DVD「風神の門」
◇Jun. 30th I was suffering from a heavy and dull pain from the morningand so I cancelled a morning English lesson.Instead, I finished a translation work ordered by a British guywho lives in 筑紫野市. I am going to introduce him to the deshiin Hakata as her new customer.He will sometimes give us translation and interpretation orderssometime soon in the future. Finished the translation around the noon.Then, I had a long rest, watching the DVD of 風神の門. It's an exciting story of famous ninjas between the Warring States Period(戦国時代).and the beginning of Edo Era. Have any one of you watched this drama?If you have, please tell me.I think any of you might have watched this dramaabout 26 years ago. Fictitious ninjas such as 猿飛佐助、霧隠才蔵、獅子王院 fight against each other in this story.霧隠才蔵 is a main character in this drama.He once worked for Tokugawa side, but turned himselfinto a ninja for 豊臣 after meeting with 真田幸村. 霧隠 is one of 伊賀忍者s, who are famous forworking individually, on the other hand, a group of 甲賀忍者swork as a group under one big boss with loyal spirit for him.伊賀地方 is just one mountain away from 甲賀地方,but the characteristics of them are very different from each other.It's very interesting. I will write more about this drama in the future again. Anyway I am very happy to be able to watch this drama again.Besides, this drama gives me many instructions how a man should live!! 真田幸村 said in this drama, when he met with 霧隠才蔵,「男として生まれ、１人生き、死んだという証しを残したい」 to him.才蔵 was impressed by his words and so was I. As a pro-interpreter with difference faces,I would like to put a firm mark or leave my name in the history of Japan and world. ◇ Jun. 29thOn June 29th, I had a seminar at Fukuoka SOHO SupportCenter. This day I was supposed to teach how to translateJapanese-written family register into English and adviseparticipants how to make or start their own businessas a pro-translator. It was supposed to be 2-hour-long seminar,but I had to make the seminar just one hour. I wanted to cancel this seminar in the morning,because I was suffering from a severe pain in my right foot.The pain came from gout (even now I still have a terrible pain!!) Anyway, in this seminar, I had two participants:One of them is a deshi of mine who lives in Fukuoka City.I didn't do the translation seminar and so I focused onhow to start a translation business. I suggested them several ways to obtain a good opportunityto work as an interpreter at local organizations.You need just small amount of costs for starting the business.If any of you have are interested in these suggestions,I'm going to advise these ideas to you later personally. Besides, I introduced some of my corporate customersto the deshi who were present at the seminar.From now on, I have to focus on supporting her by giving heras many opportunities for working as 通訳者 as possible.I admit that I have been late in supporting her, working herein Iizuka City. Bearing a hard pain, I managed to finish the seminarand went back to my apartment in Iizuka by bus.I cancelled an evening lesson on this day due to pain.------------------------------------------------------By the way, when I arrived at my apartment, I found a noticeput in the door. The notice said that a home delivery service manhad a parcel sent to me.The parcel was from NHK.I had placed an order for two boxes of four volumes of DVD.It is ninja & samurai drama titled 「風神の門」. The original storyof this is written by 司馬遼太郎.The drama was broadcast when I was a junior high school student.I am very happy now that I am able to watch the drama againafter 26 years.-----------------------------------------------------【Ken's Office】

A New Student
◎Tue. Jun. 27thThis day I had a good English lesson in the night.It was with a new student of mine.I taught her how to pronounce some words, especially[ i: ], [th] and [r], introducing her several words whichcontain the above sounds. For instance, three, rain, redbath, cloth etc.I got amazed to see she didn't hesitate to open her mouthbefore me and tried to say the words.This attitude is very important for us to learn Englishpronunciation. I know many women, especially young ladieshesitate. But she didn't this day.So I think she will be able to learn good pronunciationsoon or later. Some of my female students includingdeshis should behave like this lady.She reminded me of one of my old students.She never hesitated to open and move her mouthbefore me while we were practicing English pronunciation.She was (K*****)-san.I used to teach her about 8 years ago, as many of youhave been told.Anyway, I am very pleased to have this kind of student.I have determined to give her very good and practicalEnglish training from now on.Ken Suetsugu

英語練習の心得
さる6月25日は、旧暦(Luner Calendar)では、５月１９日ですから、宮本武蔵の命日ですね。臨終の際に、「天を仰げば実相円満、兵法、逝去にして絶えず」と遺言を残しております（これは史実です）。尚、小倉の手向山の山頂に、武蔵の養子で小笠原藩の家老・宮本伊織が建立した孝行碑がありまして、上記の文字が刻まれ、漢文で武蔵の足跡を称えていますいずれ私が英語版の看板を作成し、設置する予定で来年の前半までには成し得たいです上記の遺言の大意は、「自分の兵法は乾坤（宇宙真理）に一致し、完成を見た。 剣で争う時代は、もう終わったが 兵法（剣）の心は恒久に続くであろう」という意味合いです剣の心とは、柔道の心でもあり、英語の心でもあり人それぞれの道の心です。私は、英語の心を以って、武蔵の跡に続きたいと思っております。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー英語の心とは何でしょうか？それは１つには、自ら工夫し、練習する、表現域を広げる力です：現在、対面式受講者の皆様に あるテストを課しております：それは、以下のものです：This is my ----. という表現パタンを使って、何でも良いので、セリフを思いつくまま言って下さい、というものと同様に What's---? の場合でも言って貰う、というものです。皆様はどのくらい言えますか？This is my 所有物.This is my 所有物 I wanted for a long time.This is my policy(抽象的な概念）This is my final decision.This is my usual way to--This is my old --This is my former--This is my favorite--This is my first trial.trip to---stage in my career. などなどと実に沢山の事がいえます。自在に、ポンポンポンと表現が出ますか？英語の練習や勉強は、自分で行うべきものと私はいつも考えます。これは、通翻訳についても同様です。振り返りますと、私自身が独学ですので、自ずとそう考えますが英語の達人などの話を聞きますと、やはり私の場合と同様ですが、とにかく、自分なりに英語を練習する、勉強する方法を見出して、それを積極的に行った人ばかりです。人それぞれに、その人なりの方法を持っている様ようです。私の場合は、１）掛け算九九の英語読み２） 自動車プレートの瞬間読み３）目に見える光景の英語実況４）硬貨を使っての表現練習５）タイムショックなどのクイズ番組での練習６）ジャズボーカルを歌う ７）金閣寺での通訳、インタビューと色々としておりました。８）英作文（日本語⇒英語訳）９）好きな映画を何度も見る皆さんは、各々固有の方法を持っておられますか？もし、まだ持っていない方は上記をヒントに考えてみて下さい。私見ですが、人の真似をするのでなくて、それとヒントに自分なりの勉強方法を見出す事が必要です。自分で工夫して練習できない方は私も授業などをお断りするしかありません。よく思うのですが、身の回りのものを上手く利用すると良い英語の勉強になります英語を習う場合については、例えば、一週間練習してきたものを以って先生と勝負する、という気構えで臨む授業だと英語の力も伸びるでしょう。先生に何でもまかせっきりという授業や姿勢ではよくありません。自分で工夫をして進む事が必要です。この点、ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。【末次通訳事務所】

◎Mon. Jun. 26thThis day I had a trial English lesson with a ladywho lives near my apartment.She finished English Course at 嘉穂東高校 andworks as a secretary at KIT, a local technical university.At first, I didn't know what she was like and so I just thoughtshe would a beginner in the way of English.But when she started to speak English, I found thatshe is an excellent English speaker.So, I changed my initial plan and gave her an Englishtraining for interpreters.I have now two students who finished English Courseat 東. If she decides to take my course, she'll bethe third who finished the English course.I envy them, because when I was a 東 student,we didn't have such course.-------------------------------------------This day a tragedy happened to me.I got my right foot damaged due to some reasons.I went to a local hospital and got medicines.I took some pills as prescribed after meals.However, these pills have a strong side-effectand they made me very sleepy.So, I couldn't have a good concentration on workin the afternoon.-----------------------------------------By the way, many people around me often ask me for adviceor help about their love affairs. I am happy to have such kindof consultation. When I am asked for some advice, I alwaystry my best to give them the best advice which surely will help them a lot.They also ask me about my own love affairs.Some of them ask me if I have a lady I love or not.I don't have any specific lady I fall in love with now.Because I've almost given up any chance of marriage.But I have a lady I would like to focus on.She is the one I had a good chat with over tea this FebruaryI would like to grow my love with her, if possiblein the course of development of the relationshipwith the lady.----------------------------------------------【Ken's Office】

英語と将棋と
◎ Sunday, Jan. 25thThis day might be an epoch-making day to me.From this day on, I started Shogi Course.The first student came here to my apartment totake my course. He' a fourth grader at 伊ぎ須 Elementary School.This day, I taught two important things:「礼儀」 and「 筋違い角戦法」I stressed the importance of 礼儀(courtesy and manners)"If you follow the courtesy and manners, you will be able towin the opponent, just because you are better than youropponent in mental attitude. Mental attitude is a keyfactor to be a strong shogi player", I said to him.I told him to say "よろしくお願いします"、"有難うございました"earlier than your opponent to get ahead of his opponent.As for strategic instructions, I introduced 筋違い角戦法to him. This strategy is very easy to memorize even for beginnersand is well-organized. This 戦法 is full of tricks, making ouropponent lose the game.I told him that if he used this 戦法, he would be able tobeat his father. I hope he will actually beat his father withmy favorite 戦法 of this.This day, I was supposed to have a 護身術セミナー at 3:00 p.m., but I had to cancel it with no applicants.This day I bought a portrait of someone at theprice of 30,000 yen. ◎6月24日 土曜日This day, in the morning, I had two English lessons:Actually, I was supposed to have three, butthe last student didn't show up. Didn't know why.I felt a little sad about it, but this day I was very muchexcited.In the first lesson, the student and I practicedsaying information in English, using a grade schooltextbook of Social Study. I found many good Japanesesentences to be translated into English.Please look at some drills below:In the second lesson, I taught her how to developEnglish conversation, explaining the importance ofcommunication.After the lesson, I checked my e-mails and did sometranslation work.In the afternoon, I walked for about 4 kilosas one of my daily practice.I wore an undershirt, sweater and jacketto get lots of sweat.-------------------------------------------The evening on this day, I invited my deshi and her sistersand another student of mine to have a dinner at a local串カツ restaurant in 新飯塚.Requested strongly by one of them, I talked to them aboutmy love experiences: the famous affairs with 草野さん,the encounter with アスカ、and so on.I thanked her for making the atmosphere good and friendlyat the party. The dinner was closed around 9:00 p.m.--------------------------------------------

○Friday Jun. 23rd This day I had four English lessons:Two in the morning and another two in the afternoon.The last lesson on this day was for one of my deshis.She had asked me to give her some advice on her reportand so I talked a lot about Free Trade Agreementon this day. This topic seemingly had little to do withEnglish skill, but this lecture would be helpful in the future,I am sure.I had this lesson for about 90 min.Then, after that I was supposed to have another Englishlesson with a local high school student at 19:30.But she canceled my lesson due to her private reason.I was also busy in translating much English information intoJapanese.By the way, a strange thing happened this day.I received a letter of complaint from an aged gentleman who is one of my acquaintances. This guy runs his own English school in Fukuoka,even though he's a poor English speaker.He totally misunderstood about one of my services that I provided him last week and gave me some complaint about it.I have been upset by his letter, because it is totally his misunderstanding. I think he should call me if he has somethingto tell me, not a letter. [逆手を取る]の言い方と【護身術セミナー】告知

格闘技【サンボ】の普及・発展の阻害要因１
何か、サンボ連盟では問題が生じているらしい。スポーツの全国的連盟や協会がしっかりしていないとそのスポーツの普及・発展が望めない。どんな問題か？は、詳細はわからないが、関係者一同の協力で、速やかに解決して欲しい。サンボは、国際的にも、色々と問題があって国際的な普及が遅れている感じがある。たいがい、そうした場合は、一部の関係者が私心を捨てきれずに運営をする場合が見られるが、関係者は、サンボの普及・発展を大目標に私心を捨て、良い展開を望みたい【Ken's Office】

LOVE #2
先日対面授業で、日本語を交え、LOVEとは？との講義をしました。さてLOVE とは、元々古英語でlufian ラテン語のlubere から由来します。These words mean "pleasure"（喜び）.つまり、love とは、「嬉しい」との気持ちが根底にあります。家族、友達、好きな人と話す、時間を過ごすのは、嬉しい事ですね。つまり、love とは、関係者が互いに嬉しい、と思うものです。 I'd like to--/ I'd love to-- と２つの表現がありますが、I'd love to--は、是非喜んで～します、との意味合いになります。互いに嬉しくなるloveでなければなりません。これは、英語communication の根本になります。love/happy/pleasedなどは、英語の表現の根本です。私の授業では、一見英語に関係ないことでも実は大いに関係があります。根底からの英語授業をしております。

◎Jun. 20th6月20日は、私にとりまして記念日です。1992年6月20日、私は、勤め先であった昭和貿易株式会社を退社しました。通訳の道を歩む為に大英断をしました。退社したものの、如何に道を歩むか、答えを得ませんでしたので大いに迷い苦しみました。それから14年経過し、現在の様に、個人事務所ですが、通翻訳業務にて生活をしている事は退社当時想定できませんでした。このときの退社については、上司や先輩方から退社の件は、これを留意する様に執拗に求められました。この退社は両親に隠していましたので、退社の件が明るみになりますと、父親から手ひどく叱責・批判を受け、大変に惨めな思いでした。というのは、退社の前年、つまり1991年、当時、東京の事務所におりました私を訪ねて両親が、用事のついでに、様子を見にきてましたが、その際、東京事務所をあげて、両親をもてなしてくれましたので両親は、昭和貿易株式会社に対して大変良い印象を持っておりましたので、なおさら退社についてはひどく批判をされました。退社の当時の事を思いますと、未だに父親から責められる苦しい気持ちを思い出します。退社しまして約10日後、Japan Times 紙に求人の広告があり、記者募集とありました。早速応募し、最終面接試験まで残りましたが、前の勤め先である昭和貿易を2年半くらいで退社しましたので、定着性に問題があるとの事で結局不採用になりました。このことにショックを受けまして、幾つか企業に入退社を繰り返し、翌年秋から天彦産業（てんひこさんぎょう：鉄鋼商社）に入社し、2年在籍しました。昭和貿易も天彦産業も、創業が明治一桁で、いずれも130年以上の歴史のある会社でしたので、営業のあり方について深く勉強する事が出来ました。2年後に、天彦産業を退社し、その翌年の丁度今ごろ、当時滞在しておりました名古屋から飯塚市に戻りました。それは、10年前の丁度今ごろになります。梅雨時でした。それから今日前の10年間については別途報告するとしまして飯塚に不本意ながら帰省した時には、まさか再び英語で生活をしているとは思えませんでした。失望感にまみれて、正直な所、自決するつもりで、帰ってきておりましたので。8年前の6月20日に私は、末次通訳事務所を立ち上げました。勿論、法人でなく個人事務所ですが、自分が思う商売を興してよかったと思います。自分で商売をする以前は、父親との確執で嫌な気持ち、惨めな気持ちで暗い生活でしたが。帰省した時に、本当に自決していたら、と思うとぞっとします。詳細は、またお話するとしまして、末次通訳事務所では、添付ファイルの通り、複数の事業部門を設けて、今後展開して参ります。ビートタケシの様に、色々な側面を持つ人間になりたいです。相乗効果を目指して、そうなりたいと思います。英語関係の事業はともかく、将棋や格闘技を取り入れての事業展開をします。知恵を使って、事業展開を進めていきたいと思っております。正直な所、英語で立ち直った今、再度、上京して東京で仕事を展開したいと強く思います。ツカサのSOHOオフィスやウイークリーマンションを利用したら現状でも、引越しできると思いまして、現在調べております。ご質問などがありましたら、何なりとどうぞ末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

自動車の運転と料理と英語
I bet English conversation or communication is just like driving a car on a busy road. You need to give something more to your listeners to let them know a lot more about you for better relationship. Expressing yourself or things in English is just like making dishes out of foods available now. In this process, you need 「知恵」to express things with plain words. BTW, this day, June 20th is a very important day for me.

最近忙しくて、講師として高校に行ったり自分が企画したセミナーに加えて、通翻訳をしております。この一週間で3キロ体重が落ちてしまいました。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーさて、6月17日（土曜日）に福岡県立鞍手竜徳高校に赴き、就職・進学面接試験の指導、並びに、昨日18日に＜ドン＆ケンのやり直し英会話セミナー＞を行いました。昨日のセミナーでは、私は英語会話術という事をセミナーテーマで取上げました。英語会話術を含めて、コミュニケーションについて日頃の考えを元にして、講義をしました。しばらく、この講義を行います。高校での面接で講義した内容とちょっと重複しますので、人と話す事での大切なポイントをうまく絡めて講義をします。高校での面接指導では色々な点からアドバイスを生徒にしてきました。次の様なやりとりがありました私）高校時代の三年間で一番印象に残っている事は？生徒）修学旅行でスキーに行った事です。皆様は、この生徒の応答を見てどう思いますか？この応答はよくありません。修学旅行などの行事が印象的な事は多くの生徒が思っているはずです。つまり当たり前の事です。更に言えば、個性のない答えです。この様に応える方は採用されません「スキーに行きました」 そしてその後、自分なりのコメントを出すことが重要です。例）初めてでしたが、うまく滑れて楽しかった、 とか こけてばかりで、面白くなかったが、 初めて体験できたので嬉しかった とか ゲレンデのスロープは見た目よりも急勾配で びっくりした、とかその他、色々と、自分なりのコメントを 出さないとなりません。そのコメントに個性が出るのです。 時間に限りがある面接では、最初から自分なりを個性を出せる情報を 相手に伝える事が肝要です！ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーこれは、英語の会話でもそうです。先ず、昨日のセミナーでも申しましたが、会話に於いて、餌を撒けない方は、注意しても改善されない場合は、必ず破門します。特に若い人が多いのでご留意ください。私） What subject do you like best?相手） I like Japanese.この＜相手の応答＞はよくありません。コミュニケーションとは、自動車の運転と同じです。相手にサインを出して、円滑に自動車を進める様にしますウインカーを出す事と同じです。右左折の場合には、30メートル手前でウインカーを出しますがこれは、周囲の自動車へのサインですね上の英語の場合I like Japanese. のあと1) That's why I major in Japanese at my college.2) I've liked it since my junior high school days.3) The next is math.4) Especially I like reading old novels.5) How about you? 等など といえます。このセリフは全て、えさを撒いて相手に食いつかせる様にする工夫です。会話とは相手と意思疎通を図るものです。そのためには、色々なお話を、ある戦略で行うべきものです。つづくーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー★英語会話で必要な基本１）相手の目を見る２）握手をしっかり力強くする３）大きな声を出す４）羞恥心を捨て、恥を恐れない事この４点が出来ない皆様、特に若い方はやはり何度注意しても改善されない場合は、仮に弟子の方でも破門をせざるを得ません。ですからよくよく留意ください。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

高校での面接練習
日記をお送りします：On June 17th, Saturday, I, together with other eight presidentsof local businesses, visited 鞍手竜徳高校 to join their program.We were supposed to instruct the third-year studentshow to have a good job / entrance exam. interview test.The total number of students who were present was about 100.The total number of the third-year students were 150.Then, the teachers selected 100 students who were higher-motivated for this program, out of them.The students were all trained by their teachers at school for this whole weekabout how to have a good interview test.Then, this day was their final day in the program.They were divided into two groups: job interview group andentrance exam. interview test. They were further dividedinto two: individual interview group and group interview group.A total of 20 or 25 students were assigned to each of us,nine interviewers including me.We had four rounds of interview tests:集団就職面接、個人就職面接、集団進学面接、個人進学面接.As for me, first I had two students in 集団就職面接 training.Originally six students had been enlisted for this 集団就職面接 trainingBut other four were absent.In 個人就職面接 training、 I had five students.In 集団進学面接、I had six students.And in 個人進学面接, I had six students.What kinds of questions did we have to ask them??The questions had been prepared by their schooland so we were able to ask such questions, but most of us ask them different ones from the prepared questions.I gave them many advices or tips while I was doing a jobinterview.Now let me allow to write this diary in Japanese now:----------------------------------------------どの面接でも、最初に、自己紹介からさせました。自分の長所、短所、特技、趣味を入れながらの自己紹介ですそのとき気が付いた事ですが、１）「参りました」の言葉遣い「福岡県立鞍手竜徳高校からきました田中と言います」これは、下記の通りに、言うべきですね「福岡県立鞍手竜徳高校から参りました田中と申します」２）「長所と短所」皆、長所はスラスラいえますが、中には短所を「判りません」と応える生徒がいました。短所もきちんと言えるくらい、自己を把握しておく事が大切です。そして、もう一つ：短所を述べた後に、「その短所をカバーする取組みを挙げる」事です例えば「私の短所は、「緊張し易い」事です」⇒従来の面接方法提案：「緊張し易いことです。ですが、この短所を克服すべく 人前で話す練習を毎日1回しております」 などと短所を克服する取組みを自分で言う事が大切です。（★これは英語会話でも同じ事が言えます）３）自分の持ち物を全て使う（全ての得意を絡めて言う）ある同一の生徒で、次の様なやりとりがありました：＜特技を訊いた時＞「私はパソコンが得意です」⇒是だけのコメントでしたが実際は、それに加えて、具体的な事を足して言うべきです。その具体的な事が、大切です。★面接では時間に限りがありますので、 面接時の質問に単に応えるだけでなく、 質問・応答に関連がある事を、自己PRとして 最初から言うべきです。 訊かれてなくても、具体的に情報を織り込んで言う事が 必要な姿勢です。というのは、面接というのは、 ＜自分は～～という人間です＞と言う事を強くＰＲする場だからです＜会社に入っての目標を聞いた時＞「簿記を習っているので、経理で頑張りたい」という応えでした。実は、この一連の応答は勿体無いです。特技がパソコンで、職場に入っての希望業務が経理ですから「簿記を習っているので、経理で頑張りたい」といった後に「特に、私はパソコンも上手く扱えますので パソコンを駆使して経理をこなせる様になりたい」という風に質問話題を自分の特技と絡めて、言う事が大切です。得意技を全て使うという姿勢です。これは、英会話をはじめ、人生そのものについても言える事です。★次に、「高校3年間を振り返って、印象に残る事は？」という質問をしました殆どの生徒は、「修学旅行のスキーです」と応えましたがこれも良くない応答です。「修学旅行のスキーです」とは誰でも言えることです。★★そこでプラスアルファとなる自分の意見を加える事が求められます例えば「初めてのスキーが転んでばかりいたが、 段々上手く滑れる様になり、楽しかった」とか「ゲレンデは、見た目よりも急勾配で怖いものでした 見た目と実際に行うのとでは異なる事が体験できた」などと 色々と内容はアレンジして、自分なりのプラスアルファの コメントを言う事が出来ます。単に、だれもが言える意見でなく、プラスアルファの自分の意見を言う事が大切です。★面接の最後では、最近気になる社会現象や事件、出来事を 尋ねました。ある生徒は、「特に判りません」と応えました。その生徒は、軽音楽部に入っており、自分でもバンドをしています。よく訊いてみると、路上でも歌っている様ですですから、社会現象ですが取り様によっては、路上シンガーも一種の社会現象になります。ですから、この生徒の場合は、自分の得意技を絡めて、この事を言うべきです、と指導しました。面接とは、自分をPRする場です。限りのある時間で、遠慮なく、自分をPRする事が必要であり、それには、自分の得意技を、質問に絡めて応答する事が大切です。他の面接指導員も同様の事を指導していた様です。上のことは、英会話にも当てはまる事です。ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

男はつらいよ
This day I found myself taking a wrong strategy about a certain privatematter. At last I managed to reach the right conclusion about this. I'vealso found that I might need not a short but a long time to correct thewrong strategy or get rid of the wrong idea. ◎ LIVE WITH ～ と 「辛抱する」
中学校英語教科書で、開隆堂という会社が出しているSUN SHINE という教科書がありますが、この教科書に掲載されている英語の物語は使える表現の宝庫です。 その中で、 ”Will you live with us forever?” というセリフがあります。これは、ある男性が女性にプロポーズをしているセリフです。 このlive with は、他にも使い勝手があります。 例えば、Many young wives don't want to live with their mothers-in-law.「お姑さんとの同居を嫌がる若奥さんは多い」 ですね live with ～ は、～と生活を共にする、という意味合いですから、 現状のモノに我慢する、甘んじる、という意味合いが発生します。 例１）例えば、痛風に罹った相手に、＜I have to live with gout.＞＝痛風は一生の病気です。となります 例２）We have to live with the situation until it turns good. 状況が良くなるまで現状で耐えるしなかい、 例３） I know you don't like sales work, but now that you work at the sales department, you have to live with it. 営業職は苦手って知っているけど、今はその職にあるんだから 我慢しなさい、 という意味合いですね 他にも色々な応用例があります。ご参照ください。皆様ご自身で例文を考えれば良いですね

LOVE
◎Wed. Jun. 14th, 2006This day I had three lessons: two in the morningand one in the evening, while I was busy with translationwork.The one in the evening is an English lesson withone of my deshis. I always look forward to it.In this lesson, I taught her how to say things by use of "train", "listen to" and others.After teaching her these expressions, I told herto make sample sentences.She picked out this expression:「聞き上手は話し上手」"If you are a good listener, you are a good speaker(/communicator)."I explained to her why a good listener is supposed to be a goodspeaker. This talk led to a wide range of discussionabout love, and to my actual experiences and ideas about "love."Speaking of "LOVE," I do want all of my femalestudents to have a good love in their life.After this lesson, I found that I spent almost half ofour 2-hour lesson in talking about love.This talk must be a good lesson for her in the long run.But I should've focuses on practical English expression training.-----------------------------------------------------This talk reminded me of several great ladies I ever met.They include Asuka, Mihoko, Tomomi, Tomoko, Chie etc.They were and still are excellent ladies!Wow! You can blame me as a playboy.I used to be before, even though I always got disappointed in loveafter all.As for me, I have a few ladies who are in the 30s or 20sI would like to have a date with or dine out with.I am looking for a good opportunity to do it.Ken Suetsugu

◎ 【listen to ～】と言う事を聴く

◎ Tue. Jun. 13thThis day I spent many hours of the day in sorting out lots of documents. It was much tougher work than I expected.From now on I have to put things neatly in order at my apartment where I work for making a freshstart in my business.After finishing the work, I had three English lessons:with Mr. & Mrs. Artists, a local grade school teacherand a young lady respectively.Mr. & Mrs. Artists are going to hold a show in Iizuka soon.This artist has a unique skill.He carves and paints a portrait on a metal plate.Usually when we draw a picture of a person on a paper,we draw him or her on the front side of the paperBut he does it on the backside of the metal plate.So he does a reverse portrait on the backside of the plate.He carves the reverse of a portrait on the backside ofthe plate. People say that no one can match himin this unique skill.He actually has made 15 portraits including mine and oneof my deshis.My portrait and hers will be displayed at a galleryin Aida, Iizuka.In my 7:30 p.m. lesson, I taught English pronunciationto a young lady. This was a trial lesson.She was the lady who joined my seminar three times so far.She is so keen in learning English and she was this day.So I am very happy to have taught her English, even thoughit was a trial lesson. Jun. 12thEvery Monday I have at least four English lessons:two in the morning and another two in the afternoon.Last weekend, I had an inquiry from Kyushu Mitsumifor technical document translation.They have two kinds of technical documents to translateinto English.I thought that I would share one of them witha deshi in Iizuka for his on-the-job training andhis living.So, I taught how to translate the technical documentwhen I had an English lesson with him this day.In the last lesson I had at 5:00 p.m., I askeda student about football game.Being not familiar with football game,I didn't know the details about Off-Sideand Penalty Kick and so I asked him about them.He is very much familiar with the sportand kindly explained to me about them.This day I received another inquiry from a companylocated in Fukuoka City.I came to know this company in the business show heldon June 1st. They asked me to translate some lettersinto Japanese and English.I was very glad to have this new customer.After the four lessons, I jogged for an hour.This year I want to restart my career as an athlete,I mean, wrestler. Actually I was planning to take part inThe National Sambo Championship to be held on June 18th.However, due to my own business, I cannot join the championship this year. So, I am now aiming to joinSambo Trial Match to be held in fall and Sambo Freshmen's Cupto be held next spring. I would like to lose at least 15kg nowto get myself back to better physical condition.----------------------------------------------------KEN

◎Sun. Jun. 11th, 2006 Woke up at 5:00 a.m.Every Sunday I usually wake up before 5:00 a.m.so that I can watch a rakugo show at NHK. Had an English lesson with a local elementary schoolteacher at 9:00 for one hour. After this lesson, I was very busy in preparing forthe 二刀流 seminar to be held in the afternoon this day. I went to サンアビリティ・イイヅカ around 1:45 p.m.to hold the 5th 二刀流 Seminar.This time, I picked out a famous story titled,"Sound of Music." In this 二刀流 lesson, I use a junior high school text bookpublished by 開隆堂. This publisher's English textbook issuperb, I am sure. This textbook contains lots of usefuland practical English expressions to be applied in manyother ways. This day I picked up over 15 expression patterns to show to the participants.I also made them use these expression patternsto make their own sample sentences. Bidding and Submission holds
The other day I bought a digital camera through the Internetauction. This camera was priced at as cheap as 1 yen in the beginning.I got surprised when I saw this price.Then, I set the price at 3,000 yen as my first bidding price.Then, some other persons set their own price at a little bit higher than minefor the camera one after another.I also set a higher price for the camera right after them. This bidding had a three-day term.On the third day, I finally set the highest price at 11,000 yen.While enjoying the pricing competition, I checked to see if the supplier is a reliable one or not I found that the supplier was not an individual but a company which sells their products,imported ones, through the Internet auction.It was a corporate entity. So I had no worry about thequality of this product or services related to this product.At last, at the time limit on the third day, I was able tobid this camera.This camera had the brand of Groovy made in China.It has over 6 million pixels.I am not sure if this camera is good or not,but anyway I have a digital camera now with me.I would like to take as many photos of people, thingsand many other things as possible and put these photoson my blog.BTW, I will have a course or seminar on how to defend yourselfwith submission holds(関節技)or joint lock techniques.Why is 関節技 submission hold in English?submission means 屈服.If I control you with 関節技, you have to say 参った(tap)to me right away otherwise your arm or led is broken.So, in other words, you have to submit me.That's why 関節技 is translated into submission holds.English, shogi and 関節技 have many things in common.1) You need logical thinking in learning them.2) You have to be creative in learning them.3) You have to have different perspectives to be able to learn them.On June 25th, Sunday, I will hold the said seminarfor free of charge.Ladies and children are especially welcome.I will teach them how to survive in a dangerous situation.Speaking of 関節技、I do sambo.Sambo is one of the most advanced martial arts in 関節技.ken

Many Kens

Cancellation
Hi, Guys!!!This day, June 9th, I was supposed to go to Ten'jinto have a seminar called "How to Think Logically throughShogi" at SOHO Support Center.However, I had to cancel this seminar due to some reasons.So I stayed at home all day long, working on to a translation task.Originally I had planned to meet with a lady in Ten'jin duringthe lunch time, who I enjoyed chatting over coffee before, say, this February, but I also had to cancel this appointment.I have wanted to meet and talk with her.I haven't seen her since then.Probably I will go to Fukuoka City next week and the weekafter next and have an opportunity to meet her.Why? -- She's so charming and attractive among ladies I have seen so far.I am happy that I know many attractive ladies,even though I am too shy and easy to feel disappointedin love all the time.-----------------------------------------------This day I finally finished translating a medical paper.It took me three months to finish it.It was a long struggle for me. When I finished it,I felt much relieved and also felt a big burden disappearingfrom my shoulders.At the same time, now that I finished the translation,I will have to change the strategy or direction of my business.From this day on, I will shift the main part of my businessfrom document translation into oral translation.I will need about 6 months at max. for this shift.During the period, I will also focus on teaching English.I am going to teach English as one of my interpreting training.As for the document translation, I will give or transfermuch of the work to my disciples so that I will be able tofocus on the interpretation work.---------------------------------------------------This day I had three lessons: one in the morningand two in the evening.In the last lesson this day, I had a lesson withone of my deshis. 9 requirements
I know a great number of Japanese people are interested in improving theirEnglish command. At least, the following things are needed for that purpose:1) Strong Voice, 2) Rhythm, 3) Logical thinking, 4) Excellent Japanese command, 5) To be able to understand English in its word order, 6) Ability to talk about yourself freely and cleverly, 7) Persistence, fortitude & good guts, 8) Ability to use one expression pattern in many other ways and 9) Courage to speak English in public: (If my students are lack of any of them and don't try to improve themselves for a long time, I will get them out of my course.) 日本語と英語との間で＃１
日本語と英語は、奇しくも、全く異なる言葉です。ですので、日本語を英語に、英語を日本語にそれぞれ訳する場合は、或いは、日本語で言いたい事を英語で言う場合、逆に、英語で言いたい事を日本語言う場合は、原本の言葉（元の日本語、英語の）通りに、言う必要はありません。＃１ 具体的に言えば、英語が受動態だからといって、日本語も受身で言う事はありません逆もそうです。英語が能動態といって日本語も能動態で言う事はありません英語の受身を、日本語では能動態で言う：What step will be taken? を「どんな策が講じられるでしょうか？」と訳するのは、英語の文字をを日本語文字に置き換えただけに過ぎません。replacementにすぎません。「どんな手をうってくるやろか？」としなければ文字でなく、文字に込められた内容を反映した訳にはなっていません。これは、翻訳であり通訳であります。英語の能動態を日本語では受身で言う：People say I was wrong.学校では「人々は、私が間違っていたと言っています」と訳しますがトンでもありません。［勿論、先生方によっては、もっとうまく訳を教える先生もいますでしょう]「俺が間違ってた、って言われるよ」 ですねpeople とか 不特定多数を指す、theyが主語になる場合は、日本語では受身で訳すと良いですね。あくまでも上記は一例です。＃２ ついでに英語の代名詞についても英語の代名詞を、日本語でも代名詞として、彼は、という具合に訳をするのは良くありません。he/she などは、英語でのモノの言い方であって、あまり、日本語では「彼は、」という風には言いません。英語からの直訳に影響されて、確かに代名詞の訳語が日本語としても定着しています。ですが、私は違和感を覚えます。恋人という意味合いでの彼や彼女は別です。ですが、代名詞の意味合いでの彼・彼女は、極めて客観的に、小説の展開などで、「彼は孤独であった」などと表現する場合は除くとしても英語の代名詞の様に、しょっちゅう、彼は/彼女は とかそれらは/彼女らは という訳語を日本語として使うのは如何なものかと思っております。田中さんたちは、 とか、先生方はおねえちゃんたちは、という風に、具体的な名称で訳する方が良いです。そうした具体的な名称を英語で言う場合は、勿論代名詞で良いですけどねつづく【Ken's Office】

私の母親
私は、たばこ屋の倅である。つまり、私の実家はたばこ屋である。実際には、菓子パン、お菓子、ジュース類、日用品類も販売しているが。元々、うちの店は、末次さんご夫妻がされていた。最初は、うどん店であった。オートレース場などの客を対象にしていた様である。この末次さんご夫妻は、商機を見るに敏で、かつては、中国の大連で、豆店をしており、更に、喫茶店までしていたという。戦前の話である。そのご夫妻に、子供がなかったので、近所の秋元さんから、幼女に入ったのが、私の母である。更に、数年後、幸袋の入江家からそこに養子に入ったのが私の父である父は、野球にかけては天才的であった。つまり、私の両親は、秋元家と入江家し由来し、その間に出来た最初の息子が私である。ですから、私は自分自身を新生・末次の第一代目と思っている。【Ken's Office】

The Best Female Friend of Mine
I have some part-timers who help me a lot.One of them is nobu-chan. She's also one of my students.Our friendship goes back to 1998 when I talked to her on the streetaround Hakata Station. It is "nampa". I handed my business card to herand some weeks later she called me.Then, she sent me her resume to ask me for help in her job-hunting.At that time, I found that she was excellent in writing characters and letters.From that time, I began to ask her to write persons' names and addresses on DMs.We sometimes had harsh arguments or troubles, but now we both are very good friends.Actually I used to get physical with her some times.But we are now good friends.

格闘技・闘いの中で、してはいけない事
最近の柔道の試合、特に高校生の試合をみていると、立ち技で投げられたり、或いは、寝技になって不利になるとすぐに亀（手足を縮め、首も顎を引いて、うつぶせになっての防御）の態勢になる選手が多い。が、格闘技では、相手に決して背中を見せない事が鉄則である。背中を見せているということは、どうぞ首を後ろから締めて下さい、関節を取って下さい、と言っている様なものである。展開上、止むを得ず亀になる場合は、ずーと亀になっていては、敗北への道が始まるので、亀になった自分に対して、相手が上から（立ち上がって）攻めようをするときに、亀を外し、相手と向かい合って下から攻める方が良い。リスクはあるものの、その方が、相手をコントロールできる可能性が高い。人生に於いても、相手や敵、仕事に背を向けてはならない。【Ken's Office】

Our Cat
私は小学生の頃、大きな犬に噛み付かれて怪我をしたので、犬はどうも苦手だが、猫は大好きである。実家で飼っている猫は、生後すぐに我が家に来てもう20年近くになる。メスの猫である。人間でいえば何歳位なのか全く判らないが、よくもまあ20年も生きているなあと感心する。我が家で飼った猫の中では歴代1位の長寿である。若い時は、よくネズミをとってきてくれて、店をしている実家にかなり貢献した。以前はすばしこかったが、今は、歩くのもノソノソしている。年なんでしょうがないが。ずーと長生きして欲しい。

Time really flew fast!!
Yesterday, when I was walking up the stairs to my apartment (As U know,I live on the second floor), I met a boy who lives next-door. I saw him wearing his junior high school uniform. So, he is a junior high schooler. I got shocked and felt that time really flew fast. 5 years ago, when I moved to this apartment, he was 9 or so. Very young child he was at that time!! On the same day, I met a lady who said "Hello, sensei" to me. She was one of my student about 6 years ago. Now she's around 18 or 19. I couldn't identify her soon. I think it's high time that I moved to Tokyo.I must hurry for that.【Ken's Office】

プレゼンテーション
Hi, I'm Ken. I'm very happy to study English with youthis month.昨日は、福岡商工会議所主催のビジネス交流会に出展しました。１１回目の交流会ですが、ほぼ毎回参加しております。プレゼンテーションにもすっかり馴れました。Yesterday I joined The 11th Business ExchangeExhibition hosted by Fukuoka Chamber of Commerce& Industry. I have joined this Exhibition almost every time.Yesterday I made a presentation introducing my businessto the audience of over 200 business people.昨日は、イギリス人の企業家も参加しておりましたので、この人には突然で悪かったのですが、私のプレゼンでは、この人を巻き込んで、即興で英会話を見せ、その後、ユニークな一面をみせ、大変皆様の印象に残るプレゼンが出来ました。私のプレゼンテーションへの、参加者の感想をお見せします＞私は今回初参加だったので、最初は様子見的な気持ちだったのですが、＞参加されていらっしゃる方々が様々でそれが非常に刺激になりました。＞なかでも末次さまのプレゼンテーションは際立っていたので、＞一番印象に残っています。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー日本語で恐縮ですが私のプレゼンを再現します尚、プレゼンの時間では、各テーブルにお茶と紙コップが用意されています。全部で２２名の企業家がプレゼンをしました。私は１２番目でした。持ち時間は３分です。ーーーーーーーHi, ladies and gentlemen,I'm Ken Suetsugu. I'm very happy to be here again.This is my.. probably 10th time to have joined this business exchange session.・・・ という風に、いつも英語を使うお仕事をしております。末次通訳事務所、末次で御座います。社名の通り、英語の通訳翻訳をさせて頂いております。今回の交流会のテーマは、[ITビジネス]で御座いますが、御社のホームページの英語版、韓国語、中国語版を作成される場合は、是非、弊所にご用命ください。韓国・中国語については専門担当者に委託しております。もう１つ、ITビジネスに関連しまして、ご案内を致します。＜ここで、会場にイギリス人のマイケル氏を確認し、突然英語に切り替えます。紙コップを上にあげて＞Ken--Mickel! Mickel!Excuse me, please look at this cup. This cup has some English words-- "relax time". Do you think this expression is grammatically correct?Mickel-- Uhm.. This is not very good.Ken--That's right. Thanks.で、皆様、この紙コップをご覧下さい。Relax Time と英語でデザインがされています。今、あちらのイギリスの方に確認しましたら間違っている様です。実は、日本人は、商品のチラシやその他に、とかく、英語を使い勝ちです。日本語を使えば良いのに。大概、その様な英語は間違いが多いのが現状です。そこで、弊所では、皆様が広告やチラシに英語をお使いになる場合にはそれを無償で校正したり、相談に乗ります。掛け値なしの無償ですから、是非、ご活用ください。それでメシを食べる積りはありませんので、無償で結構で御座います。（爆笑）ーーーーーー弊所は、この映像にあります様に、＜二刀一流＞と号しております。二刀流とはどういうものか、皆様にお目に掛けたいと思います。最後に、アンケートを取ります。「へそくり」をされていらっしゃる方は手を挙げてみて下さい（会場爆笑）例えば、＜手書きのパネルを見せて＞「私ね、家内にナイショでへそくりが結構あるんですよ！」というセリフ。これは二刀流では、楽に英語で言えます。皆様が既にご存知の言葉でサッと言えます。＜ここで時間一杯になりましたので＞このセリフの言い方は、ブースにお出で下さいましたら講義を致します。（会場爆笑）是非、ブースにお出でください。有難う御座います。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーという風に進めました。上記のイギリス人は、留学支援をしており、それを代行する旅行代理店を探していらっしゃいます。この人は、日本語が完全でないとのことで、今度、この人が日本の旅行会社と商談する場合は、私が通訳をすることになりました。私見ですが、プレゼンテーションでは、プレゼンターは、概ね、同じパタンになりがちですから、私のプレゼンの様に、多少は変化をつけた方が良いです。また、聴衆を巻き込んだプレゼンテーションもとても良い方法です。私の受講者には、就職試験を受けていらっしゃる方もいますが、面接者を巻き込む、その他の人を巻き込むという手法は双方向（interactive）なプレゼンになり、良い印象として残りますので、皆様も試してみられたら良いですねActually, I wish I would've been able to show my presentationof this to you all. My presentation of this was superb, I am sure.上記の交流会のプレゼンは、１０回目で、さすがに、原稿を作らずとも、その場で上手くプレゼンをする事が出来る様になりました。私は、上がり易いので、何回も何回も、実質、他の方の１０倍多くは、場数を踏まないと、いけないと思います。何でも【修練】として取り組みたいと思い、実践しております。This day, one of my students in Fukuoka kindly helped me as a part-timer. Must I hear that number everyday?これが映画が始って、最初のセリフですガ―シュイン（子供）が、近くのゲームセンターみたいな遊戯施設で、自動演奏ピアノを利用してピアノ演奏を自分で練習しています。が、途中で自動演奏が終わり、また、新規にお金を投入し様として手持ちが無いので、おもちゃを店主にお金に変えてくれないか？と言っている場面ですDad というのは、お父さんという意味もありますが、この場合は、店の人に言っていますので、「オイちゃん」という感じです。★trade in モノ for 新規のもの という表現は、海外で生活する場合は、よく使うかもしれません。nickel は、５セントですね上の英語は、「ねー、おいちゃん、これを５セントで引き取ってよ。」と言う意味合いですね応用：I used to trade many old books in for new books.古本をたくさん下取りに出して新書をかったものです、という意味合いですねーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーMust I hear that number everyday?Must I は、音がつながり[マスタイ]となりますnumber は、自動ピアノが引いていた曲ですね。ですから、「ワシは、あの曲を毎日きかないかんとな？」つまり飽いて聞きたくない、と言う意味合いですねMust I 動詞～ ？の場合は、皮肉を言う場合に使う場合があります。How many times must I tell you to be silent?「静かにしなさいって、何回言えば分かるの？」ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーご参照ください。【Ken's Office】
