Ai Fukuhara, one of the top table tennis players in Japan, will take Waseda University's special "top athlete" entrance exam, sources said.
Fukuhara, 17, now a student at Aomori Yamada High School, represented Japan at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
Waseda University's Faculty of Sports Sciences began its top athlete programin a bid toattract world-class athletes who have taken part in major events such as the Olympics.
The first stage of screening has already finished for this year's intake and, after interviews, the results will be announced on Sept. 13.
If accepted by Waseda, Fukuhara will continue training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics while studying at the same time.
Last year, two top-level high school swimmers were accepted onto the program. (Mainichi)
