We are very happy to have you here. Let me give you some information about our company. We are 70 years old this year. We have a good reputation in the Wagashi (Japanese Confectionary) business.We have eight (8) branches and 20 shops all over Japan.We also have 5 branches in Europe and US. We have about excellent 1,000 workers. 小説『宮本武蔵』（吉川英治著）より 好きな場面＃１
吉川英治著『宮本武蔵』を、そのまま史実として、宮本武蔵を考えるむきが多いのですが、著者ご自身も言っている通り、小説『宮本武蔵』はあくまでもフィクションであります。この小説の土台になったのは江戸時代に書かれた『武公記』『二天記』で、また、思想的には『五輪書』が投影されています。『五輪書』は武蔵自身の著作ですが、二天記や武公記も、中国の伝記小説の手法を元にフィクションとして誇張して、後世の門人が師を讃えて書かれていますので創作が結構入っております。それを元にした小説『宮本武蔵』そのものがフィクションであります。ですが、この小説に流れる武蔵の思想などは、兵法二天一流に流れるものと同じであります。－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－この小説には幾つもの名場面があります。私が最も好きな箇所の一つは・・・～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～(伊達政宗の家臣から、ジョブハンティングのオファーを出された後の場面です）別な部屋に分かれて、枕についてからも、武蔵は目が冴えていた。－－士道。じっと、そこに、思索をあつめているうちに、武蔵は、忽然と、それを自己の剣に顧みて悟った。－－剣術。それではいけないのだ。－－剣道。飽くまで剣は道でなければならない。謙信や政宗が唱えた士道には、多分に軍律的なものがある。自分は、それを、人間的な内容に、深く、高く、突き極めてゆこう。小なる一個の人間というものがどうすれば、その生命を託す自然と融合調和して、天地の宇宙大と共に呼吸し、安心と立命（りつみょう）の境地へ達し得るか、得ないか、行ける所まで行ってみよう。その完成を志して行こう。剣を「道」と呼ぶところまで、この一身に、徹してみる事だ。－－そう心に決定をつかんでから、武蔵は深く眠りに落ちた。－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－同じく、英語には、英語の道があります。上に書かれた理念で英語の道を進みたいと思います。【Ken's Office】

道具と英語動詞＃２
英語でご飯を頂く様になりまして、10年ちかくなります。私は、何でも、＜勝負＞の心で、日々の業務やこうした配信サービスを実施しております。 自分にとっては英語は 「斗う英語」 であります。この配信も皆様の理解を得られれば勝ち、そうでなければ自分の負けと思って、日々取り組んでおります。この様な事を言いますと、奇異に思われる方もおられましょうが、私の場合は、真実ですし、こうした気持ちで自分を鼓舞して参りましたのでしょうがありません。 －－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－昨日に続きまして、道具と英語動詞について取上げます： ＊ pen は、ペンの事ですが、 動詞で、「文章などをペンで書く」という意味合いがあります 1) I tried to pen a short story when I was young. 若い頃、短編のお話を書こうとした事がありました。 2) This is a novel penned by a young author. これはまだ若い作家の書いた小説です。 pen には、他にも、bull pen （野球のブルペンでおなじみの）檻小屋、という意味があります。 pen は、監獄という意味合いで使う場合があります。西部劇を観ていると出てきますね。 『駅馬車』から 御者： I thought Ringo was in the pen. リンゴキッドはム所にいるんじゃ？ 保安官： He WAS! この間まではな！ ですので、PEN は、檻、という意味合いですと、人やものを檻に入れる、という意味合いがあります。 PEN で思い出しましたが、PENCILも動詞になります。 ★ pencil ですと、～～を鉛筆で書く(描く、記す、消す）という意味合いです He penciled his name but later he penciled it off.自分の名前を書いたが、あとから消した、という意味合いです ★ pencilには、眉毛をまゆ墨で引く、という意味合いもあります。 She always pencils her eyebrows beautifully before her dates. デートの前には、必ず、眉をきれいに描く、という事ですね【末次通訳事務所】

猪と英語
お世話になります。好例の干支の講義です： 皆さんは、ボタン鍋を召し上がった事がありますか？私は、12年前、通訳として、天彦産業勤務時代に、金剛山登山の際に、ふもとで食べた事があります。意外に美味しいですね。 さて、 猪を使う日本語では、主に次のものがあります。 １）猪突猛進 He's a person who rushes ahead recklessly. ですね 向こう見ずというか無鉄砲的に前に急いで進む人ですね要するに無鉄砲で、「直情怪行」型の人ですね。 日本語の意図では、猪突猛進は良い意味ですが、英語ではどちらかといえば、ネガティブな意味合いです。 前向きに言うと、He's a person who tries to achieve his goals enthusiastically. ですね ２）猪口才な 「ちょこざいな」とは、生意気な、という事ですね小ざかしい、という意味合いもあります 時代劇のセリフにありますね。 「猪口才な（口を利くな）！」Don't be saucy.ですね saucy とは、 harmlessly, perhaps, amusingly and disrespectfully ですね悪気がないけど、少しからかってやろうとする気持ちですね ３）お猪口（ぐいのみ） small sake cup ですね I used to have my own small sake cup at my parents' house. ４）猪武者 a reckless person ですね 無鉄砲な人のことですね ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

道具と動詞＃１
弊所で最近研究しておりますが、「道具」を意味する名詞は、動詞として使えます。その道具を使って作業をする、という意味合いになります。そして、比ゆ的にも使えます。toyがその好例ですね。例えば、次の例を取上げます：hammer：「ハンマー」ですが、動詞になりますと ＊～を釘で打ち込む、～を釘で打ち込んで作品を作る、 考えを叩き込む、という意味合いもあります。＊詳細は辞書を引いて確認ください。nail： 「釘（くぎ）」です。 動詞としては、「モノを釘で打ちつける」⇒（転じて）人やモノを場所に固定する、 と言う意味合いですね 秘密などをすっぱ抜く、という意味もあります。 ＊ Ooka-Echizen nailed theirs lie to the counter. とは、 大岡越前は、証拠を突きつけて、奴らの嘘を暴いた。となります 他にも動詞としての意味が広がります。pan：「平鍋」のことですが、動詞として *鍋で食べ物を煮る *お芝居などを酷評する、という意味合いもあります。 *カメラを上下左右に動かす、という意味合いもあります。tree：言わずと知れた「木」ですが、 動詞としては、１）「ネコや犬などを木に追い上げる」⇒ ⇒「人を窮地に追い込む」という意味合いが出ます。 The ninja treed his enemies into death. 忍者が敵を追い込んで自害させた、toｙ：「おもちゃ」という事ですが、動詞で、 withを伴いますが、 「人をもてあそぶ」との意味合いがあります That handsome guy toys with ladies. あの二枚目は、いつも女性をもてあそんでいる、という風になりますこの様な例はたくさんあります。道具を意味する英語単語（名詞）は、だいたい日本語でカタカナにもなっていますね。ですから、そうしたカタカナ語を生かして、英語の動詞を覚えるのが良いかと思います。ここで、弊所がいいたい事は、英語学習でむやみやたらと単語を覚える方がいますが、通じる英語を学習する場合は、知っている単語を掘り下げる事です。その好例が、上の様に、道具を意味する単語（名詞）を動詞で使える様にする事です。この学習をしていると、英語の発想も捉える事が出来ます。つまり、その各々の名詞について、ネイティブがどの様に捉えているかが判ります。ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。【末次通訳事務所】

受講者の皆様、 お世話になります。映画で出てきます表現の紹介と練習です：ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 不朽の名作とされる『駅馬車』からです：DVDで最初から12分位のシーンです ローズバーグ行きの駅馬車が出発しかけた所、騎兵隊（Cavalry）がやってきて、駅馬車の御者と同乗している保安官(Marshall)に次の様に言います。 ジェロニモが、経路途中の荒野で反乱を始めたのでそれに対する安全上の警告です：（その後、騎兵隊は、護衛で駅馬車の後方から付いて来ます：） ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Lieutenant： But you must warn your passengers that they *travel at their own risk. Marshall: At their own risk? What's the trouble, Lieutenant? *の箇所は、本来は、 you must warn your passengers that they should travel at their own risk.と should が入りますが、口語でカットされています。 will travel でなくて、動詞の原形ですから、shouldが抜けていますね。 at their own risk とは、自分の責任で、という意味合いです。 乗客の皆さんに、自分の責任でこの駅馬車に乗車しなくちゃいけない事をちゃんと伝えて欲しい、という事ですから、「危険な目に遭う可能性がある事を知らせろ！」という事です at their own risk とは、米国の発想ですね自分で責任とらなければならない、仮に、インディアンに襲撃されて死んだり、怪我しても、それを承知で乗車しているから、文句は言えない、という含みです。 lieutenant とは、軍の階級で、中尉や少尉の事を指します。具体的には、この映画でのこの人の階級は、どちらかわかりませんが、中尉（か少尉）です。 travel at their own risk → トレアヴラッゼアロウンリスク と聞こえます。 but you must warn は、バッチュウマスト となります ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。 【Ken's Office】

○攻めと防衛
将棋をしているとよく感じるし、その場面に出くわしますが、中盤の駆け引きにおいて、思い切って敵陣に踏み込んで攻めを敢行する場合は、駆け引きを制し、勝勢になる場合が殆どです。勿論、事前に十分なる読みで、攻めが成功するかどうか判断をした上での話です。中盤の駆け引きの時点で、或いは、多少、相手よりも優勢になった局面で思い切って踏み込んで攻めに出られる場面になるのに、それを too much risk と考えて、防衛を行う手を指すと、流れが相手に傾いて、敗勢を招く事になります。ですので、物事を展開する場合は、ある程度の局面から、思い切って情勢に足を踏み入れて、勝負に出ることが必要で、まだ、防御に手を回す局面ではないのに、防衛に回ると却って勝負を逃します。人生にもいえる事ですね。先日もある局面で、互角でしたが、思い切って角を切って、敵の銀を取り、それを相手玉頭に打ち込んで、必死をかけました。ある程度のリスク(角を手放す）の実際の危険性を読んでいましたが、角を相手に渡しても、自陣にはその角を打ち込まれる場所もなく、何とかいける、との判断で、攻めに出ました。結果的に良かったですね。【Ken's Office】

＜英語＝道具＞
○英語の勉強や練習の意義と目的 ★英語＝道具言葉は、「人と人との意思疎通の道具」です。日本語もしかり、英語もしかり。英語は「道具」に過ぎません。道具はきちんと手入れをして使わないと、さびが生じ、使えなくなります。 英語の学習や練習は、「英語を使う」事を前提にしないとなりません。 新しい単語や表現を覚えて満足して終わり、とかテストに合格する為に、色々な英語表現を覚えて、テストが終ったら忘れてしまう、というのでは、英語を使う事になりません。 英語はテストの為に勉強をするものではありません。あくまでも「使う為に」あります。 私も含めて、英語学習者は、「英語を使う様に」 取り組むべきです。英語を使う、使わざるを得ない環境つくりが出来て、実際に、その環境で英語を使う様に出来る人は、必ず英語の力が向上し、相当に高いレベルになります。 ★英語を使う環境作りとその活用 「英語を使う」事ですが、どんな使い道がありますでしょうか？＊私の商売の様に、通翻訳を行う(有償/無償に拘らず）＊外国人と話して、勉強・練習をする/友好を深める/道案内をする、他＊英語を教える事で、英語を使う、＊外国人の異性の友人を作る、＊日本人同士でも、お互いに英語をしゃべる様にする。 （その場合は、お互いに間違いなどを指摘しあって 相互に向上を諮る様にする）＊外国人留学者のホストファミリーになる、＊英語会話の倶楽部などに加入して、意見を英語で言う様にする・・などなど 上記以外にもたくさん方法はあります。肝心な事は、皆様、各々で、英語を使う方法や環境を作り出して、英語を使えば良いです。英語を使う為に勉強する事が肝要です。 英語学習者によく見られますのは、「英語を習っても使う場所がない」とか「英語を使う環境に恵まれない」という事を言う人です。この様なはいつまでたっても、英語なんて身に付きません。 人間というのは、その気になれば/必死になれば、色々工夫を編み出し、その工夫で、力を伸ばす事が出来ます。英語に付いても、この事が出来る人が、間違いなく英語の達人になる事が出来ます 英語の学習のために、勉強したり、テストのために勉強する事は、本質的には身に付きません。(勿論、テストが近づいて、出題傾向に基いて学習したり、 「出てきそうな単語」などを問題集で学習する事は、 戦術としては、必要ですが、長期の展望戦略にはなり得ません） ＊余談ですが、英語のテストは各種ありますが、 私はあまりそうしたテストに信頼を置いておりません。 英語を使う状況作りについては、http://6630.teacup.com/fuku6340/bbs をご覧下さい。－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－★英語の練習について 英語の練習は、スポーツの練習と同じで、毎日しないとなりません。 ちょっとした量の英語文章でも、英語のセリフでも良いですから毎日それに触れる事が大切です。 末次が、英語の星占いを配信しております理由は此処にあります。毎日英語を見て、意味を理解したり、出てくる表現で自分の事を言ったりする事が、英語を使う為の練習になります。 この講義配信を受信されていらっしゃる方で、英語星占いを受信されていない方に於かれましては配信を受ける様にお勧めします。占いが目的でなくて日々英語に接する事が目的です。 「英語を使う」には、英語で外国人と毎日工夫をして話したりしたら良いですね。ですので、外国人のお友達が居る方や外国人の居住者や観光客が多く居る京都、広島、東京などにお住まいの方は、良い環境に居ます。自分の工夫次第で、どんどん、英語を使って接触をする事です。外国人から、英語を話す機会をtake する場合は、その代わり、相手に何かを give しないとなりません。でないと、外国人にとったらメリットがありません。ですから、日本の文化とか、その地域の情報など、外国人にとって、価値のある情報などを提供したら良いですね。その意味でも、日本の文化を深く知っておかないとなりません。 外国人に接する機会の乏しい方は、創意工夫で、自力で英語を使う様にする事です。出てきた表現を使って、自分の事や自分の家族、自分の一族、会社について、部下について、趣味や好きな音楽などなどなど自分を取り巻く物事を色々な角度からいえる様に練習したら良いですね。そうした事が、英語を使う練習となり、弊所授業でも実施しております事です。独り言でも良いですから、上記の通りにする事が大切です。 英語の達者な方は、皆、不思議な事に、上記の事をしております。無論、私もそうです。 とにかく英語は、使ってこそ、価値がありますし、使う為に勉強や練習をする事です。弊所が展開する講義や課題は、全てそのためにあります。 ですから、パソコンや携帯電話を通しての課題は、毎日、皆様が英語に接触する事がその目的です。従いまして、仲々課題の提出をされないある特定の方は、原則として、破門を余儀なくしないとなりません。 皆様の側にて、各々ご自身で、日々英語を使う工夫をしており実践をしている方は、毎日弊所からの課題をする必要はありません。皆様が独力の工夫で、各々に合った練習を日々実践できれば良いです。 －－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－★英語と日本語★ 仲々分かっていない方が多いのですが、日本語と英語は、まるっきり異質の言葉です。 ですから、日本語の通りに英語を言っても上手く行かない場合の方が多いです。 日本語の内容を英語を使って言う場合は、言いたい内容を煮詰めたり、明確化させることが1つの鉄則です： ★明確化★ （言う事を聞かない作業者に対して）「すみませんが、こちらの言う通りに作業して下さい」という場合、 Excuse me, but please do what you are told (to). とか do what I tell you (to).と言う風に英語でしますが、明確化する方がより英語としては、伝達力が強まります：→Excuse me, but please do exactly what you are told. で良いですね。 言う通りにする、という場合、exactly と補うと、相手に責任を持たせる言い方になりまして、伝達力が強くなります。 伝達力を強くする事は、英語の論理に合致した手法です。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー ★発音について★ 面白い記事をご紹介します ジョン万次郎の英語発音 ジョン万次郎は、英語を憶えた際に耳で聞こえた発音をそのまま発音しており、現在の英語の発音辞書で教えているものとは大きく異なっている。ジョン万次郎が後に記述した英語辞典の発音法の一例を挙げると、「こーる」＝「cool 」・「さんれぃ」＝「Sunday」・「にゅうよぅ」＝「New York 」等、 ★その他の例： midnight メルナイ実際に現在の英米人にジョン万次郎の発音通りに話すと十分意味が通じる（多少早口の英語に聞こえるが、正しい発音に近似している）という実験結果もあり、ジョン万次郎の記した英語辞書の発音法を参考に、日本人にも発音し易い英語として教えている英会話教室もある。私は、ジョン万次郎さんの編んだ辞書を拝見した事がありませんが、英語の音は聞こえるままに、それを再生する様に発音すると良いですね。 -----------------------------------------------------------------ken

明けましておめでとう御座います
2007年1月1日の福岡・飯塚市は、快晴ではありませんが、陽も射して、温かい日になりました。今年も宜しくお引き立て下さいませ。日本人英語学習者の殆ど多くは、英語を勉強、学習していらっしゃいます。 ですが、英語は「使う」ものです。 使う事を前提として、英語を勉強しないとなりません。 英語は使えてナンボです。 英語は道具ですから、洒落た言い方などをしなくとも簡単な言い回しで通じれば、それでよい場合がほとんどです。 英語は、道具です。使えてナンボです。英語は使わないと、勉強する意義は低いです。英語を使う様に、皆様各々にて、そういう状況を作り出したら良いですね。 ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。 有難う御座います。良いお年を。 末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝
