Happy Feast
Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, and is usually identified as Nathanael . He was introduced to Christ through St. Philip but was skeptical about the Messiah coming from Nazareth, saying: "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?", but nonetheless, follows Philip's invitation. Jesus immediately characterizes him as "Here is a man in whom there is no deception."
Some scholars hold that Jesus' quote "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you", is based on a Jewish figure of speech referring to studying the Torah. Nathanael recognizes Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the King of Israel".
Nathanael is one of the disciples to whom Jesus appeared at the Sea of Galilee after the Resurrection. It is believed to be true that Saint Bartholomew was skinned alive before he was beheaded, a martyr that is today the patron saint of tanners.
Two ancient testimonies exist about the mission of Saint Bartholomew in India. These are of Eusebius of Caesarea (early 4th century) and of Saint Jerome (late 4th century). Both these refer to this tradition while speaking of the reported visit of Pantaenus to India in the 2nd century.
The studies of Fr A.C Perumalil SJ and Moraes hold that the Bombay region on the Konkan coast, a region which may have been known as the ancient city Kalyan, was the field of Saint Bartholomew's missionary activities.
We in Betalbatim are so fortunate to celebrate the feast of Saint Bartholomew in our parish today. ( actual date is August 24th ).

Betalbatim Beach Cleanliness Drive
Betalbatim PPC, Panchas & Betalbatim Civic & Consumer Forum Activists in Beach Cleanup
On Sunday, more than 50 members of Betalbatim Parish Pastoral Council, newly elected Panchas and Consumer Forum activists, manfully battled for hours to clear the mountains of garbage accumulated in Betalbatim - one of South Goa's most beautiful beaches. This hitherto pristine shore has been left 'looking like a Dharavi' as Forum activist Hillary Cota put it, due to the apathy and defiance of the garbage contractor appointed by the Tourism Department.
Earlier, the Deputy Director Tourism who, at the request of the Betalbatim Civic & Consumer Forum had inspected the beach with her team and seen for herself the state of the beach, had telephonically instructed the contractor in the presence of Forum members,to clear the garbage but to no avail. PPC Executive Committee Member Franklin Fernandes who led the drive affirmed that the villagers would not allow their village to go to the dogs and would take up the issue with the MLA and the Chief Minister. Former Sarpanch Minguel Pereira who participated along with other newly elected panchas, provided gloves, bags and refreshments to the participants.

Sachin Tendulkar always does a pits stop at Martin's Corner when on Goa for his favourite CRAB MASALA FRY, the very fact that Anjali Tendulkar chose to celebrate Sachin's century of centuries speaks it all.

GOA BUDGET 2012-13, hope for agriculture
A new wave of hope has filled the air, the farmer is excited that his hard work has finally found favour with the C.M of the masses. Mr. Manohar Parrikar has promised to frame a new Agricultural policy , so that critical issues like land use, production, management, and employment generation.
The support price for paddy will be raised from Rs 7 per kilogram of paddy to Rs 17 per kilogram. The money will be paid by the government directly into the farmers’ bank accounts. This should bring larger areas under paddy cultivation. “My aim,” says Parrikar, “is to see that Goa becomes self sufficient in basic food items.”
Cashew nuts Rs 90 per kg, arecanut rs 170 per kg
Cashew plantations will benefit by the new support price of Rs 90 per kg of cashew nuts. Cooperative societies will be encouraged to be set up. Kullaghars are a unique symbol of Goa’s agrarian society. These are slowly vanishing. Arecanut plantations form a different ecosystem with intercrops like spices, bananas, vegetables, etc. which are unique to our state. To protect this ecosystem, and to make it an economically viable proposition and assured support price of Rs 170 per kg as against an assured price of Rs 100 per kg at present.
Coconuts Rs 8 per pc, sugarcane Rs 2400 per ton
Coconut farmers will celebrate with a new support price of Rs 8 per coconut. Locally grown fruit and veggies will be given a fixed support price. It will be sold at designated outlets for a fixed rate regardless of whether the market price rises or falls. Sugarcane gets a support price of Rs 500 per ton to assure of sugarcane growth in the state. Now the government will guarantee a support price of Rs 2400 per ton of sugarcane sold by the farmer to the Sanjeevani Sugar Factory in Goa from February 2012. Due to the high cost of inputs, an advance payment of Rs 1000 per ton will be paid to the farmer in September 2012 provided the farmer is a regular supplier of sugarcane to the Sanjeevani Sugar Factory cooperative.
Cash crop centric subsidies
Other local cash crops like cashew, coconut, etc will get a subsidy for cultivation to the extent of 75% of the cost of cultivation. Other subsidies from various Government of India schemes will be adjusted within this 75% subsidy. Groundnut cultivation will get a 100 percent subsidy for the cost of the seed. Rs 40 crore will be kept aside for these measures.
How to recycle plastic pet bottles
With the summer heat already knocking , gallons of bottled drinking water , soft drinks will be guzzled will leaving heaps of pet bottles adding to the ever increasing garbage issue. Village Panchayat Betalbatim in association with Betalbatim civic and consumer forum, under the watchful guidance of Clinton Vaz, has made successful attempts to collect dry waste including plastic from houses that have registered for the same. A number of workshops were conducted to educate and demonstrate how to segregate household garbage and systematic use of 3 potted KAMBHA composter for wet waste.
Betalbatim is probably one of the first if not first villages in Goa that provided a recycling station to its villagers. The illiterate nature of some educated morons have made a mess of the recycling station. There are rumours that adjoining villagers find it quite convenient to fling un-segregated garbage from the comforts of their cars adding to the stink. Maybe it is time we learn from our former rulers ( foreign tourist temporarily residing in Betalbatim carry to the recycle station and dispose off segregated garbage separately) and rag pickers whom we fail to thank when our garbage is collected the traditional way. Some houses which contributed to the door to door scheme instead of helping others to join ,have stopped for reasons best known to them.
Maybe our elders find it difficult to understand the grave nature of garbage issue, but it is the youth of today including those who opt for N.S.S who collect garbage only on garbage collection drives and forget when littering otherwise can make a difference to make the future much cleaner for themselves and the generations to come.
The economics of converting garbage into gold is best understood by those who mess their hands collecting, segregating, processing and recycling it. Read an article in heraldo dated 26th march 2012 to educate yourself

13 more nations to get visas on arrival at Goa Airport
The number of nations whose citizens are eligible for visas on arrival
(VoA) in India is likely to be expanded to include 13 countries largely from Europe, south-east and central Asia
after a review convened by the PMO
felt security conditions need not be a hurdle to promote tourism.
Countries that could be offered VoA include Malaysia , Thailand , Brunei , Spain, France, Germany, Sweden , Russia , Ukraine , Kazakhstan , Brazil and South Africa. At the meeting - also attended by officials from other ministries like culture and environment - it was made clear that security cannot be invoked to strike down important government initiatives.
In a separate, but related review, government is planning a major boost to skill development by aiming to add a eight-crore-strong workforce over the next five years. A big step in this direction could be introducing vocational study as elective options in classes IX to XII so that credits in these subjects can be counted for university admissions.
Home ministry has been asked to work on details of the proposed visa regime in a manner that factors in security concerns by utilizing information-sharing agreements with Asean and the European Union while ensuring that travel to India becomes less hassle-free.
Ramping up tourist numbers is seen as a significant revenue earner with 600,000 foreign visitors a year being a miniscule proportion of global tourism. With timely intervention, the sector can grow much faster than the 24 million jobs currently targeted in the 12th Plan. So far, the VoA scheme has registered modest success with over 10,000 visas issued last year.
At present, 13 countries whose nationals can avail a visa on arrival include Finland , Japan, Luxembourg , New Zealand, Singapore , Cambodia , Indonesia , Vietnam , the Philippines , Laos and Myanmar . But the list excludes more populous nations even in the Asean who can be tapped for a much larger tourist footfall.
Tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahai said, "Government is aware of the urgent need to develop infrastructure to ensure there is adequate connectivity, hotel room availability and facilities for tourists." The government is also drawing lessons from European countries that have leveraged tourism to tide over financial woes.
The government is also considering a spate of measures to kick start its skill-development programme by roughly doubling the targeted addition of skilled persons from existing 40 lakh a year. This is seen as essential, keeping in mind rapidly growing sectors like tourism, information technology and textiles.
The problem of lack of skilled people had caught the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during UPA-I, but despite reports being commissioned and submitted, the issue was never quite addressed. Now, the government has initiated a curriculum evaluation that is intended to introduce vocational study as elective subjects in classes IX to XII.
In a departure from past practice, study of these subjects will count for students keen on attending university as it is felt that if they can earn credits and keep options open, they might be tempted to take up vocational areas in school itself.
On tourism, the PMO has also asked the MHA and the ministry of external affairs to resolve the confusion around restrictions on re-entry of tourists within a 60-day period. The visa rule is likely to be relaxed and a solution reached in the next one month.
Besides increasing VoA facility to four additional airports, including Goa, Hyderabad, Kochi and Bengaluru, the PMO has asked the civil aviation ministry to improve the facilities in the existing airports of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai so that tourists do not have to stand for hours for emigration and other clearances. The ministries of home and civil aviation have also been asked to increase counters and accept immigration fees in both Indian currency and dollars.
