"KUD",Club of Betalbatim in Mumbai gets painted

There news to cheer as the Club of Betalbatim Villagers in Mumbai gets a fresh coat of paint in time for Christmas.

Under the able leadership of Mr. Nelson Alfonso the manager of the Club this was planned in 2017. Mr. Mariano Rodrigues and Mr Wilbur Cota together worked under the guidance of Mr. Nelson Alfonso to get the outer area painted.

Club of Betalbatim Villagers in Mumbai was founded in the year 1845 .Our club('kud', as it is known in Konkani) is a residential accommodation for the catholic residents of Betalbatim. It's situated in Mazgaon, Mumbai. Generous contribution have helped in this painting. 

If more generous donors come forward and contribute, the renovation of  the club including family rooms will be possible.The  members can get their families and stay in Mumbai at a nominal price. The Club officials are hoping to that the remaining renovation work will be done once people come forward to donate. 

Those who wish to contribute for this Club renovation may contact Mr. Joe Cota in Goa or Mr. Nelson Alfonso in Mumbai. Donations can be also directly transferred to the Club bank account.

Martins Corner gets their own organic vegetable garden

Mrs. Carafina Pereira, proprietor of Martins Corner has added an organic vegetable garden to source out fresh vegetables to her kitchen at Martins Corner. Mrs. Carafina, over the years has nurtured Martins Corner into a famous restaurant. Celebrities from all over the world and India have visited this restaurant and list still adds up.  



Mrs. Carafina has taken personal interest to grow vegetables to ensure a chemical-free  harvest for her kitchen at Martins Corner. The visit to the vegetable garden was quite a field trip for me, to see how meticulously the whole layout has been planned . The variety includes tomatoes,green chillies,cluster beans, brinjals, bottle gourd, drumsticks, ambado, papaya..pineapples.

Club of Betalbatim Villagers in Mumbai

Club of Betalbatim Villagers in Mumbai was founded in the year 1845 .Our club('kud', as it is known in Konkani) is a residential accommodation for the catholic residents of Betalbatim. It's situated in Mazgaon, Mumbai.
This structure has been providing accommodation for young boys who travel to Mumbai in search of gainful employment on the ship and abroad. Time has come to do repairs of the club so it can provide shelter for the generations to come.

The club has four rooms and has a common toilet house outside. The plans of repairs and renovation include.

  • Flooring and tiling of all the four rooms.
  • Complete new electrical rewiring .
  • Construct toilet , bathroom inside.
The total expense has been roughly estimated to be around 4.5 lakhs. This is a humble request to the villagers to willingly contribute for this cause. Those who wish to contribute for this Club renovation may contact Mr. Joe Cota in Goa or Mr. Nelson Alfonso in Mumbai. Donations can be also directly transferred to the Club bank account.

St. Bartolomeuachi Porob


The Parish of Betalbatim celebrates the feast of Saint Bartholomew today on 28th August 2016. This is one of the main two feast the Church celebrates , the other being feast of Our Lady of Remedios in the month of January. Nine LED TVs have been installed by the Church to help the congregation participate better in the Mass. This was possible due to the kind help by some generous parishioners. It is hoped that the mass will be more vibrant since the hymns get displayed on the LED TVs.

According to the Synaxarium of the Coptic Orthodox Church, his  martyrdom  is commemorated on the first day of the Coptic Calendar (i.e. the first day of the month of Thout), which currently falls on September 11 (corresponding to August 29 in the Julian Calendar). His feast is June 11 in Eastern Christianity and August 24 in the  Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod ,  Anglican Communion  and both forms of the  Roman Rite  of the Catholic Church.

Winners of All-Goa Carol Singing Contest 2015

St. Michael’s Choir, Orlim bagged the 1 st Prize in the Open Category at the All-Goa Carol Singing Contest organized by Betalbatim Cricket Club at Betalbatim on 18 th December 2015. Fr. Agnel Higher Secondary, Verna were the Runners-up while Club Acoustica of Chowgule College, Margao won the 3 rd spot. 
In the School’s Category, St. Xavier’s High School, Macazana were the Winners. King’s School, S. Jose de Areal took the 2 nd Place while Sacred Heart High School, Carmona won the 3 rd Prize.

Chief Guest Viola Pacheco, congratulated the winners and Betalbatim Cricket Club for organizing the contest excellently every year. She also had a word of praise for parents and teachers of the participants. Parish Priest Fr. Pascoal Afonso presided and along with Guest of Honour  Fr. Milagres Fernandes gave  away the prizes with the Chief Guest. Mr. Arlindo de Miranda and Mr. Alvaro Pereira were the judges while Mrs. Cheryl Athaide Lobo Cota proposed the vote of thanks.

Annual Sports at St. Jude's High School, Betalbatim


St. Jude's High School, Betalbatim organised their annual sports on 5th Dec. 2015. Chief Guest of the function was Bruno Pereira ( ex-teacher of St. judes high school) and son of the soil. Guest of honour was Mr. Reginaldo Diniz yet another ( ex-teacher of St. judes high school) and son of the soil. A colourful display of various programs kept the crowd entertained .   
Students look smart in their uniform and shocks and shoes. Dressed according to their house colours, the bright sun light up the reds,blues,greens and yellows as the the students marched and displayed their  skills.

A normal child would be accompanied by a parent to the nearest shoe shop and after trying out the best shoes that fits the leg, it would be bought. The e-commerce era has brought about a revolution , where you can shop from the comforts of your house and with smart phones making accessing net even easy. Now a days  popular shoes are picked online   and you can even save a lot as most of shoes bought online have discounted rates.

Felicitation of S.S.C E toppers by Parish Pastoral Council


The newly appointed Parish Pastoral Council felicitated Miss Micky Devi and Miss Venice Coelho on sunday 5th July 2015. Parish Priest Fr. Pascoal Afonso, Asstt. Parish Priest Fr. Milagres Pereira, Mr. Avertano Barreto( Moderator), Mrs. Sucorina Pereira(vice- Moderator), Mrs. Maria Pereira ( Secretary), Mr. Samson Cota( Jt. Secretary), Mr. Cesar Afonso( Treasurer)

Miss Micky Devi topped with 83.33% closely followed by Miss Venice Coelho scoring 78.71%. Both the students of St. Jude's High School . Betalbatim were felicitated by Parish Priest Fr. Pascoal Afonso in the presence of Asstt. Parish Priest Fr. Milagres Pereira.


The Parochial school attached to Our Lady of Remedios Church has achieved 95% result in the S.S.C .E board examinations for the academic year 2014-2015. 37 students appeared for the S.S.C .E board examinations ,  out of them two secured distinction ,  10 students first class,  10 students second class  and 15 students pass class.

St. Jude's High School Hall

St. Jude's High School will have its own hall to conduct their extra curricular activities indoors particularly during monsoon season. This initiative taken by some far sighted members of Parish needs to be commended. Many villagers have generously donated towards this cause and some shows including dramas have been organised to generate funds for the quick completion of this project before the monsoon.

Cielda Pereira , Voice of Betalbatim

Cielda Pereira, a budding star that has bloomed in the garden of Betalbatim. Once a sleepy little village that has given Goa , quite a bunch of talent musicians, sportsmen, tiatrists has in recent times churned out talent of the new generation. It was quite evident at the recently held competition " Voice of Betalbatim ", that in years to come villagers in Betalbatim will be witnessing a change for the good in the field of music.

Cielda Pereira, the "VOICE OF BETALBATIM" has come a long way under the watchful guidance of her mother Mrs. Joanita Pereira , who herself with her melodious voice is a renowned singer in the church choir. As a  cheerful and humble youth Cielda has her own bunch of fans across ages who listen to her with awe whenever she steps on the stage much to the delight of the crowd. Some of the accomplishments that Cielda has achieved in recent times are:

Betalbatim Beach Cleanliness Drive


Betalbatim PPC, Panchas & Betalbatim Civic & Consumer Forum Activists in Beach Cleanup

On Sunday, more than 50 members of Betalbatim Parish Pastoral Council, newly elected Panchas and Consumer Forum activists, manfully battled for hours to clear the mountains of garbage accumulated in Betalbatim - one of South Goa's most beautiful beaches. This hitherto pristine shore has been left 'looking like a Dharavi' as Forum activist Hillary Cota put it, due to the apathy and defiance of the garbage contractor appointed by the Tourism Department. 





Earlier, the Deputy Director Tourism who, at the request of the Betalbatim Civic & Consumer Forum had inspected the beach with her team and seen for herself the state of the beach,had telephonically instructed the contractor in the presence of Forum members,to clear the garbage but to no avail. PPC Executive Committee Member Franklin Fernandes who led the drive affirmed that the villagers would not allow their village to go to the dogs and would take up the issue with the MLA and the Chief Minister. Former Sarpanch Minguel Pereira who participated along with other newly elected panchas, provided gloves, bags and refreshments to the participants.

Judge Desmond D'Costa reinstated

Judge Desmond D'Costa, proud son of Mr. Anthony & Mrs. Bertha D'Costa originally from Betalbatim has been reinstated after 15 long months. The battle needs to be further taken to next level to press for a separate HIGH COURT FOR GOA

St.Judes High School ,Betalbatim defeats Manovikas English Medium High School, Margao

The Salcete Taluka U-14 inter-school football tournament will come to an end as St.Judes High School, Betalbatim take on Mae dos Pobres High School , Nuvem. The inter-school tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs saw both the semi-finals being decided via a tie-breaker.

St.Judes High School, Betalbatim fought back after being 0-2 to sail into the finals after valiant efforts of Princeton Rebello and Shelton D'silva during the second half and Nanu,Klusner and shelton sealed the fate of Manovikas English Medium High School, Margao.

Rice fields near sunset beach, Betalbatim.

Rice fields near sunset beach, Betalbatim provide a view of lush green carpet , which is so sooting to eyes. It is quite welcoming to note that farming is catching up in Betalbatim and more people are cultivating rice fields . 



The sand dunes have till date kept the sea at bay and hopefully will defend the the otherwise helpless farmers from the wrath of nature.
