アフガニスタンの作家
ジャララバードからカブールへ向かう途中の景色↑（1977年3月22日、アフガニスタン） 今は、2008年6月15日。 先日知人が貸してくれた本「The Kite Runner」を今日読み終わりました。 著者はKHALED HOSSEINIというアフガニスタン人。 物語はアフガニスタンを中心に繰り広げられます。 召使の子供と主人公の関係を中心にした心理描写がとても良くかけていて、自分のことのように感情が移入されてしまいました。 召使のこどもに対して犯した罪、そこから生じた後悔を背負い続ける人生、贖罪、出生の秘密等読み応えがありました。 小説の舞台になった、アフガニスタンのカブール、バーミヤン、ジャララバード、パキスタンのペシャワール等は、ソ連侵攻前に私がかって歩いた地域です。 小説もその頃の平和な時代から始まっていますので、ページをめくるたびに当時のことが思い出されます。 当時のアフガニスタンの風習、その後のソ連侵攻、文化の破壊、タリバン支配によるさらなる破壊といった歴史的な背景が主人公の贖罪の旅と相まって物語を面白くしています。 この物語は映画にもなったと聞いています。 皆さんの中にも見られた方がいることでしょう。The Kite Runner君のためなら千回でも（上）【Bon appétit !】 伝説上の野生の大男 The woodwose, or hairy wild man of the woods, was the Sasquatch（野生の大男）figure of medieval Europe. 市場で売られていたきのこ↑（2008年3月28日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年3月28日。 今朝はルアンパバンの朝市に来ています。 いろいろな種類のきのこが売られているので、楽しくなってしまいます。 ラオスの人は、きのこをよく食べます。 料理にはきのこがたくさん使われています。 木クラゲのようなきのこもよく見かけます。 シイタケ、マッシュルームの類は日常見かけます。 シメジのようなもの、細く小さく茎が固いきのこなどもあります。 ブッフェ形式のレストランに行くと、キノコが入っている料理を選んでいる自分に気付きます。【Bon appétit !】 子供の飲酒は親のせい？ A recent study by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration（薬物乱用精神保健局）found that 3.5 million underage drinkers each year abuse or are addicted to alcohol, a disturbing trend made worse by the many parents who illegally supply underage youths with the beverages. ラオスのたこ焼き？
何となくたこ焼きを思わせる食べ物↑（2008年3月28日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年3月28日。 ルアンパバンの朝市。 売られているものは、野菜や果物、肉、魚、蟹、鶏、乾物、砂糖その他いろいろ。 売り子さんとお客さんがじっくりと値段交渉などをしています。 ヘビやトカゲ等も売られていて観光客を驚かせます。 あれっ！向こうの方で、たこ焼きを焼いている人がいます。 近づいて見ると、確かに「たこ焼き機」のようなものでたこ焼きのようなものを焼いています。 タコは入っていません。 形は、二つの半球を合わせたような少々潰れた形の球形。 味は、お楽しみです。【Bon appétit !】ヘレンケラーは1880年6月27日生まれ Blind and deaf from the age of 2, Helen Keller was placed in the care of Anne Sullivan, who acted as her teacher and companion for 49 years. ラオスのターナーレーン駅のホーム
すっかり出来上がったラオス初めての駅のホームと駅舎↑（2008年6月14日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年6月14日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンのターナーレーン駅を見に来ています。 ラオス初めての鉄道がもうすぐ開通です。 この駅から、タイのバンコクへ直通列車が走ります。 駅ホームも駅舎もすっかり出来上がっていて、あとは列車の運行を待つばかりです。 【Bon appétit !】 攻撃的・暴力的運転手 Are speeding, tailgating（すぐ後ろを運転する）, and threatening other drivers merely behaviors motivated by anger, or are they symptoms of a psychological disorder? ラオスの海苔
ルアンパバーン名物のカイペーン↑（2008年3月26日、ナンバック郡、ルアンパバーン県） 今は、2008年3月26日。 今日は、ルアンパバーン県の北に位置するナンバック郡へ来ています。 昼食は、小さな食堂へ入りました。 野菜スープ、野菜炒め、こんがり揚げた骨付き豚肉、カイペーン、カオニャオを頼みます。 カイペーンって、何だと思いますか？ 実は海苔なのです。 ラオスにも海苔があります。 海がない国ですので、海苔と言っても川でとれる海苔です。 軽く揚げてあります。 また、ゴマ、スライスしたトマト等が一緒に海苔にくっついています。 バリバリ食べたり、辛子みそをつけて食べたりします。 揚げてあるので、たくさん食べようとすると、脂っこくなってしまいます。 佃煮にして食べてみたい気がしました。 【Bon appétit !】 ウェンアモンの旅行記 Known only from one incomplete copy discovered in 1890, the Story of Wenamun tells the tale of an Egyptian priest and his journey to Byblos in Phoenicia. ラオスのターナーレーン駅
ターナーレーン駅からタイへと向かう方角↑（2008年6月14日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年6月14日。 今日は、タイのバンコクから来る列車のラオス側の終着駅を見に来ました。 ラオス初めての鉄道はほぼ完成し、あとは若干の準備を残すのみとなりました。 タイ側の最後の駅ノンカイを出た列車は、メコン川にかかる国境の橋を渡ってラオスに入ります。 ラオス側に入って最初に停まる駅が終着駅。 駅の名前はターナーレーン駅。 駅名は村の名前からとったとのことです。【Bon appétit !】 ソロモンの柱 Characterized by their corkscrew（らせん状の）-like shaft（柱身）, Solomonic columns draw their name from the Biblical description of the two columns that famously flanked（の側面に位置する）the entrance to the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, built in the 10th c BCE. ベトナム戦争当時、ラオス革命軍が使っていた大砲↑川の向こう側はタイ（2008年4月3日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年4月3日。 今朝はサワンナケートの街を散策しています。 広場に米軍機の残骸が無造作に置かれています。 その近くに、大砲が置いてあります。 この大砲で、米軍機を撃ち落としたのでしょうか？ これは対空砲なのでしょうか？ こうして1975年の革命で米軍に勝利したことをいつまでも覚えておこうということなのでしょう。 大砲が、メコン川の対岸のタイの方向を向いているのが少々気になります。 それにしても、雨ざらしではなく「ちゃんと保存したらどうでしょうか」と言いたくなります。【Bon appétit !】 火星探査機、氷発見 When the Phoenix Mars Lander first dug up patches and chunks of white material on the Red Planet, scientists on Earth were unsure of what it had actually found. ラオスの米軍機の残骸
ラオス革命軍に撃ち落とされた米軍機の残骸↑（2008年4月3日、サワンナケート） 今は、2008年4月3日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍの所にあるサワンナケート県の県庁所在地にいます。 朝方、散歩していたら、広場の真ん中に飛行機の残骸が置いてある所に来ました。 ラオスではいたるところで、ベトナム戦争当時の、アメリカ軍との戦争の名残を見かけます。 爆撃に使われた砲弾の殻を使って作った塀や建物はよく見かけます。 また、一般市民がアメリカ軍の爆撃でたくさん亡くなった所なども保存されています。 サワンナケートの飛行機の残骸は、特段保存されている様子ではありません。 雨ざらしになっておいてあります。【Bon appétit !】Melanoma Treatment Success with Cloned Cells Scientists have announced the successful treatment of melanoma（黒色細胞腫）using a patient's own cloned immune cells. ラオスの鉄道工事
国境の橋のラオス側↑線路が橋を離れて外に向かう（2008年6月14日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年6月14日。 ヴィエンチャンとメコン川をはさんで対岸のタイのノンカイを結ぶ橋の上にいます。 道路の真ん中に線路が敷かれています。 橋の上の道路の幅はそれほど広くありませんので、列車が来るときには道路を封鎖しないと、車と列車との接触事故につながるような気がします。 タイ側からラオスに向かって行って川を渡って暫くすると、線路は、橋の上の道路から、道路を斜めに横切って、橋の外に出ます。 橋の外の線路は既に完成していて、ラオス側の駅につながっています。 線路が橋から外に出るところに見張り所ができています。 線路が道路を横切るので、列車が来るときには道路を封鎖するのでしょう。 列車本数は一日3本位が予定されているようです。 すぐにでも一番列車が走るように言われていますが、いつになるのかは、まだわかりません。 楽しみです。【Bon appétit !】 DNAで家系がわかる？ A DNA database is providing male adoptees（養子）with an unusual method for determining the likely last name of their biological fathers. ラオスの水牛と子供
水牛と面倒を見ている子供（左上）↑（2008年5月15日、ポンサイ郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年5月15日。 ルアンパバン県に来ています。 舗装されていないでこぼこの道に入ってから2時間ほど走ると、ルアンパバンの北東の方向にあるポンサイ郡に到着です。 目的の村へ行こうとしたのですが、途中の川の水量が多く渡ることができず、結局歩いて行ける村へ行ってみることにしました。 小川を渡渉して、山道を歩いていると、道の下の方で、子供が水牛を追っています。 まだ小学校の低学年くらいの感じの女の子です。 ラオスは、子供が家計を助けている場面に良く出会います。 ラオスの子供はよく働きます。【Bon appétit !】 ホンダの水素自動車 With the cost of gas reaching record prices, people everywhere are looking for alternative power sources to fuel their cars. ラオスの鉄道
ラオスに行く線路とつながったタイ側の線路↑右側の線路はノンカイ旧駅につながっていた線路跡（2008年6月14日、ノンカイ、タイ） 今は、2008年6月14日。 今日は、タイのノンカイへちょっと足を伸ばして、ラオス初めての鉄道のタイ側の状況を見に行くことにしました。 タイ側はもうすべての工事が終わっていると聞いています。 バンコクからの列車は、4月にはラオスに来る予定でしたが、まだ、開通しません。 どうも、職員の訓練、列車運行方式の確定、タイとラオスの取り決め等まだすべきことがあるようです。 タイへ行くにはメコン川の上にかかっている橋を渡ります。 私の愛車（自転車です！）で、橋を渡ります。 橋の手前で、道が交差し、右側通行から左側通行に変わります。 橋の上はすでに道の真中に線路が敷かれていますが、ラオス側はまだ何か工事のようなことをやっています。 道床をはがして、中の配線を見ているようです。 電気系統の工事でしょうか？ タイ側の線路はすべて完成しています。 バンコクから来た線路は、ノンカイ駅からさらに先に進み、ラオスにつながっています。 ノンカイ駅から先には、ノンカイ旧駅に行く線路があって、実際に列車が走っていましたが、驚いたことに、ノンカイ旧駅へ行く線路は既に廃線となっていました。 旧ノンカイ駅は一度廃止されたものが復活していますので、もしかしたら再び復活することがあるかもしれませんね。【Bon appétit !】 携帯電話中毒 It seems today that everyone everywhere has a cell phone. ラオスのウナギ料理

ラオスのカエル料理
ひき肉と香辛料をお腹に詰めたカエルのから揚げ↑（2008年6月13日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年6月13日。 今日は、ラオス人のお宅にお呼ばれしてきました。 ヴィエンチャンの街から６ｋｍくらい離れた農村地帯です。 今、中国資本が大規模に開発をしようとしている地域です。 周りは、たくさんの池沼がある湿地帯になっています。 将来は、鉄道駅もこの辺りに出来ることになっています。 お呼ばれした家で御馳走になった料理の一つはカエルの料理です。 今まで何回かこのブログでもカエルを紹介してきましたが、今日の料理は、今までのものとは異なります。 今まで食べてきたカエルはどれも、カエルをそのまま焼いたもの、煮たものまたはスープに入れたものでした。 今日のものは、カエルの中に、豚のひき肉が詰まっています。 カエルを丸ごとから揚げする前に、豚のひき肉と香辛料を混ぜ合わせたものをカエルのお腹に積めます。 単なる焼いたカエルと違って、いかにも料理と言う感じがします。【Bon appétit !】 ２形性 The term sexual dimorphism（2形性）describes the physical differences between males and females of the same species that arise as a consequence of sexual maturation（成熟、成長）. ラオスのこどもたち２
田んぼ沿いの道を歩いている子供↑（2008年3月27日、ナン郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月27日。 今日は、ルアンパバン県の南西の方向にあるナン郡へ来ています。 木が伐採され、裸になった山が目に付きます。 伐採あと地に中国資本がゴムの木を植える話になっているそうです。 相当広範囲に伐採されている山が至る所にありますので、保水力の低下、表土の流出、気温の上昇等が起きて砂漠化するのは時間の問題かと感じます。 田んぼを見ていたら、先ほどから子供たちが歩いてきます。 大人はあまり見かけませんが、子供ばかり歩いています。 2020年までには最貧国から脱出しようとしているラオスの将来を背負うことになる子供たちです。 今は諸外国にどっぷりと依存しているラオスですが、この子たちは自力で国を作り上げることになるのでしょう。 将来が楽しみです。【Bon appétit !】 伊でユニコーン発見される？ Tales of unicorns, mythical horse-like creatures endowed with magical healing powers and bearing a characteristic single horn on the center of their foreheads, have enchanted children for centuries. ラオスのロケット祭り２
ロケット祭りの日だけに振舞われる黄色いお酒↑（2008年5月24日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年5月24日。 今日は、ロケット祭りを見にヴィエンチャン近郊の村に来ています。 ロケットを見る前に、黄色い酒を飲んで気分を盛り上げます。 ロケット祭りの会場に行くと、出店が出ているので冷やかします。 ３０ｃｍくらいの長さの打ち上げロケットを売っている出店があります。 いろいろな食べ物が売られています。 中には、タガメ、カメムシ、こがね虫などをから揚げにした食べ物も売られています。 おもちゃも売られています。 会場には、仮装集団がいて、顔を真っ黒に塗っています。 女装をした一団がいます。 泥水の中で泥だらけになって遊んでいる大人たちもいます。 オレンジ色の袈裟を着たお坊さんもたくさんいます。 本物のロケットが打ち上げられる合間に、小さなロケットがかってに打ち上げられています。 飛んで来たらとても危険ですが、誰も咎めることなくあちこちからいろいろな方向に向けて打ち上がります。 ロケットを打ち上げる風習は日本でも秩父の龍勢祭はじめ各地にあります。 ラオスの場合は、雨季に入って一月くらいたったころに行われることから、雨乞いのための風習と考えられているようです。 今年は、例年以上に雨が早くからたくさん降っていますので、雨乞いの儀式はいらないのでしょうが、各地で毎週のようにロケット祭りが行われています。【Bon appétit !】 MTR More than half of the electricity generated in the United States is produced by coal-fired power plants. ラオスのロケット祭り
発射台から発射するロケット↑（2008年5月24日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年5月24日。 今日は、知人に誘われてロケットを見に行くことにしました。 この時期、ラオスでは各地でロケット祭りが行われます。 始まるまで時間があるようなので、知人の知人宅で飲食をします。 鮮やかな黄色いお酒が出てきました。 ロケット祭りの時だけに作る特別なお酒とのことです。 もち米とうるち米から作ったお酒で、かなり甘みがあります。 どうしてこんな鮮やかな黄色い色が出るのか聞いたのですが、とにかく黄色くなるのだそうです。 訪問した村のロケットは、直径２０ｃｍ位長さ２ｍ位の円筒で中に火薬が詰められたものを、４ｍ位の長さの竹竿にくくりつけて作ります。 これを、発射台にくくりつけ、電気着火して、空に向かって飛び出たせます。 ロケットは一直線に空に向かい、龍に見紛うばかりの煙を後方に排しながら、相当高くまであがります。 おそらく５～６ｋｍ以上の高さになるのではないかと思われます。 落下するまでの時間を計って競っています。 何分も落下してきません。 落下地点は打ち上げた場所から何キロも離れることもあります。 落下地点で死傷者が出ないことを祈るばかりです。【Bon appétit !】 夢遊病 An estimated 18 percent of the world's population is prone to sleepwalking. 初めて入ったレストランのとんかつ定食↑（2008年5月10日、ヴィエンチャン） ラオスには日本食レストランが何軒かあります。 どうしても外国料理が口に合わない日本人の方も、ヴィエンチャンに6軒の日本食レストランがありますので、食事に困ることはありません。 また、日本食レストランでなくても、寿司やサーモンの刺身などがわさびとともに出てくる店も何軒かあります。 私がラオスで過ごしている1年2か月の間に、自分から日本食レストランに行ったことは3回になります。 もっとも、何かの会合の席が日本食レストランになっていることがあるので、日本食レストランに行った回数は、10回位にはなります。 6軒のうち全く行ったことのない店がまだ2件あったのですが、5月10日の日にそのうちの一つに行きましたので、まだ入ったことのない日本食レストランは、あと一軒となりました。【Bon appétit !】 クラスター爆弾 Cluster bombs have been used in military campaigns around the world with devastating results.
