Overview
FCPS PreK and Early Head Start program provides a high quality early learning experience for qualifying children ages 6 weeks to 4 years old.

Eligibility
Your family may qualify for PreK or Early Head Start if you:
- Live in Fairfax County
- PreK: Have a child who will be age 3 or 4 by September 30
- Early Head Start: Have a child who is 0-2 years of age and pregnant women who live in the Reston, Herndon and Springfield areas.
- Have a student(s) with economic and educational risk factors such as:
- Income eligibility
- Homelessness or Foster Care
- A Parent with Limited Education
- Student receives Special Education Services
Though families may qualify, spaces are limited and selection is based on need, not “first come, first serve”, with PreK priority given to 4-year-olds and students with multiple risk factors. The application process begins every January for the upcoming school year. However, it is important for all families to apply as soon as possible.

Next Steps
A PreKstaff member will contact you after we receive your application. They will help guide your family through the rest of the application process.
- A parent or legal guardian must meet with a family service partner. You will be contacted by the family service partner to schedule an appointment.
- Your child must have a current school physical with up-to-date immunizations.
- A home visit with the teacher must be completed. The teacher will call you to schedule an appointment.
Note: The application eligibility, selection, and enrollment process is managed centrally at the Office of Early Childhood Curriculum and Grant Management located in Falls Church; not at schools. Health Forms
As children are enrolled in PreK or Early Head Start, it is important to maintain accurate medical records. The health form is required to be on file before a child’s first day of school.
