I read a story about Mahatma Gandhi today. He is well known for "Nonviolent resistance." When the violence between Hindus and Muslims got worse in 1924, Gandhi started to fast. "I will eat again when the violence stops. Not before," he said. On 21st day of the fast, Hindu and Muslim leaders came to him and told him that , for his sake, they ~~won't~~ wouldn't fight each other ~~for the sake of Gandhi~~ . What kind of person can stop ~~any~~ fighting s by his/her fast ing ? If the person isn't loved deeply by people, he/she would be probably be ignored. People in India loved him so much because of what he had done and what he tried to do. He wanted five things at that time: no violence between Hindus and Muslims; the same rights for Untouchables as for other Hindus; Indians in Indian clothes; the same rights for women as for men; independence for India from British rule.

The correction in blue above was just for clarity. I can imagine a native English speaker writing it like you did, but to the reader it sounds a little like they were fighting each other BECAUSE of Ghandi.
⇒for the sake of「～のために」の場所が悪くて、ガンディのせいで争っていたように読めるので、場所を変えたほうがいいということだそうです。なるほど、言われてみればそうですね～。
