Apple juice 'may prevent asthma'
Children who drink plenty of apple juice may be less likely to develop asthma symptoms, say scientists. The National Heart and Lung Institute research, published in the European Respiratory Journal, is the latest study to link apples and lung health. Children who drank apple juice at least once a day were half as likely to suffer from wheezing as those drinking it less than once a month, it found. Eating fresh apples themselves gave no apparent benefits, the study concluded. (BBC News)*****respiratory（呼吸性の）wheeze（ゼイゼイいう）＊＊＊＊＊昨日は、久しぶりにALTとの英会話に出席しました。あるクラスメートからお見舞いに行けなかったからとお花の付きのお菓子をもらって、またある人は枇杷を実家からもらったと持って来て下さいました。そこでALTにこの果物知っていますか？と尋ねると日本に３年いるイギリスのALTは枇杷とすぐ答えました。辞書にloquatとあるのでloquatと呼ばないのですかと尋ねると１年目のアメリカのALTはどちらの名前も知らないけれどカリフォルニア辺りでその果物はできるのではないかしらとあまり関心がないようでした。イギリスでも見かけないと聞きましたが日本以外にいったいどこの国に枇杷は生るのでしょうか。最近枇杷の葉で作られた枇杷茶が美容と健康にいいとも聞いています。

Lower gout risk for coffee lovers
Drinking four or more cups of coffee a day may cut the risk of having a painful attack of gout, say Canadian scientists. A University of British Columbia team found blood uric acid levels - which are linked to the condition - were lower in people who drank more coffee. But tea had no measurable effect, suggesting that the active ingredient was not caffeine. The work is published in the journal Arthritis Care and Research. (BBC News)*****gout（痛風）uric（尿の）measurable（計り得る、重要な）active（反応性のある）＊＊＊＊＊人生を豊かにする「脳の力大研究」（林成之著）を読みました。わ～～感動です。この本を読むと人生が変わると思います。意識と心の関係、頭を良くする脳活用、スポーツ上達法、幼児期の教育法などとても興味深いです。教育や哲学など大切ですが人と対話して心を磨くこと、良質の音楽や絵画に触れること、スポーツなどを介してコミュニケーション能力を高めるなど人間の心と品格を高めることが大事である。戦争を起こさない原理として過剰反応しない、同じ仲間意識をもつ、考えの違いはあってもその違いをある程度認め互いに生きていくこと。人間の本能に生きたい自分を守りたいという自己保存の本能があり勝ち組負け組みなど自己保存の本能が働きすぎて現代社会が不幸な人が生まれる方向へ進んでいる。だから今、国のリーダーそれぞれの指導者はこの脳科学を学ばれてほしいと思います。また最後にはモーツアルトとメンデルスゾーンの聞き分け訓練などびっくりする英会話の上達法もあります。CDで聴いたモーツアルトでは胎児には効き目がなかったのですねやはり生の演奏でないと、その訳は。

Magnets 'help regrow brain cells'
Magnets may offer a way to boost mental performance, US research suggests. Scientists in New York promoted the growth of new neurons in the brains of mice using a magnetic stimulus in the region associated with memory. Presenting the results at the American Academy for Neuroscience conference, the researchers said the results may lead to treatments for Alzheimer's. However, if proven the technique is more likely to be a way of slowing progression of the disease than a cure. Experts said the work was encouraging but would need to be replicated in humans. (BBC News)*****magnetic（磁石の）stimulus（刺激）＊＊＊＊＊昨日、陶芸教室に参加したことをこのブログで紹介したらルーシー・リーという人が今朝このブログを訪問くださいました。ルーシー・リーは２０世紀の陶芸を語る時、必ず登場すると言う有名な人らしいです。1902年ウィーンに生まれたルーシー・リーは、１９２２年工業美術学校に入学し、ろくろのとりことなったとあったので轆轤って一体いつごろどこでできたのかと検索すると、紀元前６０００年から２４００年の間にメソポタミアで発明されたとも言われ、中国やエジプトなども青銅器時代だと主張されているらしい。日本には弥生時代でしょうか。このLucie Rieはウィーン生まれ。1938年イギリスに移住後、生涯を過ごすとあるのでBBCで検索すると彼女のことを英語で紹介されています。５時に起きて仕事を始めていたのでしょうか。彼女はdameをもらった（Dameとはknightに相当する位を授かった婦人）とあります。日本語で調べたのでこれを聴いて少しわかりました。http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2002_11_fri_03.shtml

High-salt diet link to ulcer risk
The bug that causes stomach ulcers may be more likely to cause disease when exposed to high concentrations of salt, a US team of researchers has said. Two genes associated with the potency of Helicobacter pylori became more active if a lot of salt is present. Presenting the results at the American Society for Microbiology conference, the researchers said research had shown salt was linked to gastric cancer. Experts said the findings suggested how salt and H. Pylori may interact. H. pylori lives in the stomach, and accounts for up to 90% of duodenal ulcers and up to 80% of gastric ulcers. (BBC News)*****bug（微生物、病原菌）ulcer（潰瘍）potency（勢力）gastric（胃の）interact（相互に作用する）duodenal（十二指腸の）＊＊＊＊＊今年の市民講座は着付けと水彩画を申し込んだけど水彩画は漏れ、着付けだけがOKでした。でも陶芸の自主講座に友達が入るように手続きしてくれていたのできょうはその始まりで、９時３０分になっても家にまだいたものだから「何時になりますか」と会長さんから電話があり急いで講座へ行きました。２キロ粘土（３００円）を買い、大きな深い器と小さな器を作りました。先生が梅の模様を色の違う粘土を使って埋め込む方法を教えてくださって粋なものが出来上がりました。数年前からやっている人たちは金太郎飴のように棒状に作って数枚に切ってお皿を作っている人がいました。ピカチュウが何枚も出来上がっている人にはびっくりしました。お昼は皆（２５人）であるホテルの素敵なランチをいただきました。自主講座は３時過ぎまであるのでちょっと疲れます。

Allergy fear on 'green' laundry
Low-temperature cycles in washing machines don't get rid of some of the most common causes of allergy attacks, say scientists. "Green" energy-efficient 30 or 40 degree celsius washes only killed 6% of house dust mites compared with 100% at 60 degrees, Korean researchers found. Allergy UK agreed with these latest findings presented at an American Thoracic Society conference. It advises allergy sufferers use 60 degree washes. (BBC News)*****energy-efficient（省エネの）celsius（摂氏の）sufferer（患者）＊＊＊＊＊昨日はお昼前にカナダの元ALTからI believe that "seasoned number crunchers" is slang for either an accountant, or a financial advisor/planner.とやっと返事が来た。先日このブログ（５月７日）でわからない言葉を尋ねたのでその返事と最近彼はテニスをしたりハイキングに行ったり明日はシーズン最後のスキーにBanffへ行くらしいと。お昼過ぎにはTinaがデンマークからハネムーン旅行からの絵葉書を出してくれていたのが届き、夜にはもうドイツからメールも届きました。そのデンマークからの絵葉書の切手は風力発電の絵が描いてあります。スカーゲンに行ったとある、そこはスカゲラク海峡(North sea)とカテガット海峡（Baltic sea）のtipの辺りと説明があるので地図を見て確認しました。ハンブルグよりちょっと北にあるPellworm islandの灯台での結婚式はとっても素晴らしかったらしい。

Pre-birth apples 'benefit babies'
Children of mothers who eat plenty of apples during pregnancy are less likely to develop asthma, research suggests. The University of Aberdeen project quizzed 2,000 mums-to-be on their eating habits, then looked at their child's health over five years. They found that those who ate four or more apples a week were half as likely to have an asthmatic child compared with those who ate one or fewer. The study was presented at the American Thoracic Society conference. (BBC News)＊＊＊＊＊土曜日から始まったばかりの「主人公は僕だった」を観ました。始まる前にちょっとポップコーンとウーロン茶を頂いていると横のテーブルに島村楽器のパンフレットがありました。よくみるとギターがいっぱい載っていました。わ～～これってこの映画の演出だったのでしょうか。あとでこの真面目すぎる主人公がギターを片手に素晴らしい歌を披露してくれるのです。この盛り上がりは素晴らしいです。感動します。うん涙もぽろりするかも。始まりは歯切れのいい音楽と一緒にこの主人公こと几帳面すぎる会計検査官のハロルドが計算をしながら歯磨きを始めます。最初は気持ちいいのですが彼の頭に女の声が聞こえ始めます。なんかこの人病気なのだとこちらまで病気になりそうです。そしてある人に恋してしまいます。その人はおいしいクッキーを作るのでその人にプレゼントしたものはflowerではなくflourだったのです。

'Chemo' gene helps cancer thrive
A gene thought to be crucial for chemotherapy to work may instead help cancer survive, US scientists fear. The p53 gene's job is to tell faulty cells to self destruct, and so experts assumed it helped in killing cancer cells that chemotherapy had injured. But a trial at the Georgia Institute of Technology has found chemotherapy patients with normally functioning p53 fare worse than those with mutated p53. This suggests p53 may help some cancers come back, PLoS ONE journal reports. Antarctic 'treasure trove' found
An extraordinarily diverse array of marine life has been discovered in the deep, dark waters around Antarctica. Scientists have found more than 700 new species of marine creatures in seas once thought too hostile to sustain such rich biodiversity. Groups of carnivorous sponges, free-swimming worms, crustaceans and molluscs were collected. The findings, published in the journal Nature, could provide insights into the evolution of ocean life in this area. (BBC News)*****extraodinarily（非常に）diverse（種々の、多様な）array（配列、おびただしい数）hostile（敵意ある、都合の悪い）sustain（維持する）crustacean（甲殻類の）＊＊＊＊＊「さらばモンゴロイド」（神部武宣著）を読んでみました。読んでいくとブルーメンバハがよくでてくる。ドイツの比較解剖学者（１７５２～１８４０）頭骨の計測的研究をもとに人種を５つに分けた人類学の父です。彼こそがこのモンゴロイドという名前をつけた人です。ルネッサンス時代に羅針盤などの発明により航海が発達して、色々な人種に出会い比較研究されたのでしょう。啓蒙時代にリンネ（１７０７～７８）が動物の分類を手がけたそのあとブルーメンバハが人種を５つに分けたがリンネが人種はいくつからの種ではなくひとつの種であるホモサピエンスという学名を与えた。ビュフォンはラップ、タルタル、南アジア、ヨーロッパ、エチオピア、アメリカと分けているのもおもしろい。そのあとダーウィンが進化論、今では２００種類に分けられるといわれている。とにかくこの著者が言いたかったのはモンゴロイド、コーカソイド、ネグロイドなど今日使い続けるには不適切な名称であると、だからさらばという題にされたのでしょう。などとこの本で人類について歴史や学者など勉強しました。

Med diet 'cuts lung disease risk'
Eating a Mediterranean diet halves the risk of serious lung disease like emphysema and bronchitis, a study says. Grouped under the umbrella term chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), they are expected to become the world's third leading cause of death by 2020. French researchers tracked almost 43,000 men for 12 years. The Thorax study suggests the key could be that the Mediterranean diet is rich in anti-oxidants, which reduce the risk of tissue inflammation. Alternatively, lower levels of sugar and nitrates in the diet - both of which have been linked to impaired lung function - may play a role. Vitamin D 'may help ward off TB'
A dose of vitamin D may help ward off tuberculosis, research suggests. A study of 131 people found the vitamin helped to boost the ability of the body to inhibit the growth of bacteria that causes the respiratory disease. Researchers from Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Imperial College said it could be used to target at-risk patients or added to drinks. The study appeared in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Vitamin D was originally used to treat TB in sanatoriums before antibiotics came in to use. (BBC News)*****ward off（撃退する）inhibit（抑える）respiratory（呼吸性の）＊＊＊＊＊イケメン美術館（中山庸子著）を読みました。著者が修学旅行で惹かれたイケメンとは阿修羅像と明かされます。よく観ると素敵ですね。でもこの阿修羅はもともと古代インドの悪神だったらしい。だから不良少年のイメージの人に惹かれていたと、また著者が一番のイケメンと思っているレオ様（ダヴィンチ）が可愛がっていたサライという青年に興味を著者は持たれた。でもサライは美しかったけど盗みはするし嘘はつくらしい。そんなサライをレオ様はなぜ可愛がったのでしょう。レオ様が描いた自画像のお話もおもしろい。イケメンじゃないけど味わいのある男（ウルビーノ公爵）、ミケランジェロはブ男のレッテルを貼られていたらしい。レオ様が常に自分の身近に置いていた３枚の絵「モナリザ」「聖アンナと聖母子」「洗礼者ヨハネ」この本の最後を飾りたかったイケメン聖礼者ヨハネのスマイルはモナリザのスマイルとどことなく共通しているように思いました。などとこの本読んでいくうちに楽しく美術を学びました。

No romance for lovesick albatross
A lovesick albatross has spent the last 40 years unsuccessfully looking for romance in Scotland, 8,000 miles away from his natural breeding grounds. The lonely bird, dubbed Albert, is thought to have first arrived in Scotland after being blown off course in the South Atlantic in 1967. For the past four decades he has been engaged in a futile attempt to woo gannets on several remote islands. But experts said Albert had no prospect of finding a mate so far from home. See picture, ha-ha.とその文の下の大きな写真を見ると岩や海が見え横に行くとKathyがかっこよくrock-climbing, その真剣な顔を見てつい噴出してしまいました。元気ですとすぐ返事出しました。今朝はHelenとDanielleからメール。Helenへ月曜日にちょっと便秘と告げたのでDried apricots are very good for constipation, perhaps you should give them a try? I hope it helps! と知りませんでした。干し杏がいいのでしょうか。そしてベルリンマラソンに出場するらしい。ダニエルへ退院したとメールしてなかったのでI'm thinking a lot about you since you had your operation.I think you might be home now and wandering how you are doing.と心配してくれていましたのですぐ返事しました。

Coconut oil powers island's cars
People on the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea have found their own solution to high energy prices - the humble coconut. They are developing mini-refineries that produce a coconut oil that can replace diesel. From police officers to priests, the locals are powering up their vehicles and generators with coco-fuel. Inquiries for the coconut power have come in from overseas, including Iran and Europe. For years, the people of Bougainville have been dependent on expensive fuel imported onto the island. Shortages have often caused many businesses in this part of Papua New Guinea to grind to a halt. High energy costs have not helped either. (BBC News)*****humble（背の低い）refinery（製油所）replace（～に取って代わる）grind to a halt（ゆっくり停止する）＊＊＊＊＊キーワードで読む「イギリスの田園風景」（山森芳郎著）を読みました。Cottageという言葉は民家、cottagerとは資産を持たない農業労働者のことだそうです。またhedgeは生垣ですが石垣wall,イギリスの大規模なwallはイングランドの北辺を西海岸から東海岸まで120km「the Hadrian’s Wall」, イギリスとウェールズの壁「Offa’s Dyke」といってwallとはよばないらしい。からす麦についてa grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.とミッチェルジョンソンが１７００年代のことを書いているらしい。Road、laneやpathは日常の道路。歩行者が行き交うほどの狭い道trackとtrailまたfootpathは遊歩道と訳せばいいのですね.産業革命の風景に運河の写真、なんとなく京都南禅寺近くにある水路閣を思わせます。このブログで２００５年１２月２７日に書いたことを思い出しました。湖水地方の田園風景といえばターナーの岩山の絵、ワーズワースも岩山を詩にしているらしい。Moorは荒地、緑の牧草地はmeadow, heath。そしてキーツの詩deep in the shady sadness of valeと紹介されここでvaleは谷間、盆地daleもなどと沢山の単語をこの本で覚えました。

(BBC News)*****apart from（～は別として、～に加えて）cruncher（計算機）terabyte（電算テラバイト、１兆バイト）season（慣らす、習熟させる）＊＊＊＊＊先日入院した日に自分の手術の成功を思って「成功曲線を描こう」（石原明）を読んでみました。著者の考えるここでの成功とは「目標を持ち、自身を持って人生を送っている人、またその目標の実現を確認している人」のことだそうです。成功しようと思った時、考え方や習慣を見直すことから始まります。ノミは３m飛べる能力があります。でも実験で透明な６０ｃｍの箱に入れていると思い切りジャンプをするのにその透明な箱にぶつかり飛べないと思い込んでしまう。箱からだしても６０ｃｍだけしか飛べない状態が続くそうです。だから成功するために自分で自分をその気にさせる脳が誤解するまで成功線を描くことだと。Affirmation（自分をやる気にさせる手法）また言葉に出して使うことが大事だという。などと読んでいるうちに自分の夢が叶って成功曲線が描かれそうな本です。

The remarkable homing instincts of some coral reef fish have been revealed. A team tagged two species of reef fish larvae to see where the juveniles were going after spending weeks and even months maturing in open sea. It found most of the orange clownfish - made famous by the Finding Nemo movie - and vagabond butterflyfish returned to the reef where they had first hatched. Writing in the journal Science, the team said the discovery could have implications for marine protection. (BBC News)*****reef fish（珊瑚礁に棲息する数種のスズメダイの魚）larvae（幼生、幼虫）clownfish（スズメダイ科の小型の海産魚）vagabond（放浪する）implication（密接な関係）＊＊＊＊＊昨日無事退院しました。暖かいお見舞いのコメントありがとうございました。２４日に入院して２５日に手術しました。その夜と次の日までがとてもつらかったです。最初の２日間は１２０００円の個室の部屋で３日目から５０００円の個室で豪華なホテルにいるようでした。４日目から友達が来てくれました。ピンク系のアレンジメントフラワーで低めの物、ピンク系の高く飾られたもの、黄色系のアレンジメントフラワーも珍しく元気がでました。バスケットいっぱいに洋菓子を入れたもの、果物など次から次にお見舞いに持ってきてくれたので幸せな入院生活になりました。イギリスからget well wishesというカードが届きました。Thinking of you and hoping that you’ll soon be feeling much better.などと書かれています。絵手紙を習っている友達からは葉書に真っ赤なカーネーションと「笑顔まってます」と書いてありましたまた大きな封筒を開けると９０ｃｍX60ｃｍほどの和紙に３つの大きなチューリップとびっしり素敵な色合いのお花がいっぱい描かれたものが病院へ送ってきました。だからとても癒されました。もう元気です！昨夜から早速夕食も作りました。
