At the beginning of the month, I wrote about my Omega coming back from repair: Watch Trouble, Repair, and Overhaul Taking this opportunity, I decided to have my “reserve unit,” the Mahara Chronograph, overhauled as well.
You don’t often hear about overhauling a quartz watch, but in this case, when I had the battery replaced a few years ago, I was advised that the inside was starting to show signs of rust and that maintenance would be a good idea. That said, since this brand no longer exists, there’s no official service center to send it to. So I searched online and requested an estimate from the following site: Watch Repair & Overhaul – Tamtime http://tamtime.net/
The other day I received an estimate by email. It included a URL, and when I accessed it, I found photos of the watch along with the prescribed work.
#危惧していたほど、錆は広まっていませんね。 The rust hasn’t spread as much as I had feared.
The case-back gasket has deteriorated and will be replaced. The crystal will be cleaned, but there are limits to how much the dirt can be removed (it will not be perfectly clear). ※ Please note: Water resistance cannot be guaranteed. Avoid using the watch around water.
Other Notes The turnaround time is approximately three weeks from confirmation of repair. An additional shipping fee of ¥756 will apply. If you choose “Cash on Delivery” as the payment method, a COD handling fee of ¥432 will be charged.
…And so, the estimate came to 27,000 yen. It’s by no means a small sum, but considering that this is an overhaul of a discontinued model from a defunct brand, I see it as an unavoidable expense. I went ahead and requested the repair right away.
Once it’s finished, I’ll share an update here on the blog.
