新実徳英の新作初演が楽しみだ
昨夜眠る前に、買ったばかりの日本語の本を、ベッドで最後まで読み終わった。 朝、従姉から電話があった。1年ぶりだろうか。いや、もっとかもしれない。秋深くなったら私の弟たちも交えて会おうというのである。「いいね、会おう，会おう」 あいかわらず一日中絵を描いていた。 作曲家の新実徳英さんからメールを頂戴し、そのメールで、今週末に新作初演される合唱劇「二つの愛の物語 ー あずさ弓・筒井づつ ー 」について次のように述べていた。 「この度の合唱劇は、純器楽の音世界の追求とは異なり、伊勢物語の極めて人間的な、それゆえ現代に真っ直ぐにつながるテキストをどのように音楽化合唱化するかが課題でした。」 私は常に驚きをもって新実徳英の創りだす音楽に長年接して来たが、またまた私の感覚に強烈なパンチを喰らわせて、くらくらと幸せな天国行きを味わわせてくれるに違いない。楽しみである。 I finished reading the Japanese book just bought in bed before sleeping last night. ポスターの試作をクリニックへ
昼前にポスターの試作を持ってクリニックへ行く。クリニックからそのまま遠出をして書店へ行き、英書2冊と他に日本語の本を1冊購入。 帰宅すると、即座に作品制作にとりかかるにはエネルギーの不足を感じた。やっぱり歳である。しかたがないので買ったばかりの日本語の251ページの本を64ページまで読み、その後ようやく制作にとりかかった。 Go to the Yamanoue Medical Clinic with a prototypeposter for my art lecture befor noon. Going out of the clinic and I was going to a bookstore, purchasing two English books and one other Japanese book. When I got home, I felt there was a shortage of energy to start painting work immediately. I'm afterall old. So I read up 64 pages of a 251-page book Ijust bought, and then I started painting.

少しずつ涼しくなって
少しずつ涼しくなってきている。まだ冷房しているけれど、弱風でちょうど良いくらいだ。 さて、きょうも一日中絵の制作。さきほど20時、一区切りついたところで道具を片付けた。昼食後の1時間ほど使って、10月に予定している医療クリニックでおこなう第7回目（通算13、14回目）の美術講義のためのポスターをデザインした。明日にでも打ち合わせに行って来よう。 It's getting cooler little by little. It7s still air-condi-tioned, but it's just fine with a weak wind. Well, today I am also working on painting all day.At 20 o'clock, the tools were cleard after a break.About an hour after lunch, I designed a poster forthe 7th (the total 13th and 14th) art lectures at theMinamidaira Yamanoue Clinic (a medical clinic) scheduled for October. I will go to the meeting fotit tomorrow.

とにかく私は描く
きょうもまた民生委員として市から依頼があった2件の訪問仕事を午前中に終わらせ、午後から絵の制作に取りかかった。 とにかく私は描く。大上段に構えることなく、しかし民間外交をとぎらせないためにも。 Today, I also visited two elderly persons that re-quested by the city hall as a local welfare comms-sioner in the morning, and started oainting in the afternoon. 作品制作，捗る
昼食後から午後6時まで作品制作。かなり進んだ。残り2週間ほどで完成しそうだ。 夜になって民生委員としての仕事が2件、他に独居高齢者の見守りが1件あり、1時間ばかり外出。 I was painting from after lunch until 6 pm. It has ad-vanced a lot. It looks like it will be completed in about 2 weeks. At night, there were 2 jobs as a local welfare commis-sioner, and also in another case I had to go to gaze in-directly an elderly person iving alone.

短い夏休みが終わった
私の短い夏休みが終わった。夕方から合唱団「かしの木」の練習。そして明日からまた作品制作にとりかかる。それ以外の仕事のスケジュールもこなしてゆかなければならないので、忙しい毎日が待っている。 My short summer vacation is over. Practice the choir"Kashi-no-ki" from the evenibg. And tomorrow I will start working on the painting again. I also have to workon other work schedules, so I'll be busy every day.

ささやかな夏休み
ささやかな夏休みをとっている。何もしない。ワークホリック気味の私には日中何もしないで過ごすのはいささか苦痛だが、あえて何もしない。就寝前にベッドのなかで眠くなるまで本を読んでいる。これだけは習慣になっていて、ほとんど欠かしたことがないのだ。 おや，夜の9時、雷鳴とともに突然激しい雨が降り出した。これで少し気温が下がるといいのだが。 I have a modesut summer vacation, do nothing. It's abit painful for me without doing abything during theday, but I dare not do anything. I read books until I fallasleep in bed. This is just a habit, and it's almost never missed. Oh, at 9 o'clock in the night, sudden hevy rain beganto fall with thunder. I hope the temperature will drop alittle.

異常気象と「かろうじて」
昨日のこと、蜩（ひぐらし）がカナカナと鳴いて、なにかしら儚げだったので、「ほら、蜩が鳴いている」と家人に言った。もう秋なのだ、と思いながら。 ところが今日は相変わらずの猛暑。昼には35℃を超し、19時になってもまだ31℃である。どうやら猛暑はまだまだつづくようである。 世界各地で異常気象が報じられている。南半球のオーストラリアは寒冷に襲われ、9℃もあれば温かく感じるほどだとか。 先日も引き合いに出したソーントン・ワイルダーの戯曲集に『The Skin of Our Teeth (かろうじて）』という奇妙な作品が収められている。ニュージャージーが舞台というのだが、氷河期に入ったような異常気象がつづいてい、食糧は入手困難、燃料も底をついた。 主人公アントロバス氏は発明家で、車輪だかハンドルだかを考案し、またアルファベットの研究をしている。家には恐竜ディノサウルスとマンモスがいる。ペットなのか寒さのためにこの家に居候しているのか、「寒いよ〜」と言って震えているのだ。食糧に困窮している奥さんにおかまいなしに、さまざまな人を客として迎えて「食事をだしてやれ！」とわめきたて、暖炉の燃料として観客席の椅子を舞台にあげてくれと要求する。---第二幕は、それから5000年後。主人公の発明家夫妻は町の名士になっていて、結婚5000年記念を祝ってもらって---- この奇妙な演劇。初演は1942年。10月15日にコネチカット州ニューヘイヴンのシューベルト劇場で幕を開け、11月18日にニューヨークのプリマス劇場で演じられている。驚くのは演出がエリア・カザン、出演者はタルラ・バンクヘッド、フレドリック・マーチ、フロレンス・エルドリジ、モンゴメリー・クリフト、フランセス・ヘフリン、フロレンス・リード。 さらにロンドンのフェニックス劇場公演では、演出がサー・ローレンス・オリヴィエ、出演者はヴィヴィアン・リー、セシル・パーカー、ジョーン・ヤング。 ローレンス・オリヴィエは、1948年のオーストラリアとニュージャージーの公演で、発明家アントロバス氏を演じている。 まるでオール・スター芝居ではないか！ 初演が第二次世界大戦の最中なので、戦時下の社会状況を象徴的に描いているのだと言えるかもしれない。恐竜ディノサウルスやマンモスが家の中にいるというのも参戦国の関係性を示唆しているのかもしれない。 作品タイトルになっている "the skin of our teeth" は、そのまま日本語にすると「われわれの歯の皮」となり、何のことやら判らない。実は熟語である。「かろうじて」という意味である。 この戯曲が日本で上演されたことがあるのかどうか、私は知らない。日本語に訳して上演したところで、作者ソーントン・ワイルダーの意図を表現できるかどうか。スラップスティック（どたばたコメディー）で終わってしまうかもしれない。---いや、私がこの戯曲をここに述べたのは、地球の異常気象をつくりだす原因と考えられる我々人間社会の有様を予言的に表現しているかもしれないと思ったからである。もちろん、第二次大戦下とは異なるもっと人類破滅形の戦争状況が、今まさに形成されつつあるのだというヴィジョンを踏まえるなら、おそるべき予言的な戯曲と言えよう。ただし、我々現代人は、「かろうじて」などと言って5000年間を生き延びられないかもしれない。 Yesterday, a Higurashi(cicada) was chirping, and I felt it transitory, while thinking that it's already fall. However, it was still hot today. It exceeds 35 ℃ at noon and is still 31 ℃ even at 19:00. Apparently, theintense heat seems to continue. A strange work called "The Skin of Our Teeth" isincluded inthe collection of Thornton Wildet's drama,which I mentioned the book the other day. The stage is New Jersey, but the extreme weather like the ice age has continued, food is difficult to obtain, and fuel hasrun out. The main character, Mr. Antrobus, is an inventor,who devised whether it was a wheel or a hadle, andalso studied the alphabet. There are a Dinosaur anda Mammoth in his house. Whether they are pets or are kiving in this house because of the cold, theyare shivering saying "It's cold~". Without worryingabout his wife who is in need of food, he welcomesvarious people as guests and screams, "Dine to them!". And ask for the chairs in the audience seats to be used as fuel for the fireplace....The second act is 5000 years later. Mr. and Mrs. Antrobus have become famous fig-ures in town, and they celebrated the 5000th anniver-sary of their marriage.... This strange play, the premiere was 1942. It be-gan at the Schubert Theater in New Haven, Con-necticut on 15 October and was performed at thePlymouth Theater in New York on 18 November. The surprise was directed by Elia Kazan, and the performers were Tallulah Bankhead, Fredric March, Florence Eldridge, Montgomery Clift, Frances Heflin, and Florence Reed. In addition, at the Phoenix Theater performance in London, the director was Sir Lawrence Olivier, and the performers were Vivien Leigh, Cecil Parker and Joan Young. It's like an all-star play! Since the oremiere wasin the middle of World War II, it may be said that it symbolizes the social situation during the war. The fact that the Dinosaur and the Mammoth are in the house may also indicate the rela-tionship between the participating countries in thewar. The title of the play " the skin of our teeth"is an idiom. It means "barely". I don't know if this drama has been performed in Japan. Is it possible to express the intention of the author Thornton Wilder when translated into Japanese? It might end up with a slapstick....No, I am writing about this drama here because I thought it might be a prophetic expression of state of our human society, which is thought to be the cause of the Earth's abnormal weather. Of course, the vision is that a more human-developed war situation that is different from that under World War II is now being formed. 台風10号がお盆直撃
台風10号がお盆直撃と報道。西日本に向かっている大型台風というので、大きな被害が心配である。 我町は、昨夜突然激しい雨音で降り出した。私はすでに眠っていたのだが、やおら起きて家の戸締まりを確認した。その激しさはすぐにおさまり、今日も小雨が降ったり止んだりである。午後3時には気温31℃を越したので、いかにも鬱陶しい。 昼過ぎに山坂町の急坂を走って何度か昇り降りしなければならない出来事があった。暑さでぶったおれそうになったが、しかしまあ、私は元気な爺ちゃんではある。帰宅してから、水をグラスで3杯つづけざまに飲んだ。どっと汗が吹き出した。 庭の柿が直径4cmほどまでになったが、どうしたことか毎日ボトボトともう200個以上落ちた。鳥が啄んで落しているのではない。自然落下である。 一方で、土佐文旦が異例の豊作だ。自然の摂理は、私には判らない。 Weather forecast says tyhoon No. 10 hits Obon direc-tly. It is a large tyhoon heading to western Japan, I amworried about serious damage. Our town suddenly started raining heavy rain last night. I was already asleep, but I got up and confirmedthe door was shut. The intensity of this suddenly sub-sided, and it is raining or stopping today. At 3 pm, thetemperature exceeded 31 ℃, so it was very annoying. After noon, there was an event that I had to run upand down sevral times on a steep slope in the town.I was drenched by the heat, but I'm really cheerful old man. When I got home, I drank three glasses of water. I suddenly sweated. Persimmons of my garden became about 4cm indiameter, but what happened fell every day and fallen persimmons were already more than 200. Birds are not drowning. It is a natural fall. On the other hand, a tosa-buntan tree is an excep-tional rich harvest. I don't know about nature'sprovidence.

太陽探査宇宙船が地球を発って丁度1年
昨年8月12日にNASAの太陽探査宇宙船「パーカー・ソーラー・プローブ」が地球を発って、丁度1年になる。 1958年にユージン・パーカー博士が太陽風の存在について論文を発表した。博士は現在も御健在である。NASAによる人類初の太陽探査プロジェクト「パーカー・ソーラー・プローブ」は博士の功績を讃えて命名された。ヴィデオによれば、探査宇宙船を積んだロケット・ローンチを博士も現地でご覧になっていらした。 私はこのプロジェクトのキャンペーンに参加し、私の名前を探査船に積み込んだメモリー・カードに記載してもらうことができた。 私の名前は人類初の太陽探査宇宙船に乗って、現在、太陽に近づいている。この宇宙船は、太陽と地球との間が1ヤード（約91.4cm)と換算して太陽に10cmほどまで接近する。 探査宇宙船は燃えてしまわないか？ ---燃えないのだ。もちろん探査宇宙船は非常な高温を経験することになるのであるが、燃えない理屈は簡単な物理学で証明できる。「温度」とは、どういうことかということだ。それは粒子の移動速度（エネルギー）なのだ。粒子がまばらな状態で移動している空間ならば「温度」は低い。地球の成層圏内のようにあらゆる原子の粒子がぎゅうぎゅう詰めの稠密な空間では、「温度」は高くなる。粗雑な説明だが、理屈はそういうことである。 もちろん探査宇宙船は非常な高温に耐えるよう、ジョン・ホプキンズ大学の物理学研究所が創りだした二重構造炭素でおおわれ、それでおおうことができない宇宙船から突き出たアンテナは、地球上で最も融解温度が高いタングステンやサファイアで造られている。 地球はこの1年間に太陽の周りを1回廻ったわけだが、「パーカー・ソーラー・プローブ」はすでに太陽の近くを2回通過し、3番目の軌道に到達した。間もなく9月1日に、さらに太陽に接近する。現在、探査宇宙船は加速中である。 探査宇宙船には、データ収集のための科学機械が4つ積み込まれている。これらによって、粒子、太陽風プラズマ、電場、磁場、太陽電波放射、コロナの構造（太陽の高温の外気）のデータを収集する。宇宙船は太陽に2回接近したことにより、通過時のデータを地球に送ってきている。つまり地球から送った信号を宇宙船がキャッチし、再び地球に送り返してきたわけである。 今後、太陽外気であるコロナの温度が太陽表面温度より極端に高くなるのは何故かという物理学の解明、そして太陽系に粒子とプラズマを追い出すメカニズムの解明に、貴重なデータを送信してくることが期待されているのである。 Last August 12th, NASA's solar exploration space-craft "Parker Solar Prove" leaves the Earth, and it isexactly one year. Of course, the exploration spacecraft will ex-perience very high temperatures, but the theory ofnot burning can be proved by simple physics. "Temperature" is what it means. That is the veloc-ity (energy) of the particles. If the space is aparse,yhe "temperature" is low. In a dense space filledwith particles of all atoms, like the Earth's stratos-phere, the "temperature" rises. That's rough expla-nation, but that's the reason. Of course, yhe spacecraft is covered with double-structured carbon created by John Hopkins Univer-sity's physics laboratory to withstand extreamelyhigh temperatures, and the antenna protrudingfrom the spacecraft that cannot be covered is made of tungsten or sapphire, which has the mosthigh melting point on the Earth. The Earth has traveled around the sun once in the past year, but the Parker Solar Probe has already passed twice near the sun and reached its third orbit. Soon it will be closer to the sun onSeptember 1st. Currently, exploration spacecraftis accelerating. The exploration spacecraft is loded with fourscientific machines for data collection. Withthese, data of particles, solar wind plasma, electric field, magnetic field, solar radio waveradiation, corona structure(hig temperature out-side of the sun) is collected. The spacecraft is sending data to the Earth as it oasses by ap-proching the sun twice. In the future, valuable data will be sent to elu-cidate the physics of why the temperature of the corona, which is the sun's outside air, is ex-tremely higher than the solar surface temper-ature, and to elucidate the mechanism for expel-ling particles and plasma into the solar system.It is expected. 合唱団樹の会「新実徳英の合唱世界」案内
合唱団樹の会が主催する合唱音楽の夕べ『新実徳英の合唱世界 Ⅱ』の案内状を頂戴した。 プログラムは混声合唱曲集「三つの愛の歌」から「Ⅰ. 寄り寝し妹を」「Ⅱ. Thy mouth like the best wine」「Ⅲ. Suavies canutas」、そして合唱劇『二つの愛の物語 ― あずさ弓・筒井づつ ー』（「伊勢物語」による台本・和合亮一）。 8月31日（土）、東京・渋谷区文化総合センター大和田 さくらホール。 合唱団樹の会のすばらしさを、私はこのシリーズの第1回目（2016年11月）で驚嘆しながら知った。響きの美しさ、混声のバランスの良さ。そして何より高度な音楽性に到達する解釈力・表現力の圧倒的な魅力。同会音楽監督は藤井宏樹。 音楽演奏について語る英語表現に必ず使われる「interpretation」とか「interpreter」という言葉がある。すなわち言葉の意味は「解釈」「解釈者」だが、「player」に代わる「演奏者」という意味で使われる。どうしてこんな言葉がしきりに使われるかというと、演奏とは解釈に他ならないからである。つまり作曲者は演奏されてはじめて作品が実現するのであって、しかもその芸術的な成果はひとえに演奏者の解釈にかかっていると言ってもよかろう。 私は前回の新実さんの混声合唱とピアノのための『黙礼スル 第一部・第二部』（和合亮一・詩）を聴きながら、新実さんは樹の会に演奏してもらって本当に幸せを感じているのではないかしらん、と思ったものだ。この作品は連続演奏時間40数分。そのことを別にしても、そう易々と演奏できるものではないし（ないと思うし）、いわんやその演奏が芸術的な高みに到達するためには、混声合唱団はあまたあろうけれど、interpreterとしてはよほどの技量を必要とするだろう。 合唱曲や歌曲作品は演奏技量など問わずに誰にでもあまねく歌われることも、作曲者・作詞者にとっては幸せであろう。それこそが芸術的な成果だとも言えるのである。しかし、だれもが経験したことがないような美的な光が、interpreterによって普遍性を獲得するという一面もあるのではあるまいか。 合唱団樹の会から届いた案内には、招待状も添えられていた。私はありがたくお受けし、私自身の多忙なスケジュールをなんとかして伺おう。楽しみである。

74年目の長崎原爆の日に
長崎原爆の日に、私は182,601人の犠牲死者を慰霊いたします。 私は広島の原爆犠牲死者を悼む作品を制作し、昨年、ニューヨークで発表した。つづいて長崎の原爆犠牲死者を慰霊する作品を制作しようと構想を練って来たが、いまだに実作に取りかかれないでいる。私自身の残された命数をかぞえながら、心はあせるばかりである。 昨日の日記で触れたソーントン・ワイルダー『OUR TOWN』に次のような進行役のセリフがある。 「You know as well as I do that the dead don't stay interested in us living people for very long. Gradually, gradually, they lose hold of the earth ---and the ambitious they had---and the pleas- ures they had---and the things they suffered--- and the people they loved.」 （私がそうであるように、死者も長い時がたてば生きてい る私たちへの関心がなくなるものです。だんだんに、だ んだんに、死者たちはこの地をつかんでいる手を離し、 ---彼らが持っていた野心や---楽しみや---苦しんだ ことがらや---愛した人たちを失うのです。」 （山田訳） 世界はまさに今、核兵器禁止条約---人類が長年艱難辛苦の末に辿り着いたせめてもの智慧の扉---を無惨にも破壊しようとしている。野蛮への堕落を欣喜雀躍する放埒な人間たちだ。300万人の日本国民を死に追いやった僅か74年前の戦争を忘れて、虚無と死に憑かれている自らの精神のふるまいを、国政において享楽しようとしている。 ソーントン・ワイルダー『私たちの町』の進行役のセリフは、一般生活者の日常的な生死観においては真実であるが、しかし、人類や地球規模の社会を視野におさめるならば決して忘れてはならない死があるのである。それは、人類の破滅を具体的にイメージする広島原爆犠牲死と長崎原爆犠牲死である。 On the 74th anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bomb, I will worship 182,601 victims of death. They are profligacy people who are delighted to fall into sav-agery. Forgetting the war just 74 years ago that drove 3 million Japanese citizens to death, they are trying to enjoy the behavior of their own spirit, which is struck with emptiness and death(thanatos), in national politics. The facilitator lines of Thorton Wilder's "OUR TOWN" are true in everyday life and death. However, there is a death that should never be forgotten if we consider humanity and global society. They are the Hiroshima atomic bomb victim and Nagasaki atomic bomb victim that specifically image the destruction of mankind.By Tadami Yamada

自転車で遠出して見つけた本
私のメモによれば7月30日の梅雨明けから今日まで連日9日間の猛暑である。私の処では今日も昼前に35℃を記録した。 しかし家のなかに閉じこもってばかりもいられず、運動を兼ねて自転車で遠出をした。途中で古書店（貴重書を扱うような本当の意味での古書店ではない）に寄り、2冊購入。俳優座劇場編『伊藤熹朔 ー 舞台美術の巨人』（NHK出版刊）と英書ダン・ブラウン『DIGITAL FORTRESS (ディジタル要塞）』。 私は故伊藤熹朔氏の舞台美術による演劇を実際に幾つも観ていた。これに氏の映画美術を加えるとはたしてどれほどのかずになるだろう。それほどたくさん私は伊藤熹朔氏の舞台美術を観て来たのである。 じつは現在ベッドに入ってから眠くなるまで読んでいるのは、---すでに何度も読み返してきているのだが、---ソーントン・ワイルダーの戯曲集。この中の一編、『OUR TOWN (私たちの町）』は、1901年から1913年(最終場面は1899年）までのアメリカのニューハンプシャーのグロヴァーズ・コーナーズという小さな町の普通の人たちの何と言うこともない日常を描いている。何と言うこともないのではあるが、若者の恋の芽生えがあり、結婚があり、出産があり、市民戦争での死があり、最後はみな死者となり死者として語るのである。 ---この舞台美術は、テーブルと椅子のほかは何も無い。幕もない。小道具もない。舞台には終始「ステージ・マネージャー」役がいて、あすこに山がある、あすこに何何宗の教会がある、ここは誰それさんの食堂だ等々言い、観客の想像力を喚起するのである。俳優たちはパントマイムで朝食を摂り、コーヒーを飲み、またミルク・マンはパントマイムでミルク配達の馬車を曵く。むろん馬も見えない。ベッシーと名付けられた馬を、俳優はあたかもそこに馬がいるかのように語りかけ、舞台を出入りする。最終場面の共同墓地は、観客に向かって舞台上に椅子が並べられ---つまり、それが墓であり、俳優たちは死者としてその椅子に座っているのである。 私は読みながら、これは俳優によほどの技量がなければ演劇として成立しないだろうなー、と思いながら、しかし私は身の程もわきまえずに演出をしてみたいなーと、創作的なエネルギーがむずむずと身体内部にわきあがるのである。 つまり、この戯曲作品は、伊藤熹朔の舞台セットを作り込んでゆく方法論とはかなり異なるであろう。もちろんほとんど裸舞台にちかい『私たちの町』といえども、椅子やテーブルの配置は一層神経質に気を配らなければなるまい。その意味では伊藤熹朔の方法論と同じである。裸舞台も作品としての美術だからである。 自転車を駆っていてたまたま立ち寄った古本屋だったから、『伊藤熹朔 ー 舞台美術の巨人』をみつけることなど予想もしていなかった。こういう出会いは妙に嬉しい。 もう一冊の英書は、『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』の著者の作品である。ベッド・サイド・ストーリーとして丁度良いだろう。 帰宅したら、シャツから出た腕が日焼けで真っ赤になっていた。 According to my memo, it has been hot for nine days every day from the end of the rainy season on July 30 to today. At my place, it recorded 35 ℃ before noon today. However, I couldn't just stay in my house, and I went out by bicycle for exercise. On the way, i went to a secondhand books's store and bought two books. Haiyuza edit.,"Ito Kisaku; Giant of the Stage Designer" (published by NHK Publishing) and English book Dan Brown "DIGITAL FORTRESS". I actually watched a number of theatrical perform-ances of stage arts by the late Mr. Ito. If I add his arts for films to this, I would have seen how much. So much I have seen the stage art of Mr. Ito. In fact, what I'm currently reading from going to bed until I get sleep---I've already read it over and over again---Thornton Wilder's collection of plays. One of these, "OUR TOWN", depicts the everyday life of a small town called Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, USA, from 1901 to 1913（The final scene is 1899). There is nothing to say, but there is the beginning of love for youth, marriage, childbirth, death for civil war(1861-65), and the last was all dead and talk as dead. ---This stage art has nothing but tables and chairs. There is no curtain between the stage and audiences. There are also no props. The stage has the role of "Stage manager" from beginning to end, and he ex-plains that thereis a mountain in there, there are many churches here and there, this is the cafeteria of everyone, and so on, to evoke the audience's imagination. Actors have breakfast and drink coffee with pantomime, and Milk man runs a milk deliverycarriage with pantomaime. Of course I can't see the horse either. The Actor talk to the horse named Bessie as if it were here, and enter and leave the stage. The final cemetery has chairs lined up on thestage towrds the audience---that is, these are graves, tombstone, and the actors are sitting on the chair as dead. As I read, I thought that this eould not be possible as a theater without the skill of an actor, but I would like to make a produce without knowing my abilities,and creative enargy was hard. It rises inside my body. Inother words, this drama work was quite different from the methodology of creating the stage set of Ito Kisaku. Of course, even in "OUR TOWN", which is almost a naked stage, the arrangement of chairs and tables must be more sensitive. In that sense, it is the same as Ito's theory. This is because the naked stage is also art as a work. Because I was riding a bicycle and stopped by a secondhand bookstore, I didn't expect to find "Ito Kisaku ; Giant of the Stage Designer". I am happy to meet like this. Another English book is the work of the author of "Da Vinci Code". It will be a good bedside story of me.

「日本人の心」って、いったい何だ？
連日の猛暑。外出が億劫になる。予定を変更して、今日も午前中から午後9時まで講義用のスライド制作をしていた。昨日までの37ページに12ページを加えた。もうほとんど完成だ。近代アートと現代アートについての少しばかりの言及を残すだけである。2,3日で終わるだろう。その後はまた絵の制作にとりかかる。 やくざな卑劣な連中がこぞって「日本人の心」だとか何とか言ってファッシズムを煽っている。 「日本人の心」って、いったい何だ？ 狂気か？ 私の心は日本人の心ではないのだろうか？ 私の心を犯罪的な脅迫者と同じにされては堪らない。 The intense heat of every day. Going out is a mess.I changed the schedule and made slides for my lec-ture today from mid -morning to 9 pm. I added 12pages to 37 pages of until yesterday. Almost fin-ished. It only leaves a few references to modern art and contemporary art. It will end in a few days. Afterthat, I will start making pictures again. All the nasty and the cowardly politician and people are pushing for fascism, saying " Japanese mind" or something. What exactly is the "Japanese mind?" It is crazy? Is my mind not Japanese? 終日，講義用スライド制作
今日は午前10時から午後6時まで講義用のスライド制作。現在37ページ、84点の写真を収録した。 600余点のコレクションの中から、時代思潮が的確に表現されているイメージ、また時代を先取りしているイメージ、あるいは後の時代に影響を与えたイメージ等等を選び出す。原資料の英語やラテン語やフランス語あるいはドイツ語やイタリア語などを辞書を繰って読みながらの作業は、私は楽しんでいるけれどもなかなか骨の折れる仕事である。 ヨーロッパ精神史が柱であるが、それに添うような構成でわずかながら小乗仏教論と大乗仏教論も話しておくほうが良いかとも思う。 難しい問題は難しいままに話すというのが私の方針である。以前の講義の最中に眠ってしまった人がいたと御注進があった。つまり、一般の受講者には難しすぎるという私への忠告だったのだろう。「あはは、眠らせておいてください」と私は言った。 難しい問題をあえて簡単に話してしまうと、重要な点が抜け落ちてしまうことを、私は経験で知っている。もちろん私の技術不足もあろう。まあ、そこは講義後にでも私に食って掛かって下さればよい。とことん議論しているうちに真に到達すべきところに到達するだろう。それがおもしろいのである。 Today, I made slides for my lecture from 10 am to 6 pm. Currently 37 pages, 84 photos have been rec-orded. From the collection of over 600 photos, Ichoose an image that accurately represents thethought of the times, an image that is ahead of times, or an image that has influenced the later times. The source materials are in English, in Latin,in French, in German or in Italian. As I read thedictionaries, I am enjoying it, but it is a dauntingtask. European mental history is a pillar of the lecture,but I think that it is better to talk about HinayanaBuddhism and Mahayanist Buddhism theory in aconfiguration that conforms to that as well. My policy is to talk about difficult problem ashard as possible. I was told that there were people who fell asleep during the previous lecture. In other word, it was that advice that it was too difficult for ordinary attendance. "Ah, let them sleep," I said. I know from experience that if I dare to talk about a difficult problem easily, important points will be missed. Of course there wiould be a lack of my skills. Well, it's okay to snap my head off after the lecture. We will reach where we really need to reach while we are discussing thoroughly. That is interesting.
