08ヤゴすくい　　Dragonfly nymph scooping 2008

今年もやってきました。ヤゴすくいの季節

漢字をあてはめると「ヤゴ掬い」でもあり、「ヤゴ救い」でもあります。年々水辺が少なくなっている都内では、トンボたちは、学校のプールなどに卵を産み付けます。ところが、プールは、プール開きの季節になれば、清掃され、そこに棲みついていたヤゴたちは死滅してしまいます。
そこで、こうしたイベントを催して、子供たちにヤゴを持ち帰ってもらい、一匹でも多くトンボにして返してやろうという試みなのです。

ヤゴすくいは、世田谷公園で開催される「環境フェスタ」の一イベントとして実施されますが、毎年かなりの子供たちが集まります。

開始前に、NPOの方によるトンボの生態の紙芝居。ちなみに去年と同じ人でした。

子供たちは、ヤゴに興味津々。

さあ、いよいよヤゴすくいです。大きな網で、プールの底のドロを掬い取ると、その中にヤゴがうじゃうじゃいます。

大漁、大漁。今年は30匹近く採れました。

去年は12～3匹採ってきて、たしか6匹ぐらい羽化に成功しました。（直後にカミサンのベープマットで死んでしまった可愛そうな個体

The Season of Dragonfly Nymph Scooping Has Arrived Again! 🐉

If we were to write it in kanji, it could be “ヤゴ掬い” (scooping nymphs) or “ヤゴ救い” (saving nymphs). In Tokyo, where natural waterways are disappearing year by year, dragonflies often lay their eggs in school pools and other man-made water sources. But when the pools are cleaned for the season, the nymphs living there perish.

This event is an attempt to let kids take the nymphs home and raise them—so that even just a few more can survive to become dragonflies.

The nymph-scooping takes place as part of the “Environmental Festa” at Setagaya Park, and every year a lot of kids show up.

Before the scooping starts, an NPO volunteer gave a picture-story show about dragonfly ecology. By the way, it was the same person as last year.

The kids were fascinated by the nymphs.

And now, the scooping begins! Using large nets to scoop up the mud from the bottom of the pool, the nymphs wriggle out of the sludge in large numbers.

A big catch! This year, we collected nearly 30 nymphs.

Last year we caught about 12–13, and around six successfully emerged as dragonflies (though a few unfortunate ones immediately succumbed to my wife’s mosquito repellent mat…). This year, we hope to raise at least ten and release them into the open sky. 🕊️
