私は、その後の各社報道を読んでいて、気付いたことがある。それは、報道およびこの事件に関する論評が、ことごとく「言論に対する暴力」という主旨であることだ。私は、ちょっと待て、この事件の本質は「言論に対する暴力」なのか？ と疑念が差した。
安倍元首相は、近鉄西大寺駅前で、このたびの参議院選挙候補者の応援演説をしていた。それは確かだ。
しかしながら、現行犯で捕えられた容疑者（犯人と言ってよかろうが）の奈良県警に対する供述というものを、報道で読む限り、ほぼ次のようだ。
犯人は「安倍元首相の信条に恨みはない」と言い、特定宗教団体を名指して、この犯人の母親が入信して多額の金銭をこの団体につぎこみ（寄進？ 献金？ 上納？ 霊感商法により？）、破産し家庭崩壊となった。初めはこの宗教団体の首位者（トップ、と供述しているようだ）を狙ったが、近づけなかった。この宗教団体を安倍元首相が国内でひろめた（毎日新聞の表現。朝日新聞は、「安倍元首相が（この団体と）近い」、と表現）と「思い込み（各社報道による）」・・・手製の銃で狙撃した。
今後、警察は犯行に至る経緯を取り調べるであろうが、上述の「供述」が真実であるならば、私は、この事件の本質は「言論に対する暴力」ではない、と考える。安倍元首相が選挙応援演説中であり、二日後の7月10日（本日）に投票日を控えていたので、如何にも「言論に対する暴力」の相貌を呈しているように見える。犯人は元海上自衛官という経歴もあり、第三者（傍観者）の想像を掻立てるかもしれないが、安倍元首相の「言論」に対する攻撃ではあるまい。事件の本質ではないだろう。
かつて1960年、17歳の右翼少年山口乙矢が、演説中の社会党代議士浅沼稲次郎氏を刺殺した。日本政治史および社会史には言論に対する暴力事件は、多くはないにしろ決してすくなくもない。暴力が実行されないまでも、言論の自由・表現の自由をさまたげる行為は地方行政の主動でむしろ頻繁に起っている。
安倍晋三元首相銃撃殺事件は、今後、日本政治史および日本社会史において特筆されるであろう。私が危ぶむのは、元首相が「言論に対する暴力」で暗殺されたと記録されることだ。
現在、各社報道も評論家だという人も、ほぼことごとくこの事件を「言論に対する暴力」と看做している。しかし、犯人が言っているらしい「安倍元首相に対する恨み」は、安倍氏の「言論」に向けられたものではなさそうだ。犯人にとっての事件の本質は別のところにある。その点は見誤ってはならないだろう。
民主主義を標榜する日本社会にとって、言論に対する暴力は最も忌むべきことであり、危険なことである。しかし、本質を見誤った報道や論評は、言論の自由の自爆装置となりかねない。

frequent, driven by local governments.
The case of the shooting of former PrimeMinister
Shinzo Abe will be noted in the history of Japanese
politics and social history in the future. My concern
is that the former Prime Minister is recorded assassi-
nated in "violence against speech."
Currently, even those who report on each compny
and are critics regard this case as "violence against
speech". However, the "grudge against former Prime
Minister Abe" that the criminal seems to say is not
directed to Mr. Abe's "speech." The essence of the
case for the criminal lies elsewhere. That point
should not be misunderstood.
For the Japanese society advocating democracy,
violence against speech is the most abominable and
dangerous thing. However, reports and commentary
that misunderstand the essence can become a
self-destruct device for free speech.
