映画英語講義
映画で出てきます表現の紹介と練習です：ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 不朽の名作とされる『駅馬車』からです： ローズバーグ行きの駅馬車に、お尋ね者のリンゴーキッドが、途中から乗り込みます。殺された兄貴と父親の敵が、ローズバーグという町にいる事を知って敵を討ちにいっております。 この駅馬車には、横領した銀行家、人の良い酒商人、呑んだくれの医師、売春婦上がりの女、軍人の奥さん、その奥さんを護衛するギャンブラーと色々な人が乗っております。 売春婦上がりの女、ダラスとリンゴキッドは、不良同士ですので、話が合いまして、途中一泊する宿場で、リンゴがダラスに求婚します。 この宿舎では、既にアパッチが来襲するかもしれない危険性があり、その中で、軍人の奥さんが産気づいて、赤ちゃんを産みます。医師のブーン先生がよく働きましたね。当然、ダラスは加勢をして赤ちゃんを抱いたり面倒を見ます。 －－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－ ＤＶＤお持ちの方は、開始から、50分の所です Ringo: You oughtn't go too far, Miss. Dallas. Apaches like to sneak up and pick off strays. You are visiting Roseburg ? (中略) Look, Ms. Dallas. You've got no forks, neither have I. Maybe, I'm taking a lot for granted but... I watched you with that baby,other woman's baby.. You looked well... Well, I still got a ranch across the border, It's a nice place, really nice place... trees, grass, water. ★お知らせ★１）2007年1月31日（水）に、 第1回ビジネス英語翻訳講座（無料）を天神にて 行います。詳細は、次のURLをご参照下さいませ。 http://plaza.rakuten.co.jp/niten/3030２）弊所では、携帯電話を使っての英語習得の為の通信講座をも 実施中です。詳細は、次のURLをご参照下さい： http://plaza.rakuten.co.jp/niten/3001－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－弊所では、＜兵法英語二刀一流＞と号しております。これは、二刀流兵法の開祖・新免（宮本）武蔵先生に因んでおります。武蔵先生の兵法や剣道の様に、斬れ味の鋭い英語通翻訳技術をより一層向上させて、それを以って、企業の皆様のお役に立ちたいと常に思っております。 今年最後の配信では、＜末次二刀流＞のごく一端をお目にかけたいと存じます。 １）「弊社にて当該サンプルを製造し送付いたしましたので、 この件について、貴社のご助言を頂けましたら幸いです。」 We made the samples and shipped them to youfor your advice. と言う風に、単に「your advice」と訳する翻訳者や通訳者が多いかと思います。 ですが、弊所の流儀では、We made the samples and shipped them to youfor your professional advice. という風にします。 「貴社のご助言を」とあるからには、相手の会社は、その製品については専門家であります。ですので、単に、for your advice とするよりもfor your professional advice とするほうが、ビジネスもより具体的に展開できる事に結実しますし、より具体的な姿勢である事を先方にも伝える事が出来ます。 この様な、ほんのちょっとした言い回しをして、話を具体化・明確化させる事が末次二刀流であります。それは、日本語を、表面的な文字に囚われずに、日本語で言いたい内容を、英語の論理に乗せて訳を行うからです。 ２）「「カレチン」というのも多分靴メーカーでの呼び名なので ＊ポリウレタンと同一なのかどうかは分からないそうです」They told us that Karetine was the term used among shoe makers(/manufactures).＊They don't know if Karetine is the same material as polyurethane. この箇所も、一般的には、上の様になります。 ですが、「末次二刀流」では*They don't know if Karetine is exactly the same material as polyurethane.となります。★ exactly を補って、完全に同一かどうか、と意味内容を明確化、 強調化します。 ３）「今回のテストでは洗濯機でよく使われている洗剤を 3種使いました」 「よく使われる」→ commonの発想で、In this washing test, we used three kinds of detergentwhich are commonly used. とか In this washing test, we used three major kinds ofdetergent which are commonly used. という風にします。 ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ＜二刀流＞とは、日→英の際には、日本語の内容を英語の論法・論理に乗せて言う・英→日の場合には、英語の意味を、日本語で判り易い様に言う。 これが私の流儀です。また、ビジネス英語では、物事は明確にスパッと言うほうが宜しいですから、平易で頻度の高い単語(特に動詞）を使って、相手に納得性を持たせる言い方をします。 私の流儀は、上がベースになります。 賛否の分かれる事ですが、ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。 【末次通訳事務所】

映画英語
映画で出てきます表現の紹介と練習です：ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 今回も、邦画 『男はつらいよ』 からです。 渥美清さん主演のこの映画は、よく海外への飛行機の機内で上映されていました。勿論、英語への吹き替えでの上映です。その翻訳は、William Ross さんがなさっており、多くの寅さん映画が英語になりましたその台本から取上げます。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー １．『どうしたの？目にゴミでも入ったの？』 What's wrong? Do you have something in your eyes? 2. 『貴方に会えないけど、くれぐれも宜しく、と言ってましたよ』 He had no time to see you and said hello to you. または、 He apologized for not seeing you and sent his best wishes to you. 3.『ま、何もないけど、一杯いこうじゃないか！』 Let's start to drink. Here take a glass. ですね 4. 『それじゃ聞きますが、兄さんは女の人に惚れた事はないんですか？ え、どうなんですか？』 I've got another question. Have you fallen in love with a woman?Answer me!! 5.『冗談じゃない、10万や20万では買えやしないよ！』Don't talk silly. 駅馬車と仮定法＃１
皆様、いつもお世話になります。末次通訳事務所がお届けします、無償英語講義です： ★お知らせ★ 弊所・【末次通訳事務所】は、今年は、明日１２月２７日で業務を終了致します。急ぎの御依頼分などは２８日以降でも対応できますので、ご安心下さいませ。 ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 私は、映画、しかも古い映画が好きでよく観ています。中でも、『駅馬車』は、１千回近く観ています。この映画では、仮定法の表現が多く使われます：◎仮定法は実際にはありえない事を言う表現形式で、 例えば、タイムマシンなどありませんが、 ＜今タイムマシンがあれば、宮本武蔵に会いに行くのに＞という 言い方をするのが仮定法です。１） ＜If 主語 動詞過去形～、主語 助動詞過去形 動詞原形～＞ のパタン＜現在の事実に反する過程＞家賃を払わないので、お医者のブーン(Doc. Boone)が女性地域風紀委員会（Ladies of Law and Order League）から町を追い出されます。売春婦のダラスもそうです。その時に、酒場に行って、店主のJerryに頼んでツケで一杯だけ飲もうとします。その時のやり取りです：B: Jerry, I have to admit as one man to another, Economically I haven't been of much value to you, but suppose you could put one on credit? 男同士の話ばってん、 金銭的に、あんまりこの店に貢献しとらんけど、 一杯ツケで飲ませちゃらんね？J: If talk was money, you would be the best customer I got. 金の話なら、お前が一番の上客て！これは、皮肉を言っているのです。仮定法は、実際にはありえない事を言います。つまり、お前は金払いが一番悪い、という事を仮定法を使って逆に言って、皮肉っています。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー２） couldn't / wouldn't の使い方軍人の奥さんマロリーは軍人の妻として、気位が高い、貴婦人です。が、実は身ごもっています。この映画の最初の舞台になる停車地、Tonto（トント）に到着したとき、他の知り合いの奥さん連中に歓迎されますが、次の駅に向けて出発する時に、奥さん連中から次の様にアドバイスされます：FriendA: You' re not well enough, Mallory? 体調よくないんでしょ。M: Only a few hours! I'm quite all right. 2－3時間だから。大丈夫よ。A: But you shouldn't travel a step without a doctor お医者もいないのに、旅をするなんてM: There is a doctor, dear. The driver told me. お医者はいる、ってよ。FriendB: Doctor? Doc. 映画英語表現＃５
不朽の名作とされる『駅馬車』からです ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 駅馬車の最後のせりふは、保安官とブーン医師のやり取りです。 Marshal： They will be saved from the blessings of the civilization. Doc, I'll buy you a drink.Doc: Just one! 映画の最後は、保安官が自分で折角確保したリンゴキッドとダラス(娼婦あがり）を馬車に乗せて逃がしてあげます。(get away with it)リンゴキッドは、親父から譲り受けた牧場があります。そこで、生活しろ、と言う事です。 純粋な若者らは、自分らの牧場で、文明社会の害に毒されずに生活して欲しいという願いが上のせりふに込められています。 blessings は、普通は、恵みや恩恵、という意味合いですが、ここでは、逆に、害悪という意味で反語的に使われています。 I'll buy you a drink.は、お酒をご馳走する(おごるよ）という意味合いです。 a drink の位置に、色々な物を入れるとそれを買ってあげる、飲食物の場合は、ご馳走する、という意味合いですね I sometimes buy my students something to drink. という感じです。 ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

駅馬車から ＃３－４
以下、映画表現の講義 ですーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 不朽の名作とされる『駅馬車』からです２つのシーンからです 映画英語表現＃３ 映画『駅馬車』から： 開始から１９分～２１分位のシーン お尋ね者のリンゴキッドが、駅馬車に乗り込みます。指名手配をされている人間ですので、皆乗客が偏見的に、リンゴキッドを見ます。ですが、ブーン先生は違いました。 Doc: Seems to me I know your family,Henry（リンゴキッドの本名）. Didn't I fix your arm when you were bucked off a horse? お前の家族とは馴染みなんだよ。 前に落馬した時、腕の怪我を治したろ？ Ringo Kid: Are you Doc. Boone? ブーン先生ですか？ Doc: I certainly am. その通り！ Ringo: That was my brother.（あれは兄貴さ） You did a good job, even if you WAS drunk. 先生、あの時、酒が入っていたけど、 いい腕しているよね Doc.：What happened to that boy whose arm I fixed? （俺が診た子は元気にしとうね？） 関係代名詞です：that boy whose(=his) arm I fixed という流れですね。 Ringo： He was murdered. （兄貴は殺されたんだ） 西部劇ですし、砕けている会話ですのでyou were drunkとするべきところをyou was drunk としております。これは、語法上は間違いですが、この手の言い方はよくされます。但し、仲間内の言い方です ------------------------------------ 映画英語表現＃4 Hatfield： Put out that cigar! タバコやめれ！ You're annoying this lady. こちらの女性が迷惑しとろうが！ Doc： Excuse me, Ma'am. Being so partial to the weed myself, I sometimes forget that it disagrees with others. being so partial to the weed *the weedは、葉巻 ですね be partial to --で、～に病み付きになる、ということですね 大変失礼。葉巻が大好きで、かえって 他人の迷惑を顧みない時があるんですよ。 Hatfield： Gentleman doesn't smoke in the presense of a lady. ⇒これは一般論です。 紳士（というもの）は、女（性）の前でタバコは吸わんとたい！ Doc.： Three weeks ago, I took a bullet out of a man who was shot by a gentleman. GIVEの表現

映画英語表現＃２ 映画『駅馬車』から： 妊娠している軍人の妻が、奥さん連中に別れを告げて駅馬車で、夫のいる町まで赴こうとする時のやりとりです。 A： There's a doctor, the driver told me. 「お医者はいるらしいわよ。御者が言ってたわ」 B： Doctor? Doc. Boone. 映画表現＃１
映画英語表現＃１ 初回は、私の趣味で済みませんが、『駅馬車』からです私はこの映画は、1000回は観ていますので多くのセリフをソラで覚えております。 私が好きなセリフは幾つか在りますが、これはその1つです以前受講者の方で、駅馬車の500円DVDを貰っている方はその場面をご覧下さい。開始から1時間1分のシーンです Ringo Kid： There're some things a man just can't run away from. これは、ローズバーグという場所まで、駅馬車で赴いて自分の兄弟を殺害した、プラマー兄弟3名を相手に敵を取る（ジョン・ウエイン演じる）リンゴーキッドの話です。 敵討ちなんてしないでほしい、という恋人のせりふに対して放った名言です。 「男には逃げられないものがあるのさ！」 上の英語は、主語を変えたりしたら色々と使い勝手があります勉強やスポーツ練習から逃げてしまう学生さんや選手に対してYou have some things you can't run away from. が良い例です 実は、私が好きな邦画『宮本武蔵・般若坂の決闘』で萬屋錦之助演じる、武蔵が、上と同じ様なセリフを言います。それは、『逃げられないのが武士というものだ！』 浪人衆との決闘を前にしてのセリフですね。 この武蔵のせりふを、そのままリンゴキッドのセリフの訳に充てる事が出来ます。同じ内容ですからね。 映画英語表現＃２ ２つめは、邦画『男はつらいよ！』より 「そこが渡世人の辛（つれえ）ところよ」 We have to go through a tough part of our life.ですね 他の訳としては This is a tough part of our life we have to live with. とかでも良いでしょう。 他に何か訳があれば皆様、お送り下さい また、皆様で、好きな映画のせりふなどがありましたら教えてください。ご紹介します。 映画は最高の英語教材ですから、何とか、この講義で活用していきたいですね。 私は、最近の外国の映画はあまり観ませんので、役者さんとか誰が誰かさっぱり判りません。映画の話をされましても私は付いていけません。これは、通訳者としてはいけないことと思います。この講義をする様になれば、自ずと観ざるを得なくなると思いましてはじめます。 末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

言葉の意味
「言葉の意味は、言葉が発言される状況により、 変わるモノです。」これは、以前に申しましたね。This is our problem. とは、「これは、僕らの問題です（だから、皆で解決しましょう）」との意味です。our をtheirに変えますと、This is their problem. これは、『田中さん達の問題です（だから、関わらない様にしましょう）』等との意味になります。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー尚、もう一点：英語では、最初に『田中さんは～～』、と言って、次のセリフで『田中さんの息子さんが～～』と言う場合、２回目の田中さんをheに変えてしまって簡単に言える様にしております。例えば、A『田中さんは、還暦をむかえたんだってね？』B『そしたら、田中さんは、もう、６０になるの？ まだ、若く見えるね』 Ｃ 『で、（田中さんの）息子さんが、赤いちゃんちゃんこを プレゼントしたらしいね』 上のBのセリフの『そしたら、田中さん』の田中さんは、 英語では、heで言います。一回、名前などが出てきて、誰のことかわかれば、heになります。上のＣのセリフでは、田中さんの息子さんは：His sonとなります。尤も、日本語では、普通は、（息子さんが）だけで言うと思いますが。このhe を 殆どの方が 彼は、と訳し、his son を 彼の息子 と訳しますね。しかし、he を彼、 sheを彼女 they彼ら と 訳すのは間違いです。同じく their彼らの his彼の her 彼女の と訳すのも間違いですね学校では、he:彼、sheを彼女としますが、これは、言葉のニュアンスと言う点からみれば、間違いと思います。例えば、her busと言う場合、日本語では、（彼女の乗っているバス）等という言い方は、あんまりしませんし、日本語らしくない言い方です。例えば、佐藤さんが乗ったバス、など、具体的な人の名前でいったりしますし、their busでしたら、佐藤さん達が乗ったバスなどと言います。更に、『私の父は、６０才です。 父の趣味は、囲碁です』を英語で言う場合、"My father is 60. His hobby is GO."となります。この英語を日本語で言うとき、（私の父は、６０才です。彼の趣味は、囲碁）とは言いませんね。英語では、父親の事でも、he,hisなどを使いますが、日本語では、父親のことを彼、彼の趣味などとは言いませんね。つまり、日本語では、あんまり、彼らの、彼女のなどという言い方はしませんね。状況に応じて具体的な名前や愛称、または、あの人達などという言い方になります。発話状況に応じて、英語の意味を柔軟に（日本語らしく）捉える事を試してみてください。その方が逆に、英語の意味合いを正確に把握できます。中学、高校、大学、英語塾や英会話学校でも私の意見の様な事柄を教えれば、良いのですが。ご質問は何なりと。末次通訳事務所末次賢治 拝ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

【動詞の変化について】 過去分詞 過去形と過去分詞の区別が判らないという声を聞きますので、解説します。 一般に、broken, had は、過去分詞と言いますが、過去分詞から過去を取り去って、「分詞」と呼称しても良いです。むしろ、動詞型形容詞と言うべきですね 現在形 過去形 過去分詞中学の頃は、come - came - come run - ran - run hit - hit - hit have - had - had などと覚えたものですね。 以前も申しましたが、英語では、時間、それ自体に意味があります。現在形は、普段から～している、あるいは、習性として～している過去形は その時～したが、今はそうでない、 現在と過去をつなぐ言い方は、それ以来ずーと～～している、⇒いわゆる現在完了形ですね 過去分詞は、動詞から派生した形容詞と、私は考えています。 １００％の動詞ではありません。 過去形は、以前～した、という意味合いです 過去分詞形は、動作の時間の変化でなくて、(動作の結果の）状態の変化を意味します 昨日何者かが学校の窓を 2－3枚割りましたSomeone broke a couple of windows yesterday. 昨日の事ですから、動詞を過去形にして表現します これが、割られた窓です。They are the broken windows. 仮に、昨日窓が割られたとしても、いま、現場に割られた窓があれば、現在であっても brokenと言います。これは、この場合、過去分詞形は、時間に関係なく brokenですねしかし、動作（割る）の結果、窓の状態が変化していますので、brokenとなります。 過去分詞形は、どちからといえば、動作の状態変化に意味があります。動作による状態変化の際には過去分詞形を使います。 一方、過去形は、動作の時間上の変化ですね ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。ご意見は何なりと 【Ken's Office】

BREAK
【BREAK】 と前置詞の組み合わせ BREAK の根本の意味合いは、「状態が (良くも/悪くも）突然変化する」と言う意味合いです それに、前置詞が組み合わさって色々意味がいえます。 BREAK は、状態が～～の様に変わります、という意味合いでしかなく、具体的には、前置詞で、意味が決定します。ですから、前置詞の意味合いさえ掴んでいれば、動詞が何であっても意味が最初から掴めます。 1)聖子と正輝は、だいぶん前に離縁した。 Seiko and Masaki broke up many years ago. または、Seiko broke up with Masaki-- Masaki broke up with Seiko--ですね up は、上部へ という意味合いですこれから転じて、最後の到達点まで高まって、ということです。 夫婦仲が、突然（の切っ掛けで）変化して、行く所まで行った、というのは break up ですね ２）俺のパソコンはよう故障するってねえ。 My PC often breaks down. これを、本当にすかんばい、というネガティブな感じを出すにはThe problem is that my PC often breaks down. となります down は、調子が悪い、と言う事ですからbreak で、pcの調子が突然変化して、悪くなる、という事ですから「故障する、調子が悪くなる」と言う意味合いです ３） 昨日大きな火事が発生しました。A big fire broke out yesterday. out は、外へ、という意味合いですね 隠れている物が外に出れば、皆から見えますので（例えば、机の下に入れておいたペンを表に出せば ペンは、見えます。それがoutですね）モノが見える、という事は、モノがはっきり、していると言う事ですからbreak out は、状態が変化して、見える様になる、ハッキリする⇒発生となります 災害や疫病の発生と言う場合に使います ４） 一流の駅伝選手は、シューズをきちんと履き馴らして 使います Top-flight ekiden runners always break in their new shoes. in とは、中にある状態ですね入っていくのは、into ですが、in は、既にモノが中に入って収まっています。 つまり、in とは、収まり ということです。break in で、状態が変化して、収まる（収まり状態になる）と言う事から靴を履き馴らす、という意味合いです ５）以前、実家に泥棒が入った事があります. A thief broke into my parents' house before. into は、中に入っていく ということですから 突然、（急に）中に入っていく、ということですから押し入る、という意味合いですね。 ６）戦前、日本は国際連盟を脱退した Japan broke away from League of Nations before the war. *away from--：は、～から外れる、ということですから急に脱退した、という事になります ７）この人は親類との縁を切りたかったが、出来なかった。He tried to break off with his relatives,but he couldn't. break off with 人：は、人との縁を切る、絶縁する ですね off は、離れた状態 ですから人と離れた状態になる、ということですね 関係を打ち切る、という意味合いになります 8) この科学者は、ついにこの問題を突破して、機械を発明したHe finally broke through this problem and invented this machine. break through ですが、throughは、通り抜ける、と言う事ですから、突破すると言う意味合いですね------------------------------------------------- 私は、break という単語が好きですね。それは、使い勝手が広いからです 上記の break+前置詞の組み合わせは、そのまま一語の単語(名詞）になります breakup 離縁、破局、別居 breakout 発生（breakthrough＝突破、突破口、糸口、きっかけbreakin ＝侵入、試運転、試行breakaway ＝分離breakdown=故障、神経衰弱 【Ken's Office】

講義：ある手紙から
さて、講義です。★今日は、特別に、あるお手紙を題材にします。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーDear Mr. Suetugu:I will be happy to have you come see me here at our little cottage.★I will be happy to have you come see me here.=「ご足労頂けるとは光栄です」、と言う意味ですね。 このまま、覚えておかれて使える様にしましょう。However, please do not go out of your way★please do not go out of your way=「お気遣い成されません様に」と言う意味に相当します。 このまま覚えて使える様にしましょう。to adjust your professional scheduling.I am retired, and my time is more easily adjusted than yours.My appointment in Tokyo is now tentatively set at January 16.★tentatively=取り敢えず仮の、仮に と言う事です。This pushes down my speaking engagement at Futukaichi to late January.These are all tentative dates, and my flight reservations have notbeen made.So, as they say, let's play by ear.★ let's play by ear=「臨機応変に参ります」 と言う事です。 もともと音楽から来た言葉で、楽譜を見ないで 音を聞いて、即興で演奏すると言う事から、 臨機応変にする、と言う意味です。 ジャズの用語です。 Sincerely,ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー全文を訳しませんが、皆様は、各自練習として意味を掴んでみてくださいませ。大変、表現のきれいな手紙です。この手紙は、レーガン大統領や昭和天皇の通訳をなされた方（日系人の方）の手紙です。大分に別荘を持っておられますので、今度、色々教えを請いにお会いにいくので、コンタクトをさせて頂いております。日本人では使えない英語で書かれており思わず、題材にさせていただきました。---------------------------------------------＜兵法・英語二刀一流＞末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝
