The climate threat to Japanese rice
In Japan government scientists are trying to find ways to reduce the impact of global warming on the country's rice crop. There are fears that the extremes of temperature that some researchers are predicting could affect both the yield and the quality of rice, a staple of the Japanese diet. Flowering grain crops like maize, wheat and rice are particularly vulnerable to changes in temperature. Rice is believed to have been cultivated in Japan for more than 2,500 years. Although people are eating less than they used to, on average each person here still eats more than a kilogramme a week. (BBC News)*****staple（主要産物、必需食料品）maize（とうもろこし）＊＊＊＊＊「ナショナル・トレジャー、リンカーン暗殺の日記」を観ました。数週間前ちょうどその第一話をテレビで見ていい映画だと思い、この第２話が先週公開されて昨日観に行きました。ダビンチコードに似ていると思っているとこの第一話の方が早く出来ていますね。なぞを解いていくのがおもしろいし有名な場所が出てきて楽しい。ロンドンの辺りがアメリカの映画の場面のように激しい車の運転ではらはらして、わ～、うー、きゃ～とつい声に出してしまい笑ってしまいました。どきどきはらはらスリル満点です。素晴らしい暗号解読の両親を持つ天才学者の冒険の中にいつのまにか入ってしまいました。謎のマスターメーソンとは？フリーメーソンの偉い人ですか？国立図書館にあるなぞの本の場所の番号などあんなにすぐ言える？またニコラス・ケイジもすぐ聞いて覚えることができる？やっぱり天才は違う！と驚くばかり。ご両親もあのラシュモア山の中に冒険していく姿に人生のおもしろさを見せてもらえたと思いました。２００７年も今日まで、今年も私のブログを読んでくださってありがとうございました。来年２００８年もどうぞよろしくご指導お願い致します。

Rich life emerges from nature's freezer
The Arctic ice supports, literally, the polar bear, a half-tonne behemoth of creamy-white fur and muscle and claws you would not argue with. It is highly visible and hugely iconic. But just as the tiger and the rhinoceros depend on creatures you cannot see without a microscope and would not willingly give house room to if you could, so does the polar bear stand, literally, on a patchwork lattice of invisible, miniscule life. Life-forms such as polychaetes (or bristleworms), copepods and amphipods that live just under the ice, around its edge, or even inside the floes themselves. (BBC News)*****behemoth（巨大な）claw（（昆虫の）つめ）rhinoceros（サイ）polychaete（多毛類）amphipod（端脚類）＊＊＊＊＊セントレアから名古屋駅まで電車で行き、名古屋駅で地下鉄一日乗車券７４０円を買って後ろを見るとそこに地下鉄バスどちらも乗れるドニチエコキップ６００円を販売していました。土日ばかりでなく２４日、祭日もこの切符が使えるのですね。え！と思って相談するとすぐ替えてくださってお金も１４０円戻ってきました。ラッキー☆それに施設割引までできるらしい。有頂天なって名古屋テレビ塔（５００円―＞６００円）に一気に上りました。ランドマークビル群、名古屋城などソファーに腰掛けてじっくりみました。オアシス２１の地下からバスに乗り徳川園に行きました。帰りやってきたバスに乗るとそれは名鉄バスだったので一日乗車券は使えず２００円払わないといけませんでした。クシュン＊つぎに名古屋駅から地下鉄で亀島へノリタケの森に行きました。陶器だけかと思ったら最先端テクノロジーなどの紹介があり勉強になりました。すばらしい。http://www.noritake.co.jp/mori/culture/celabo/index.html翌日はマリオネットホテル１５階でクリスマスランチ、ちょうどイギリスから来ていた家族と少しおしゃべりして素敵なクリスマス雰囲気を味わって家路につきました。

Skating traced back 4,000 years
The world's first skaters are likely to have taken to the ice about 4,000 years ago on the frozen lakes of Finland, according to a UK-based research team. They seem to have used skates made out of horse bones, Dr Federico Formenti of Oxford University, co-author of a paper on the subject, told the BBC. His team tested replicas of bone-skates from the British Museum over several years at an Alpine location. He said the skates were fun to use and compared well with modern equivalents. "From our study it seems that [the skating] happened particularly in the southern area of Finland where there are many small lakes," Dr Formenti told BBC Radio 4's You And Yours programme. Instead of walking all the way around the lake, he said, people found it much easier to travel between towns by skating or walking across the ice.(BBC News)*****equivalent（同等の）＊＊＊＊＊秋保にはこけしなどの伝統工芸の職人の工房が集まっていました。そこでこけしを買ったのですがその隣には埋もれ木細工という工房がありました。５万年前の化石になった埋もれ木が味わい深い色を出していました。次に広瀬川が流れる橋を渡ると１５６７年に米沢で生まれ１６３６年に亡くなった伊達政宗の墓こと瑞鳳殿へ、仙台城址、最後に楽天球場にも。白と赤の建物が素敵でした。夜はまた光のページェントへ行くと人の多さにびっくり。翌日は仙台から名古屋までの飛行機からの眺めが最高に美しかったです。飛び立つとまず見えたのが太平洋、しばらくすると銚子の手前に霞ヶ浦が長く延びて見えました。そして今度は白いベールに包まれた富士山が美しくそびえていました。その美しさに魅せられて写真をいくつか撮っていると今度は日本アルプスが僕も撮ってとまた白く薄化粧をしていました。１時間ほど経ってまた広い湖らしいものが見えました。あれは浜名湖だったのでしょう。

'Medical myths' exposed as untrue
Some claim drinking eight glasses of water a day leads to good health, while reading in dim light damages eyesight. Others believe we only use 10% of our brains or that shaving legs causes hair to grow back thicker. But a review of evidence by US researchers surrounding seven commonly-hold beliefs suggests they are actually "medical myths". Some are utterly untrue, while others have no evidential proof, the British Medical Journal reports. Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis hunted medical literature for evidence on each claim. They found no evidence supporting the need to drink eight glasses of water a day. (BBC News)*****untrue（真実でない）dim（かすかな）utterly（全く）＊＊＊＊＊今年のクリスマスは仙台と名古屋で過ごしました。２１日の夜に仙台に着いて２２日の午前中は友人が泉パークタウンや泉ヶ岳を見せてくれた。泉パークタウンの辺りの大きな通りと現代的な建物に驚きました。泉ヶ丘のスキー場には雪が見えました。午後は松島へ着くと観光船で松島湾を一周し、瑞巌寺へ、４００年ほど昔のお寺も素晴らしいのですがその歩道沿いにある修業僧が生活していた洞窟や石像などに興味津々。かまぼこを食べようとお店に行くと竹の箸に刺したかまぼこをゆっくりと１５分位そこで焼いて食べます（２００円）。隣にいた３人の人にどこからですかと尋ねると東京から日帰りでやってきたと、仙台は新幹線が通り東京から近いので仙台に別荘を持つ人もいるらしい。そのあと仙台に戻り定禅寺通の光のページェントが灯される５時３０分にちょうどそこに車でいました。車、車で動けない状態でした。でもちょうどよかった。その美しい中に長くいられたから。そのあと秋保（アキウ）温泉へ行きました。翌日は上から眺められる秋保大滝を見ました。（続）

'Active glacier found' on Mars
A probable active glacier has been identified for the first time on Mars. The icy feature has been spotted in images from the European Space Agency's (Esa) Mars Express spacecraft. Ancient glaciers, many millions of years old, have been seen before on the Red Planet, but this one may only be several thousand years old. The young glacier appears in the Deuteronilus Mensae region between Mars' rugged southern highlands and the flat northern lowlands. (BBC News)*****glacier（氷河）rug（強く引く）＊＊＊＊＊ラザフォード（ＪＧクラウザー著、金関、今井訳）を読みました。原子物理学者（核物理学）の父と呼ばれるラザフォードは１８７１年ニュージーランドで生まれました。１８４２年彼の祖父母ら２００人ほどがイギリスからニュージーランドへ移住した。体が剛健で人付き合いの良い人だけが生き残った。人間より自然との闘い、そんな人々を見て育った彼は生存が必要なことであり、生活は生き甲斐があり科学は遣り甲斐のあるものと。１８９５年ケンブリッジ大学で研究を始め、X線の発見、ヘルツの証明、アルゴンの発見、原子核の発見など。彼はアインシュタインの研究に偏見を持ち、相対性理論が発表される２年前に明らかにしていたがやはり彼の考えは間違いであったと気づいた。１９３７年６６歳で亡くなって彼の弟子らはイギリスの原子科学をアメリカへ手渡した。彼は自分の地位を私利私欲に利用することはなかったし、研究に十分な費用だけしか期待しなかった。などと彼の生き様を読んで深く感動しました。

Lung cancer 'link to lack of sun'
Lack of sunlight may increase the risk of lung cancer, a study suggests. Researchers found lung cancer rates were highest in countries furthest from the equator, where exposure to sunlight is lowest. It is thought vitamin D - generated by exposure to sunlight - can halt tumour growth by promoting the factors responsible for cell death in the body. The University of California, San Diego study appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Experts warn that exposure to sunlight is still the major cause of skin cancer - a disease which is on the increase around the world. Lung cancer kills more than one million people every year around the globe. (BBC News)*****equator（赤道）exposure（さらされている状態）halt（停止する）＊＊＊＊＊月曜日は友達とランチ忘年会して１時間２５０円で飲み放題カラオケに行きました。ホットコーヒーとゆずソーダにしました。ゆずが底にいっぱい入っていてとってもおいしかったです。昨日はフィットネスクラブに行きました。足の上下運動するマシーンがあります。それは時速６キロの歩きやエアロバイク負荷６０でするのより２倍位カロリー消費があります。それをしながら本を読みます。隣に来た人が胃の調子が悪いと薬を飲むけど治らないと思ってインターネットでチェックしたらその薬はカルシュームと一緒に飲むと効き目が薄れるということが載っていたのでカルシューム摂れないというので別の隣の人が健康に関するフィットネスの本を読んでいると塩ヨーグルトというのが載っているといいます。これは沢山カルシュームも摂れて便秘や脂肪燃焼にいいというので昨日は早速帰りにお店でプレーンヨーグルト買ってミネラルウォーター１１０ｃｃに塩少し混ぜてヨーグルト１１０ｇ混ぜて飲みました。結構いい感じ。

Rising seas 'to beat predictions'
The world's sea levels could rise twice as high this century as UN climate scientists have previously predicted, according to a study. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change proposes a maximum sea level rise of 81cm (32in) this century. But in the journal Nature Geoscience, researchers say the true maximum could be about twice that: 163cm (64in). They looked at what happened more than 100,000 years ago - the last time Earth was this warm. The results join other studies showing that current sea level projections may be very conservative. Sea level rise is a key effect of global climate change. Body clock 'control switch' found
Researchers say they have identified the chemical switch that controls the genetic mechanism regulating people's internal body clocks. Although the process involves complex genes, the whole mechanism is controlled by a single amino acid - a building block of protein - they say. It is hoped the discovery may lead to more effective drugs to treat sleep disorders and related ailments. The University of California study appears in the journal Nature. Obesity 'raises gum disease risk'
The rise in obesity may be going hand-in-hand with increases in severe gum disease, US research suggests. As many as 40% of adults worldwide have periodontal disease, and tests on mice hint that obesity makes us vulnerable to the bacteria which cause it. Boston University scientists reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that fat mice had a "blunted" immune system. This may mean obese humans are more at risk from all bacterial infections. 'Skin cell cure' for sickle cells
Scientists say they have found a new weapon against the blood disease sickle cell anaemia - the skin. By reprogramming skin cells in the lab to become stem cells, the US team were able to treat mice with a human type of sickle cell anaemia, Science reports. As well as being in plentiful supply, using skin cells as a therapy also gets round the ethics surrounding the use of other stem-cell based treatments. Experts stressed more safety work was needed before moving trials to humans. (BBC News)*****sickle（（赤血球が）鎌状になる）anaemia（貧血）ethic（倫理、道徳）＊＊＊＊＊「三十歳までなんか生きるな」と思っていた（保坂和志著）を読みました。数学者のひらめきは十代のうちにやってくる。十代ににひらめいたことを１０年、２０年掛かって証明する。１２月４日にチンパンジーの記憶力は写真のように優れているとニュースに取り上げましたがここで彼が人間は見るために目を使っているつもりでいてその実物の空間配慮など最低限のことを見ているだけでそれ以上のいろいろなことを見ないために見ていると、もし普段の視覚が活発なら言葉でそれをフォローできなくなってしまう。小説、音楽、絵画、映画などの芸術は数値化を含む共通了解の誘惑に抗して言葉や思考で練り上げて共有できると、１２月４日４０－loveさんのコメントにあった自閉症のことサヴァン症候群やアスペルガー症候群の話もあります。科学的世界観はanimism的世界観と宗教的世界観のふたつが同居すると人間の思考というのは簡単なものの組み合わせではないか？問題はその訓練をすることに抵抗する自我があるからだと、またニートを批判するせこさ、城山三郎の特攻隊のお話、空間と時間のお話、幕末までに成人した人たちは自己抑制が身について非常に魅力的だったらしいなど興味あるお話が多かったです。

How elephants keep tabs on family
Elephants keep track on up to 30 absent relatives by sniffing out their scent and building up a mental map of where they are, research suggests. Herd members use their good memory and keen sense of smell to stay in touch as they travel in large groups, according to a study of wild elephants in Kenya. The University of St Andrews studied 36 family groups of elephants living in Amboseli National Park. The research is published in the Royal Society journal, Biology Letters. (BBC News)*****keep track（（～の動静を）憶えている）snif out（～に感づく）herd（群、多数）＊＊＊＊＊「人は声から若返る」（福島英著）を読みました。声を聞けば健康状態がわかる。加齢声は心身老化のサイン、声が低くなり抑揚がなくなり話し声が平坦になる。声にはりがなく、話すテンポが遅い、筋肉の衰えが原因。声は吐く息でコントロールされる。You are what you eat.食べ物が体を作る。姿勢と歩き方、腹式呼吸のやり方、息読みトレーニング、顔、舌のトレーニング、母音が綺麗になるトレーニングなどと読んでいくと日本語音声入力のパソコンソフトや英語音声入力ソフト、発音のチェックをしてくれるものもあるらしい。また鼻声で曲名を出してくれるソフトや声から感情分析するソフトまであるらしいです。また日本語は高低アクセント(pitch accent)に対して英語は強弱アクセント(stress accent)が中心であると、でもやはり最高のアンチエイジング法は歌、カラオケに行かなくては。

Chimps beat humans in memory test
Chimpanzees have an extraordinary photographic memory that is far superior to ours, research suggests. Young chimps outperformed university students in memory tests devised by Japanese scientists. The tasks involved remembering the location of numbers on a screen, and correctly recalling the sequence. The findings, published in Current Biology, suggest we may have under-estimated the intelligence of our closest living relatives. We had loads of yummy foods that my mom and I spend days making. My favorite Thanksgiving food is Cranberry cobbler. と日曜日にこの夏アメリカへ帰って行ったALTからメールがきました。Cranberry cobblerっておいしそうですね。クランベリーが入ったフルーツパイでしょうか？あちらは雪で寒いのでもうすぐ暑いマーシャル島へ行くと嬉しいそうです。モントリオールのDanielleへ感謝祭はどうでしたかとメールしたら昨日カナダの感謝祭は１０月の初めで今年は忙しくアメリカのALTのextended familyに対してnuclear familyだけでの食事だったからI cooked a chicken and stuffed it with fruits.と返事がきました。昨日はsnow stormでー１７度だったらしい。彼女の小さい頃は沢山のsnow stormが来ていつも学校が休みになるかを確かめるためラジオを聴いていたらしい。雪で閉ざされると ski-dooで食料、医療や医師を運んでいたとまたsnow castles, iglooを作って遊んだと昔のことを教えてくれました。

50 years on: The Keeling Curve legacy
It is a scientific icon, which belongs, some claim, alongside E=mc2 and the double helix. Its name - the Keeling Curve - may be scarcely known outside scientific circles, but the jagged upward slope showing rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere has become one of the most famous graphs in science, and a potent symbol of our times. It was 50 years ago that a young American scientist, Charles David Keeling, began tracking CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere at two of the world's last wildernesses - the South Pole and the summit of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii. (BBC News)*****keel（不安定に傾く）alongside（～と比べて）helix（らせん）potent（強い？）＊＊＊＊＊映画イエスキリスト誕生以前の母マリアと夫ヨセフの物語「マリア」を観ました。物語としては良く知られているのですが何か新しいことを知ることができると思い観に行くとびっくり３０００年に一度という星の重なりでイエスキリストが誕生していたのです。３０００年に一度ということを検索するとまた驚きました。今年の６月に３０００年に一度の神の目が見られたのですね。NASAで撮られた写真をブログでたくさん公開されていました。また、神坂新太郎という人の宇宙実験塾のお話などをYou Tubeで観る所まで辿り着きました。 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmQAxqK8HaE&feature=related上のホームページへ行けばこの神の目のお話や優しい心に触れることができます。またこの映画を観てマリアのころ結婚前に子どもを宿したら石を投げて殺すほどの罪であるとしていたらしいのですがそれほどの秩序を保とうとした時代、そういう秩序を作られた人々の知恵に関心を持ちました。
