ラオスの夜行バス
夜中に小休止中の夜行バス↑（2008年4月16日、ターケーク、カムアン県） 今は、2008年4月16日午前1時40分。 昨夜の20時半にチャンパーサック県パクセーを出た夜行バスに乗りました。 普段見慣れているバスはドアも閉まらないおんぼろバスですが、夜行バスは、豪華なバスが走っています。 寝台バスがあるのには驚きました。 寝台列車のようにベットに寝ることができます。 日本にもないような気がしますがどうでしょうか？ 4月12日に乗った夜行バスは、狭く足も思いっきり伸ばせなかったのに比べ、今回のバスはリクライニングシートがゆったり配置されていて快適です。 バスは、カムアン県のターケークに停車中です。 20台近い豪華夜行バスが一堂に会している姿は圧巻です。【Bon appétit !】 10代4人に一人は孤独？ According to data collected in surveys for the Children's Society, more than 25% of 14 to 16 year olds agree with the statement: "I often feel depressed." パクセーで見かけた乗り物↑（2008年4月13日、パクセー、チャンパサック県） 今は、2008年4月13日。 ラオスの最南端の県チャンパサック県の県庁所在地パクセーに来ています。 パクセー最大のマーケットタラートダーオファンの前にある道を歩いていたら、見慣れない乗り物がやってきました。 オートバイの脇に乗客が座る場所を取り付けています。 ヴィエンチャンでは見かけたことがありません。 パクセーでは、トゥクトゥクよりもこの乗り物の方が目に付きます。【Bon appétit !】 食料不足 The World Health Organization views hunger as the number one threat to public health; it is responsible for a third of child deaths and 10% of all disease. ラオスのソーンテーウ
乗合トラックのようなソーンテーウ↑（2008年4月16日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年4月16日。 ラオスの乗り物と言えばトゥクトゥク。 そのトゥクトゥクと並んでよく見かけるものにソーンテーウがあります。 今、ヴィエンチャン郊外の南バスターミナルにいます。 これからヴィエンチャンの街中まで行くのですが、どうやって行こうか思案中です。 丁度、ソーンテーウが停まっていて、乗客を探しています。 街中まで乗せてもらうよう話をします。 値段を聞くとトゥクトゥクよりずーっと安い値段です。 値段に関して交渉の余地はないように感じました。 言い値でOKの人だけが乗っても良いという感じです。 現地のラオス人にも同じ値段を言っています。 ソーンテーウは、トラックの荷台に椅子をくくりつけたような感じです。 両脇が長いすになっていて、真中に乗客の荷物をどんどん乗せていきます。 乗り合いバスのようです。 たくさんの人が乗った所で出発です。 ソーンテーウの後ろにぶら下がっている女性がいます。 中に入った方がいいと思うのですが…。 タクシーと同じように、乗客の求めに応じて行き先を決めますので、街中に向かって走っていたと思ったら思いっきり外れた方向にも行きます。 乗客も慣れたもので、どこへ向かおうと、気にしない様子です。 10人以上お客が乗っていますので、途中何か所にも寄っていきます。【Bon appétit !】 連邦準備制度 The US Federal Reserve was created in response to the Bank Panic of 1907, a financial crisis in the US during which the stock market crashed and the economy entered a recession. “The Fed” is a central banking system and note-issuing authority that regulates the country's credit and monetary policy. トゥクトゥクの前を行くトゥクトゥク↑（2008年4月12日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2008年4月12日。 ラオスの乗り物と言えばトゥクトゥク。 三輪車に乗客が座る場所を取りつけています。 6人乗ればきつきつです。 が、10人以上乗っているトゥクトゥクを見かけることもあります。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの中心地から６，７ｋｍ離れた所にある南バスターミナルへ行くことにします。 道を歩いていると、トゥクトゥクの運転手が「どこまで行くの？」と聞いてきます。 「南バスターミナルまで行きたい。」と言うと、ここから値段交渉です。 向こうの言い値は少し高めでしたので、私が相場の値段を言うと、少し下げてきました。 余り価格を下げないので、このトゥクトゥクを見送り他のトゥクトゥクにするつもりでいたのですが、思い直し、これも何かの縁と思い、乗ることにします。 トゥクトゥクは貸し切りではありません。 途中で他のお客を乗せて目的地に向かいます。 【Bon appétit !】 男女の産み分け？ Over the last four decades, there has been a slow but consistent decline in the proportion of boys being born in industrialized countries. サウナの蒸気を沸かすタンク↑2008年4月15日（パクセー、チャンパサック県） 今は、2008年4月15日。 ラオスの南部にあるパクセー（チャンパーサック県）に来ています。 ラオス人の家に泊まらせてもらっています。 この家はスチームサウナを経営しています。 木を燃やして火を起こし、ボイラーの中の水を沸騰させます。 その蒸気は、ボイラーから出ている管を通ってサウナの部屋へと導かれます。 近所の人でしょうか、たくさんの人がサウナに入りに来ます。 【Bon appétit !】 シェクスピアは1564年4月23日生まれ。 Though his true date of birth remains unknown, the birthday of famed playwright and poet William Shakespeare is traditionally observed on April 23, the same day on which he died 52 years later. ラオス最南端付近の建物↑（2008年4月14日、デット島、チャンパサック県） 今は、2008年4月14日。 今日は、ラオス最南端、カンボジア国境近くまで来ています。 ボートでコーン島へ向かう途中、いろいろな建物が見えます。 高床式の建物が見えてきました。 高床式の家は、ラオスの至る所でお目にかかります。 床下で食事をしたり、昼寝をしたり、機織りをしたり、動物を飼ったり、いろいろな事に使用されています。【Bon appétit !】 空港のスキャン In the wake of（のあとに続いて、の結果として）the September 11, 2001, airplane hijackings and terror attacks, airport security in the US has come under intense scrutiny. ラオス最南端付近の建物↑（2008年4月14日、デット島、チャンパサック県） 今は、2008年4月14日。 今日は、ラオス最南端、カンボジア国境近くまで来ています。 国道13号線を離れてメコン川の船着き場へ。 そこからボートで、メコン川の中の4,000以上ある島の一つ、コーン島へ向かいます。 途中、デット等のわきを通ります。 ボートから見ていると様々な建物を見ることができます。 フランス統治時代の積み出し埠頭が見えてきました。 あの日本の民家のような建物は、ゲストハウスでしょうか？【Bon appétit !】 ビタミン剤が健康に悪影響？ Scientists reviewing 67 studies involving 230,000 participants concluded that antioxidant（抗酸化剤）vitamins do not extend life and are actually linked to a higher rate of mortality, meaning that they could lead to premature death. Vitamin proponents（擁護者）believe that these supplements help protect the body by eliminating free radicals, highly reactive molecules capable of causing damage in the brain and body tissues, but the researchers found that beta carotene and vitamins A and E are all linked to an increased risk of dying. Vitamin C appeared to have no effect on mortality whatsoever.

「何のために生きてきたのだろうか？」

ラオスのイルカウォッチング
メコン川の岩山でイルカを見つめる人たち↑（2008年4月14日） 今は、2008年4月14日。 メコン川を下って来て、これ以上進むとカンボジア領内に入ってしまうという所、川の真ん中に周囲20ｍ位の岩の小島があります。 そこは、イルカウォッチングをするには格好の場所です。 今は、16時17分。 次から次とイルカが水面に背中を出します。 そのたびに、周りの人が、声をあげます。 時々、見つめている方角と全く異なる方向でイルカが水面に姿を見せます。 誰かが気づき、「今度はあっちだ！」と声を出してくれます。 つがいのイルカは、片方が黒っぽく、もう片方が白っぽい色をしています。 どっちがオスなのかわかりませんが、見ていると白っぽいイルカの方が女性のような感じを受けました。【Bon appétit !】 ゼロの発見 Despite being the last digit to come into use in the numerical system, the zero plays a central role in mathematics. メコン川のつがいの川イルカ↑（２００８年４月１４日） 今は、２００８年４月１４日。 カンボジア国境近くのメコン川の中にある小さな岩山に上陸しました。 岩山は周囲２０ｍ位の小さな島です。 水面を見ていると、次から次へとイルカが背中を見せます。 あっ、潮を吹きました。 つがいのイルカもいます。 目が慣れて来ると、どの辺にいるのかよく分かるようになりました。 水面下にイルカがいると、何となく水上が盛り上がっているように見えます。 岩山の上では、日本のテレビ番組の制作チームがじっとイルカを追っています。【Bon appétit !】 フランスでやせ過ぎ助長の禁止 In a country that is home to the one of the most influential fashion capitals of the world, lawmakers have taken a stand（抵抗、反対する）against the ultrathin ideal that many in the clothing industry espouse（採用する、支持する）. ラオスのイルカ
メコン川の川イルカ↑（２００８年４月１４日） 今は、２００８年４月１４日。 ラオスにもイルカがいると言うと驚かれるでしょうか？ 揚子江イルカは有名ですが、実は、ここ、メコン川にもイルカが生息しています。 というわけで、今日は、メコン川にイルカを見に行くことにしました。 コーン島から船に乗り、目指すはカンボジア国境へ。 というか、すぐ対岸は、カンボジアです。 イルカの生息を予感させるような素晴らしい景色の中を、国境近くへ進みます。 ボートを降り、川の中にある小さな岩山に上陸です。 岩山は周囲２０ｍ位の小さな島です。 ここで、じっと水面を見ます。 次から次へとイルカが背中を見せます。 時々背中を現わして潮を吹きます。 つがいのイルカもいます。 残念ながら、空中高く舞い上がるイルカはいません。 この辺りに生息するイルカはピンクドルフィンと呼ばれていて、体がピンクがかっていると言われていますが、そこまではわかりませんでした。【Bon appétit !】 アルツハイマーと血中尿酸 A review of data collected from 800 people with early stage Parkinson's disease over a 2 year period has shown that the disease’s progression is associated with the levels of urate（尿酸塩）in the blood. ラオスの鉄道橋跡
フランスが架けた鉄道橋↑（2008年4月14日、コーン島、チャンパサック県） 今日は、2008年4月14日。 今日は、ラオス最南端、カンボジア国境近くにいます。 コーン島と隣のデット島の間にフランス植民地政府が架けた鉄道橋を見に行きました。 ２００８年４月１６日のブログに載せた蒸気機関車が、第２次大戦まで、この橋の上を走っていたと言うことです。 また、走らせてみたいものです。【Bon appétit !】 血族関係を表す用語 Kinship terms like mother and son are words used by a specific culture to describe various familial relationships. ラオスの蒸気機関車
日本軍進駐まで使われていた蒸気機関車↑（2008年4月14日、コーン島、チャンパサック県） 今日は、2008年4月14日。 ラオスの最南端カンボジア国境へ来ました。 国境のメコン川には、4,000の島があると言われるほど無数の島が点在しています。 上流側と下流側には相当の高度差があり、その間を縫うように滝が形成されています。 この落差があるために、船による物資の運搬ができません。 第2次大戦前のフランス植民地政府は、この間の物資の運搬を鉄道で行うこととし、ここに鉄道を敷設しました。 これが、ラオスに初めて引かれた鉄道です。 総延長6.5ｋｍ。 この鉄道は、第2次大戦中の日本軍の進駐で廃棄され、それ以降ラオスには鉄道が敷設されていません。（ラオスで初めての本格的鉄道が、今月中には完成して、タイのバンコクと結ばれる予定になっていますが、予定通りにはいかないようです。） メコン川に浮かぶ島の一つコーン島には当時の鉄道の路盤の跡と、当時使われていた蒸気機関車が雨ざらしにされて残っているというので会いに行ってきました。 60年以上たっている割には良く残っていると思いますが、部品もだいぶなくなっていて、かわいそうな状態でした。【Bon appétit !】 チャップリンは、1889年４月１６日生まれ Chaplin was one of the most creative personalities in the silent film era: he acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually scored（曲を書く）his own films. バナナの葉の上で腸詰めを売る人と見る人↑（2008年3月28日） 今は、2008年3月28日。 今日はルアンパバンにいます。 朝市に出かけました。 ソーセージを売っている人がいます。 バナナの葉の上に、腸詰めを乗せて売っています。 バナナの葉に包まれたソーセージも売っています。 バナナの葉に包まれているものは、ソーセージではなくて魚のすり身を蒸したもののこともあります。 酸味が強く発酵したようなソーセージもあります。 香辛料たっぷりのソーセージを炒めたものの中にはかなり美味しいものがあります。 そんなソーセージに出会うと、幸せ度がアップです。【Bon appétit !】 足がある蛇 Some of the more primitive modern snakes, like boas and pythons（ニシキヘビ）, have tiny "spurs" near their ends, grippers that may be evidence of the reptiles’ legged past. 魚を切る魚売りと札束を握りしめたお客↑（2008年3月28日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2008年3月28日。 今日は、ルアンパバンにいます。 少し早起きして、朝市を冷やかしに行くことにします。 魚売りが何軒かあります。 たいていは、地面にシートを敷いてその上に魚を並べています。 小鮒のような小さな魚や雷魚の様な大きな魚があります。 どれも今朝獲ってきたのでしょう。 一軒の魚売りは、腰の高さの台の上に魚を乗せて売っています。 エイや大きなナマズなどもあります。 魚売りは、お客の求めに応じて、まな板の上で魚をたたき切ってくれます。 お客は、手に札束を握りしめていました。【Bon appétit !】 結婚後増える女性の家事の時間 In 1976, women performed an average of 26 hours of housework a week, while men averaged a mere 6. 穂が出て、刈取りまでもう少し↑（2008年3月26日、ナンバック郡、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月26日。 今日は、ルアンパバンの北１５０ｋｍ位の処にあるナンバック郡へ来ています。 今年のルアンパバン県のコメは成長が遅れています。 理由はいくつかあることは既に述べたとおりです。 穂が出ている稲はまだあまりありませんでしたが、道路脇の一枚の田の稲は、穂が出てもうすぐ刈取り適期になりそうです。 穂の根元を見ると何やら赤くなっています。 よく見ると卵で、タニシの卵ということでした。【Bon appétit !】 過度の飲酒は成長中の脳を損なう Previous studies have shown that binge（飲み過ぎ）drinking can impair（損なう）a person’s memories of past events, and now a new study is showing that teens who binge drink continue to be forgetful and absent-minded days after consuming large quantities of alcohol. ラオスの国道13号線
乾季の雨でできた水たまりと国道13号線↑（2008年4月3日、ボリカムサイ県） 今は、2008年4月3日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍにあるサワァナケットを出発して、ヴィエンチャンへ向かいます。 国道13号線を車に乗って、途中で休憩したり昼食をとって、8時間位かかります。 国道13号線は、ラオスを南北に貫くラオスの動脈、幹線道路です。 舗装されています。 途中、牛や水牛、ヤギの群れのために立ち往生することもしばしばあります。 子ブタが横切る時もあり、なんともユーモラスです。 このところ乾季の天気が安定しません。 今日も、所々ですごい雨に見舞われます。【Bon appétit !】 毎日一杯の珈琲で医者いらず？ Researchers studying the effects of caffeine on the blood-brain barrier-a membrane（細胞膜）that prevents chemicals in the bloodstream from entering brain tissue-have found that the bitter alkaloid can protect the brain from the damaging effects of cholesterol. ラオスの村での食事
おかずはカエルの串焼きとトウガラシの入った味噌↑（2008年4月2日、チャムポン郡、サバナケット県） 今は、2008年4月2日。 今日は、ヴィエンチャンの南５００ｋｍにあるサバナケット県に来ています。 乾季に作付けされている田んぼがどの辺にあるかどうか村長さんに聞いてみました。 すぐ近くにあるということで、村長さんの案内で行くことになりました。 車で行ったのですが、すぐに車では入れない道となってしまいました。 そこから徒歩で半時間ほど歩くことに。 突然青々した田んぼが現れます。 さらに、乾季であるのにもかかわらず雨が降ってきました。 ちょうど農家の人がいたので、その人の小屋へ連れて行ったもらいます。 そこで30分ほど雨宿りです。 その間、近くにある木の枝を取ってきて、その葉っぱを食べることにします。 ちょっと酸っぱくてフルーツの味がするような葉っぱでした。 小一時間もしないうちに雨がやんだので、来た道を引き返します。 途中から太陽がぎらぎら照り始め暑くなります。 車のあるところの少し先に、食堂があり、皆はそこでペプシやミランダを飲み始めます。 村長はお昼を食べてないのか、食事を注文です。 食事と言っても一種類しかありません。 今日の料理は、おこわ、カエルの串焼き、唐辛子の入った味噌でした。【Bon appétit !】 百万ドルの賞金を受け取ったのは誰？ Alexander Varshavsky, a researcher who plans to develop new cancer drugs based on the DNA missing from tumor cells, has been named the first recipient of the $1 million Gotham Prize for Cancer Research. ラオスの出作り住居
村から遠い田にある住居↑（2008年3月26日、ナンバック、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月26日。 乾季作米を見るために、田んぼのあるところまで行くことにします。 乾季の田は、天水に頼ることができません。 水が必要です。 必ずしも道路の近くの田に水が来ているわけではありません。 というわけで、車から降りて、山道を歩くことにします。 何十分か歩いていると、突然目の前に青々とした田んぼが広がります。 驚きです。 何時間も歩いてやっとたどり着く圃場もあります。 圃場には、ちょっとした小屋があります。 農家の人は時によってはその小屋で寝泊まりすることもあります。 毎日村に戻っていては、行き帰りだけで一日が終わってしまいますので、このような小屋が必要になります。 雨風を避けたり、暑さを避けたり、寝泊まりしたりするのにもこのような小屋は欠かせません。 この種の小屋は、日本でも各地にあります。 福島の檜枝岐では出作り小屋と呼んでいます。【Bon appétit !】 カラオケ Karaoke, a form of entertainment in which amateur performers sing songs using pre-recorded music, was popularized by Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue in the 1970s. 自分がいいと思うもの

ラオスの乾季の米作
山道を歩いて行くと突然眼前に田が広がる↑（2008年3月26日、ナンバック、ルアンパバン県） 今は、2008年3月26日。 今日は、ルアンパバンの北１５０ｋｍ位の処にある、ナンバック郡へ行きます。 ここのミカンは美味しいことで有名ですが、今日では時期が遅すぎもうありません。 車が入れるところまで車を使い、あとは山道を歩きます。 山の木々がほとんど切り取られ、裸山になっています。 中国資本が木を切り倒し、そのあとにゴムの木を植えます。 それまでの豊かな多様性のある自然の替わりに、破壊された自然が残されています。 このままではラオスは近いうちに砂漠化することでしょう。 と、突然、目の前が広がり、青々とした田んぼが広がります。 今は乾季ですので、水のある田んぼは緑色、その他の景色は乾燥した枯れた色です。 稲は少々小さいようです。 今年の稲は遅れています。 遅れている理由は場所により異なりますが、おおむね次の4つのいずれかの理由が当てはまります。 1月後半から2月にかけての低温による成長の遅れ。 乾季の前に作っていた雨季作米の収穫が遅れたことによる乾季作米の田植えの遅れによる刈取りの遅れ。 乾季作の初めに換金性の高いにんにくを植え、にんにくの収穫後に田植えを行ったことによる刈取りの遅れ。 灌漑用水が来るのが遅れたり途中で水が止まったことによる生長の遅れ。【Bon appétit !】 インフルエンザ Influenza, commonly known as “flu,” is a highly contagious（伝染性の）viral（ウイルスによって起こる）disease that is characterized by fever, respiratory（呼吸の）symptoms, fatigue, and muscle pain. ラオスの稲の花
花を咲かせた稲穂↑（2008年4月2日、サバナケット県） 今は、2008年4月2日。 今日は、サバナケット県に来ています。 ヴィエンチャンから南に５００ｋｍ位下がった処にある県です。 今は、乾季ですので、田はほとんどが涸れ上がっています。 所々、灌漑施設があり用水が届いている田があります。 周りの枯れた色と異なり、青々とした稲が育っています。 例年ですと、あと10日位すると稲の収穫が始まります。 今年の稲は、まだ穂が出ていないところがたくさんあります。 １、２月の低温の影響の所もありますが、灌漑施設を修理していたために水が来るのが遅れ、田植えが一月ほど遅れた所が意外とあるようです。 サバナケットの田植えは、ヴィエンチャンより早く11月末頃に行われる所が多いようです。 今年は、それが12月になったり1月になったりしています。 お陰で、農家の人は今年のラオス正月の頃は、稲の刈取りがない分、例年よりゆっくりできそうです。 でも、5月末には雨季作の田植えが始まりますので、乾季作の刈取りはそれまでに終了させておかないと、今度は雨季作が遅れてしまいます。稲花 あわちどり 純米吟醸原酒 1.8L【Bon appétit !】 お腹の大きな人は痴呆になりやすい？ While past studies have found evidence suggesting that obesity in middle age raises the risk of developing dementia（痴呆）later in life, new research now suggests that this risk is not solely linked to weight.
