最も安全な都市 World's safetest city
エコノミスト誌が発表した2015年の世界で最も安全な都市は東京だというので驚いた。次がシンガポールで、この2つの人口過密なアジアの大都市が最も安全だというので意外な感じを持たれたようだ。次が大阪とストックホルムで、5位がオランダの首都アムステルダムである。アムステルダムは麻薬や売春の取締りに甘い都市で、この点で意外だと感じられているようだ。その後はシドニー、トロント、メルボルン、ニューヨークの順で、これを報道したCNNがアメリカでは10位以内に入っているのは一都市だけだとコメントしていたが、逆に私にはアメリカの都市がこの順位に評価されるのは信じがたい。この安全都市決定の基準はＩＴの安全性、健康およびインフラと個人の安全性だということで、相当広い範囲の安全性を意味しているようだ。世界50の大都市を調べた中で、最下位はインドネシアのジャカルタで、その前の5都市はメキシコ市、リヤド、ヨハネスブルグ、ホーチミン、テヘランということだ。面白いことに、住み易い、あるいは住みたい都市の一位はトロント、次いでモントリオールで、東京は16位である。このことから住民は安全性以外のものを重視しているようだという結論的コメントがあった。A British journal Economist released a list of the world's safest cities in 2015. Tokyo was ranked top, followed by Singapole. It seemed surprising to people in the world that these two populous Asian cities are top in the list. Then come Osaka and Stockholm. Amsterdam is in fifth. This is also a bit surprising, because Amsterdam does not take tight measures against drug trafficking and prostitution. Other top ten cities are Sydeny, Tronto, Merborn and New York. CNN that reported these results commented that New York is the only American city to make ten. But to be honest I didn't expect that any American city is ranked within top ten. These ranks of safe cities were determined on the basis of digital safety, health security, infrastructure and personal security. So the safety here has quite broad meaning. In the last place of the list is the Indonesian capital Jakarta among 50 big cities. The final five cities ahead of it are Mexico city, Riyadh, Johannesburg, Ho Chi Minh city and Tehran.But interestingly the best city to live in polled also by Economist is Tronto followed by Montreal, and Tokyo comes 16th. Thus it is suggested that residents does not put safety first.

中国人の人種差別観 Racism in China
中国のテレビで洗剤のコマーシャルが人種差別だとしてヨーロッパ、アメリカで非難され、スポンサーが謝るという事件があった。中国の美人が黒人を誘惑して洗濯機に入れて洗った結果、白い（青白い）中国人男性に変わるというものである。国内での放送だがこれを見たフランス人がインターネットに動画で流して欧米で大きな反響を呼んだ。コマーシャル関連で中国での人種差別の例としては、他にもスターウオーズの宣伝ポスターで黒人主人公を小さく描くとか、黒人差別を示唆する人気の製品名が出回っているという。しかし中国人の人種差別、特に黒人に対するものはそれほどひどいものではないという解説を読んだ。中国に住む外国人の大部分は大都市におり、従ってほとんどの中国人は外国人に接する機会は少なく、黒人は好奇心の対象であっても差別観は持っていないという。ただ色の白いのが上流社会の人間で黒いのは貧しい労働者だという一般的な考えがあるというのは日本と同じのようだ。黒人蔑視の傾向は欧米のメディアに接することの多い一部の人達だと指摘している。こうした傾向は日本でも数十年前までは同じだったと感じるが、ここに挙げられたような明らかに差別的な例は日本にはなかったと思う。この騒ぎは欧米人自身の人種差別観に基づくもので、中国には黒人に対する差別意識は少ないというのがこの解説記事の結論だった。TV detergent commercial in China was criticized for racism, causing global debate over anti-black racism. The sponser apologized for the ad. In this commercial a pretty Chinese woman push a black man into a washing machine after flirting gesture toward him. A few seconds later a pale Chinese young man emerged from the washing machine. A French man saw this ad and posted on the web. The article reporting this incident introduced other examples of racism in ads found in China; The poster of Star Wars in which the black protagonist is minimized, and the popularity of the name for toothpaste which is allusive to anti-black racism. However an American researcher points out that the racism in China is not so bad as many Western people think. Most foreigners in China live in big cities, that means, majority Chinese have never met a black person. They are curoius, but not hateful. However Chinese tend to associate dark skin with working in the field, with a poor peasant and pale skin with the wealthier, as we Japanese do. Only limited number of people who are exposed to Western media have anti-black racism similar to that of Western people. This was the case in Japan a few decades ago, but I don't think there have been ads in Japan that showed such obvious racism. The article concluded that this incident stems from western people's racism, and does not indicate serious racism prevailing in China.

最も安全な航空会社 The world's safest airline
航空関連の団体が選んだ世界で最も安全な航空会社のリストが毎年発表されている。2016年は世界中の407の航空会社のうちオーストラリアのカンタス航空が3年連続で第一位だった。これを含めた上位20社には 日本からは日航と全日空が入っている。アジアでは他にシンガポール航空と香港のキャシーパシフィック航空が選ばれている。その他は私が乗ったことのある会社だけをあげると、アメリカンエアライン、ユナイテッドエアライン、ＫＬＭ、ルフトハンザが入っている。また、低価格航空（ＬＬＣ）でも最も安全な10社を選んでいるが、この中で私が知っているのはジェットスターだけだった。逆に安全性の低い航空会社として挙げられた10社はすべてネパール、インドネシア、スリラムの会社だということである。この安全性順位は政府と関連の機関による検査および死亡事故の記録に基づいて決定したということである。（参考のために、上位20社と低価格航空10社の全ての名を英訳文中に記載した）。この調査とは異なるが、ベルギーの空港でのテロを始め、最近テロリストによる空港での事故が多いので、空港の安全性も関心を集めている。ある報告によると、世界で最も安全な空港は意外にもイスラエルのベングリオン空港だという。この空港では1972年の日本赤軍の事件以来テロ事件は起こってないということである。これはもちろん安全性の検査が厳しいということで、すべての旅行者、乗務員、空港の従業員が厳重に監視されているようだ。この検査はアラブ人に厳しく人種差別という批判もあるそうである。The list of the safest airlines were released by an organizationcalled "AirlineRatings.com". Quantas Airways of Australia leads the 407 airlines in the world. Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathy Pacific are in top twenty from Asia. Others include American Airlines, United Airlines, KLM and Lufthanza, just to name some. The organization also named top ten low-cost airlines (LCC). Among them I know only Jetstar. On the other hand airlines of the lowest safety ratings are all from Nepal, Indonesia and Surinam. This rating is based on the audits by aviation's governing bodies and lead associaton as well as government, and the airline's fatality records.The safety of airport is also great concern of many travelers, because there were several terrorisms occurring at the airports such as one at Brussels airport in Belgium in march this year. To my surprise the world's safest airport is Ben Gurion in Israel. There has no terrorist attack at this airport since 1972 when Japanese Red Army killed and injured many people. The safety of this airport is due to heavy security measures. Unfortunately those measures are sometimes criticized as racism.The top twenty of saftest airports:American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Quantas Airways, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia. The top ten safest low-cost airlines:Aer Lingus, Flybe, HK Express, Jetblue, Jetstar Australia, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly, Virgin America, Volaris and Westjet.
