Veliard farmers in Betalbatim use transplanter

Goa has always welcomed the rains when greenery spreads a carpet of vegetation . The farmer gets busy in mid May to prepare the soil for the paddy crop. As years have gone by, no availability  of labour or high cost of labour has forced many farmers leave their fields uncultivated .

But there those few who always like to fight the odds and come what may, find ways and means to tackle the situation. Something similar happened on 15th June 2016. Hilarinho Cota, Joe Cota, Anita d Cruz, Jimmy Cota , Damazino Cota along with  Fr. George  (Don bosco priest from Loutolim ) created history by boldly implementing the modern technology .

The fields were ploughed ahead of time and a mechanised rise transplanter was used thereby minimising dependance on labour for manually transplanting by 80%.

Hillary Cota has procured a tractor and has been pressed into service in the VELARD FIELDS . Many farmers who had to register at agriculture dept to get their fields ploughed and wait for a tractor have service around the corner.

Rice fields near sunset beach, Betalbatim.

Rice fields near sunset beach, Betalbatim provide a view of lush green carpet , which is so sooting to eyes. It is quite welcoming to note that farming is catching up in Betalbatim and more people are cultivating rice fields .

The sand dunes have till date kept the sea at bay and hopefully will defend the the otherwise helpless farmers from the wrath of nature.
