乳洞の中にあった寝仏は、洞窟の中に差し込む光が寝仏を照らしていて厳かで、かつ、幻想的です。【Bon appétit !】 米国のシリアルは砂糖過多？ Nutrition experts agree that people who eat breakfast generally weigh less, have better cognitive（知的・精神的作用の、認識の）performance throughout the day, and have better overall nutrition（栄養摂取）than those who do not, but a disturbing trend in the breakfast cereal industry may be undermining（むしばむ、ダメにする）the meal’s health benefits. A new analysis of cereals sold in the US found that many brands, especially those marketed to children, are actually more than 50% sugar by weight and contain as much sugar as a glazed doughnut. Many of these brands have also boosted the sugar and sodium（ナトリウム）content of formulations sold on US markets, while the same cereals in other countries contain less of these ingredients.

ラオスのゲストハウス
ゲストハウス↑（2008年3月28日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年5月12日。 朝、ヴィエンチャン空港9時20分発の飛行機に乗ってルアンパバンにやってきました。 早速、宿泊場所を探します。 ルアンパバンは、街そのものが世界遺産に登録されていることもあって、世界中からたくさんの観光客がやってきます。 そのため、ラオスの他の町に比べて宿泊施設の料金がとても高くなっています。 部屋数が多いホテルは敬遠して、こじんまりしているゲストハウスに泊まることにします。 何回か宿泊しているゲストハウスは、メコン川近くにある、ラオスらしい木造のゲストハウス。 とても清潔感があり、部屋も広く快適です。 今日は、今まで泊まったことのないゲストハウスに泊まることにします。 たくさんのゲストハウスが軒並みに並んでいます。 値段はいろいろで、高いからと言ってよい施設とは限りません。 一軒一軒歩いて自分の目で確かめます。 一泊６～７ドル出せば、かなり快適な部屋が見つかります。【Bon appétit !】 スティーブ・レイ・ボーガンは1954年10月3日生まれ Vaughan was one of America's most influential electric blues guitarists. His unique sound was created with the use of heavy strings, and his style drew frequent comparisons to that of Jimi Hendrix. ラオスの友好橋の国境
右がラオス、左がタイ↑（2008年6月14日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年6月14日。 今日は、タイのノンカイへ行くことにします。 ノンカイにあるジャーマンベーカリーのメニューにある「大きな朝食」を久しぶりに食べたくなったので、突然ですが行くことにしました。 併せて、タイからラオスに来る鉄道のタイ側の線路の最終工事場面を見に行くことにします。 ラオスから来る線路とタイ国鉄の線路がつながっている状態をまだ見ていなかったのです。 タイへ行くには、メコン川に架かる友好橋を渡ります。 今日も自転車で橋を渡りますが、いつものことながら、自転車で渡る人は他に誰もいません。 友好橋の真ん中が国境です。【Bon appétit !】 素数 By definition, prime numbers（素数）are positive integers（整数）that can be divided only by themselves and the number 1 without leaving a remainder（余り）. ラオスの友好橋と自転車
オートバイ、自転車OK、歩行者禁止の標識↑（2007年12月3日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2007年12月3日。 ヴィエンチャンからメコン川を渡ってタイへ行くには、友好橋を渡ります。 友好橋は歩行禁止です。 車で行くか公共の乗り物を使って行くことになります。 「自転車でも行けるよ。」という人もいますが、「自転車では行ってみたが通してくれなかった。」という人もいます。 というわけで、今日は、ぶっつけ本番で自転車に乗って友好橋へ行ってみることにしました。 ヴィエンチャンの町からメコン川を下流方向に向かいます。 ２０ｋｍほど行くと友好橋に到着です。 自転車に乗って国境を越えようと言う人は誰もいません。 先ずは出国手続きです。 車用の出国窓口に行くと、「あっちへ行くように」と言われました。 言われた窓口へ行くと、今度は「あっちの窓口へ行くように」と言われました。 「さっきの窓口でこっちに来るように言われた。」と言うと、なぜか手続きをしてくれました。 どの窓口でもいいのでしょう。 少々まごつきましたが、無事、出国することができました。 いよいよ橋の上を自転車で渡ります。 橋の手前にあるゲートには、オートバイ、自転車OK,歩行者禁止の標識が立っています。【Bon appétit !】 ポールニューマン Actor, director, race car driver, and philanthropist（慈善家）Paul Newman lost his battle with cancer on Friday, leaving a legacy that will live on in his absence.Newman appeared in over 50 films during his six decade acting career, including such classic films as Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
