I wrote today’s title “Fierce heat”, first. But it was going to be hotter, so I changed the title. But its content is heat. It gets hotter and hotter, isn’t it? From what I hear, a Japan size of iceberg in the South Pole has melted this summer. I study home in the morning, and go to university afternoon. But it seems that I had better escape to the air-conditioned laboratory in haste. By the way, someone point out using air-conditioner accelerates global warming. At any rate, I’d like to ring a wind-bell in my mind.

When I talked with Y, a close friend of mine, she said, “You always work too hard. You study too hard, and you play too hard. So you never have a pastime. But it is your personality, and good point, too. I think you may do as much as you can to your heart’s content.” That’s quite right, Y! Thank you for your friendship, and please let me go your room sometimes.

To tell the truth, I could not have soaked in the bath for about 3weeks since I skinned my left knee. For, my festering wound forced me to take a shower wrapping my knee by vinyl. Today I knew how happy I am to take a bath in an ordinary way for the first time. I’ll take care not to stumble like a schoolgirl.

It seems that we realize the preciousness of health when we lose it. So I may not learn her sorrow first-hand. But I have come to think of my health as a gift than before. And I appreciate her to have informed me about her. I sincerely hope she will overcome again.

She says in the letter, “Although I came back to Korea looking forward to studying more and working. But I couldn’t. I have shed bitter tears for a long time. Human has boundless potentialities, but on the other hand, human is extremely weak. And we can’t take consideration to ourselves and others without health.”

Her New Year’s card in two years ago told me she got married happily. I sent a congratulatory card and we have been out of touch for a year. The recent letter told me that she has been injured her health. She had repeated entering hospital and having operation. And a long time let her write the letter to me mentally and physically at last.

I received airmail from a fiend of mine who lives in Korea. I acquainted with her in Uwajima youth hostel 2years ago. She is a Korean, and had studied in Japan at the time. She had studied Japanese in order to be a Japanese instructor. She spoke Japanese so frequent that I couldn’t notice she was a foreigner. We shared room in a night. We had exchanged mails after that. And she came back to her country.

This is one of my favorite books. When I read it first time, scenery seemed to change for me. Its author, FRANKL is a psychiatrist who has come back alive from Auschwitz concentration camps. He says, “Human doesn’t live for pleasure originally. It is important to change the question what we can expect for our life to what our life expect for us.” So I’ll go without fear, my life will give me everything my life needs.

The morning when I went to university after having my hair straight, I walked in a happy mood. My heard was so happy that my legs couldn’t follow it. In other words, I slipped and fell down in front of the nearest station. My blood was running from my palm and knee. And my white skirt stained with blood forced me to go back to home.

I have unruly hair. So I long for straight hair. If I have my hair straight, ordinary permanent can’t effect. Straightening unruly permanent is needed. An advertisement for reduction in price of it had me go to beauty parlor. After 4 hours I came into that, I walk with a light step with my hair rustled in the wind.

That was my first time to speak in English on the phone. I have guessed it was almost impossible for me. Because I can neither show by a gesture nor communicate by means of writing on the phone. But the most important thing is courage, courage for the strange. By the way, the words I couldn’t follow may be “Can you visit this embassy?”

“Hello?” He broke the silence. “Hello!” I replied in a hurry. “Then, where do you live?”“Ah, I live in … (I was at a loss whether he knows such a country I live or not) .”I answered a name of city where my campus exists after all. “Oh, so I’ll send a fax to you, OK?” “Yes, I’d like you to send an application form by fax!!” “Please tell me your fax number.”

Regaining control of myself, I called to the embassy of Zambia again. “This is the embassy of Zambia, good morning.” “Good morning. I’d like to get the visa to Zambia.” “Ok. Can you??? (Not understand) to the embassy?” I could understand only the word “embassy”. What is relation between visa and embassy?Long silence has come.

As I will go to Africa this summer, I need an entry visa to Zambia. So I phoned to an embassy of Zambia. Contrary to my expectation, a voice heard over the telephone was English. He asked, “Can you speak English?” I chickened out and accidentally answered “No!” After I hung up, I got depressed. My daily English study of English has little meaning. What my effort for?

“Don’t make an excuse.” It’s my motto in recent days. As I study in my laboratory, I feel strongly that the most hardworking person doesn’t make excuse. Some people pay one’s school expenses studying, and some people challenge unknown task. I’m ashamed to have said “I am very busy” as if only I made effort.「言い訳するな」というのを最近肝に銘ずるようにしている.

My sister’s birthday is coming. I wonder what I give her a present. She and our mother gave me a perfume for my birthday. But she already has one. And she is so particular about her appearance that I can’t chose thoughtless accessories. So I come up with CD. I bought a new album of Utada Hikaru, “Deep river.”
