Frog killer fungus 'breakthrough'
New Zealand scientists have found what appears to be a cure for the disease that is responsible for wiping out many of the world's frog populations. Chloramphenicol, currently used as an eye ointment for humans, may be a lifesaver for the amphibians, they say. The researchers found frogs bathed in the solution became resistant to the killer disease, chytridiomycosis. The fungal disease has been blamed for the extinction of one-third of the 120 species lost since 1980. Space rocks go under the hammer
Some of the world's most famous meteorites have gone under the hammer at a New York auction house in what is said to be the first sale of its kind. The pieces were drawn from collections across the world and many examples are richly coloured and intricately patterned, some bearing gemstonesA piece priced at $1.1m (£0.53m) did not sell but an iron meteorite from Siberia fetched $123,000 (£60,000). And a US mailbox hit by a meteorite in 1984 sold for $83,000 (£40,000). I think the exercise helped me because after I exercise, I don't want junk food but I crave healthy food like stir-fry. I also quit (for the most part) eating lots of ice cream right before bed, ha-ha. I snack a lot during the day but have substituted cookies for mixed nuts and carrots. 運動したあとジャンクフードは食べたくない。野菜炒めのような健康的な食事がしたい。snackが動詞でも使えるのですね。substitute forの所、クッキーからナッツや人参に変えているのでしょうか。でも辞書によるとsubstitute A for B でBの代わりにAを用いるとありました。あれ？

China to clean up polluted lake
China is to spend millions of dollars in an effort to clean up one of its largest lakes, which has been severely polluted by years of waste dumping. An algae infestation earlier this year in Lake Tai, in Jiangsu province, led to a public panic and the suspension of water supplies from the lake. The province now plans to spend $14.5m (£7m) in a five-year plan to improve water quality and control polluters. More than 70% of China's rivers and lakes are badly polluted, figures show. Jiangsu's government announced the cleanup plan on its website. The plan would control the plant build-up in Lake Tai "in five years and realise the clear improvement of water quality," the government said in a statement. Organic food rule change warning
Food flown into the UK will be stripped of its organic status unless it meets new stricter ethical standards, the Soil Association has warned. The association, which certifies 70% of the UK's £1.9bn organic food sector, says firms must show trade brings real benefit to developing world farmers. It wants all air-freighted food to meet tough "ethical trade" standards. But Trade and Development Minister Gareth Thomas said he feared the changes could harm African farmers. The Soil Association says few overseas firms currently meet the planned new standards. The rules will affect the 1% of the organic food market in the UK which is flown in from abroad, about 80% of which comes from low to lower-middle income countries. Climate threat to biodiversity
Global temperatures predicted for the coming centuries could trigger a mass extinction, UK scientists have warned. The temperatures are within the range of greenhouse phases early in the Earth's history when up to 95% of plants and animals died out, they say. Experts examined the link between climate and diversity over 520 million years, almost the entire fossil record. They found that global diversity is high during cool (icehouse) periods and low during warm (greenhouse) phases. (BBC News)*****trigger（引金を引く、引き起こす）phase（段階、状態）＊＊＊＊＊バスから降りて国際通りを歩いて翌日はホテルからリムジンバスで空港まで行き荷物を預けてモノレールで首里駅まで行きました。そこから１５分位歩くとで円覚寺跡が見えてきました。首里城の石壁に感激して歩きすぎて守礼門まで出てしまい先に玉陵Tama-u-dunを見ました。Tama-u-dun was built in 1501 to re-entomb the remains of father King Sho En by King Sho Shin and has become the royal Mausoleum of the second Sho dynasty.と英語の説明、その大きな墓は三つに分かれ中央は洗骨前の遺骸を安置する所、１４年後洗骨をしたあと東に王と王妃、西に限られた家族が葬られているそうです。また墓の入り口には左右に墓守の２家族が住んでいたとのこと。沖縄戦で墓の破壊は酷かったけれど碑石は輝緑石という強い石のためそのまま残ったらしいまたまわりにはフクギが植えられていてその木にぶら下がっていたのはかわいいこおもり、きょろっとこちらを見てくれて目が合いました。

'Sleepless grumps' seen in brain
Brain scans can show how the brain gets "tired and over-emotional" when someone is deprived of sleep. US researchers kept volunteers awake for 35 hours and found huge increases in brain activity when shown images designed to make them angry or sad. The research in the journal Current Biology points to links between mental illness and sleep problems, they said. But a British expert said psychiatric problems could not be blamed solely on lack of sleep. (BBC News)*****deprive（取り上げる）psychiatric（精神医学の）blame（～のせいにする）solely（単独で、ただ、唯一）＊＊＊＊＊Aコース（南部戦跡めぐりと玉泉洞）に乗りました。最初に降りるのは旧海軍司令部壕です。小高い場所にあり眺めがとてもいいです。そこから階段を降りると作戦室、幕僚室、司令官室などがあり昨年から話題になった映画「硫黄島からの手紙」を思い出しました。このかまぼこ型の長いトンネルは３０００人の人が２ヶ月ほどで作られたとガイドさんが説明されました。そのあとひめゆりの塔へ行くと次々と若い人たちが花束を買って供えに歩いて行くので感動しました。平和祈念堂内は広く奈良の大仏様を思い出します。それから玉泉洞の中を歩き終えるとおきなわワールドへ出ました。２００年、１００年経った家がありますがその前に果物の王様ことあのドリアンがちょっとだけ詰めて（４００円）売っていたので頂きました。変なにおいがしたのですが食べると甘くておいしかったです。

Food cravings battle 'pointless'
Trying to cut out all thoughts of your favourite, fattening food may actually make you eat more, claims research. Women who tried to stop thinking about chocolate ate 50% more than those who were encouraged to talk about their cravings. This "rebound" effect could also apply to smokers, say the Hertfordshire University authors in Appetite journal. Experts at Weight Watchers said a "varied diet" was the best way to lose weight. (BBC News)*****crave（切望する）＊＊＊＊＊金曜日から沖縄へ飛びました。着陸体制に入ったころから海の色がとても美しく見えてきました。ホテルは何気なく海に近いラグナガーデンを選んで予約していました。リゾートエリアへの空港リムジンもあるし便利そうと思っていたのですが、そのリムジンバスはそれほどたくさんのアクセスがなかったので空港からモノレールに乗りました。バスターミナルのある旭橋で降りるとそこにコンベンションセンター（そのホテルの隣）行きのバスがありそれに乗りました。１０階の広い部屋から遠くにアメリカンビレッジや近くの海浜公園が見えて素敵でした。夕食のころには雨になり、１３階にある中華料理を食べました。翌日はバスターミナルまでバス（４５０円）で行きバスセンターからAコース（４８〇〇円）に乗りました。その前に時間があったので黒川紀章の設計した１４階建ての県庁の辺りを散歩しました。１４階の展望室へ上がろうと尋ねると本日は土曜日で閉鎖しておりますと、でも県庁を取り巻く石壁が気に入りました。

Stretching does not cut soreness
Stretching before or after exercise has little or no effect on subsequent muscle soreness, research shows. A Cochrane Collaboration analysis of 10 trials found stretching reduced soreness by less than one point on a 100-point scale. However, the researchers said it might be more help for people with reduced flexibility. And a UK expert stressed the main reason to stretch was to prevent injury, rather than soreness. (BBC News)*****subsequent（その後の、次の）soreness（うずき、痛み）＊＊＊＊＊先週、あのレニーから車の音が変だからと一緒にgarageに行ったら修理に２０万程掛かると言うのでもう車はやめてbike(bicycle)を買うことになり昨日一緒に自転車を買いに行きました。９０００円程であったので２年位使うのならこれで十分ですよと言われたのでその自転車にキテイちゃんのかわいい鍵が９８０円であったのでそれと登録料５００円で１０４８０円也。イギリスでも２，３万であるらしいです。そういえば数週間前イギリスでは郵便屋さんが１週間程ストライキがあり郵便が滞っていたらしいですね。日本はないからいいねって。昨日はフィットネスへ行ったら腰痛予防にジェットリフトを教えてもらいました。ダンベルを持って足にくっつけて膝まで来たら足をまげてすぐまっすぐな状態になるのです。昨日はたくさん筋トレやったからか筋肉痛で心地いい？かな。明日から数日お休みします。

Wealthy areas head alcohol table
Drinking at levels which are hazardous to health is rife in affluent middle class areas in England, research shows. Richer areas dominated the list of areas with the highest proportion of men drinking 22-50 units a week, and women drinking 15-35 units a week. However, Liverpool John Moores University found the proportion of those who drank to real excess was highest in poorer areas. (BBC News)*****affluent（裕福な）dominate（優位を占める、著しく目立つ）excess（過剰、過度）＊＊＊＊＊ニッポン天才伝（上山明博著）を読みました。幕末からの１６人の科学者の業績や略歴をとても興味深く紹介しています。金沢に１８５８年に生まれた科学の父こと桜井錠二の母は早くから子供の教育に努めた。特に英語の教育には熱心だったらしい。１１歳の時には藩立英学所に入学し、ネイティブの英語を学んだという。その後今の東大で科学を学びイギリスに１８８６年に留学したらしい。同じころ金沢に生まれた高橋謙吉はアメリカで研究し１９０１年にはアドレナリンを発見した。１８８３年に漆のラッカーゼ(laccase)の発見者吉田彦六郎、ビニロンの父桜田一郎、またライト兄弟（１９０３年）よりも早く模型飛行に成功（１８９１年）、その後日清戦争になるも有人動力飛行に成功したころライト兄弟の成功を新聞で知りショックを受けた二宮忠八、蓄電池の父島津製作所の島津源蔵、安藤博は小学生のころマルコーニの伝記を読んで感動し、無線通信に夢中になり１６歳で多極真空管を発明したという。その後エジソンやマルコーニに会いに行ったらしいなどと興味深いお話がありとても面白い本でした。

Why garlic is good for the heart
Researchers have cracked the mystery of why eating garlic can help keep the heart healthy. The key is allicin, which is broken down into the foul-smelling sulphur compounds which taint breath. These compounds react with red blood cells and produce hydrogen sulphide which relaxes the blood vessels, and keeps blood flowing easily. The University of Alabama at Birmingham research appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. However, UK experts warned taking garlic supplements could lead to side effects. (BBC News)*****crack（解明する）allicin（アリニン、にんにくの抗菌性物質）sulphur（硫黄）＊＊＊＊＊「複雑ネットワーク」とは何か（増田直紀、今野紀雄著）を読みました。まず、グラフ理論の始祖オイラーのことその理論の父ハラリーや数学者ケーリーなどの紹介がありハンガリーの統計物理学者バラバシがベキ則とは次数kが大きくなっていくと頂点数は少なくなっていくという。ネットワークの中には交友関係が広くて知っている人が多い人もいれば少ない人もいる。つまり頂点が１０００ならば次数がk=２としたら１０００Ｘ０．０３＝３０そのkがベキ数になる。３０歳前後の人の平均年収は４００～５００万らしい。おそらく同世代の人たちの半分以上が平均以下である。収入がつりがね則の分布は山頂からいっきに減速する。IT長者やイチローや松井秀樹などスポーツ選手が多くもらっているため平均を引き上げていると、「世界がもし100人の村だったら」などベキ則が象徴するように世界は不平等であると面白い説明があります。また、黒幕のお話も面白い、英語でmastermindと言うらしい。他人の精神をコントロールする人、またwirepullerとも言うらしい。また同じ性質や考えを持った人の集まりhomophily,性質の異なる人の集まりheterophilyなどと言うらしい。言葉も覚えて理解するには難しいけど面白い本でした。

Skies to be swept for alien life
The switch has been thrown on a telescope specifically designed to seek out alien life. Funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen the finished array will have 350 6m antennas and will be one of the world's largest. The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) will be able to sweep more than one million star systems for radio signals generated by intelligent beings. Its creators hope it will help spot definite signs of alien life by 2025.(BBC News)*****array（配列、アレイアンテナ）generate（生成する）＊＊＊＊＊昨日も筋トレへ行きました。いつも終わったらマッサージ機などで筋肉を和らげて帰る人がいるので私もたっぷりそれをして帰ったら筋肉痛があまりないのに気づきました。帰って夕食を作っているとあのレニーからメールがI think my car needs to go to be fixed. Do you know where I can take it?とそれで近くのガソリンスタンドでも行ったらとメールしたけど来て欲しそうだったので行きました。レニーもフィットネスに入っています。彼女が言うには家にいてもテレビはわからないし暇だとホームシックになるからフィットネスにはALTも沢山来ているのでそこでお喋りすると元気になると言います。きょうもフィットネスに行ったら次から次に友達が増えて楽しくなりました。ある人はここに来る前に１０キロ走ってここで３時間エアロビするという、ある人は朝４０分歩いてここのマシーンで４０分走って４０分筋トレしてまた夕方４０分歩く人もいます。皆運動してとても元気です。

Warmth makes the world more humid
The atmosphere is becoming more humid in a pattern consistent with man-made climate change, researchers have found. Their study, reported in the journal Nature, confirms the global increase in humidity found in previous studies. They say that the pattern of humidity increases in various parts of the world resembles that projected by computer models of man-made global warming. Water vapour is a greenhouse gas, and it is thought that having more of it in the air could amplify temperature rise. (BBC News)*****consistent（矛盾がない）vapour（蒸気）amplify（拡大する）＊＊＊＊＊９月２９日にぎっくり腰になって以来、フィットネスを休んでいました。でも今週の火曜日からまた通い始めました。火曜日にインストラクターにぎっくり腰になったことを相談するとお腹の筋肉を鍛えましょうと数種類のマシーンでトレーニング開始しました。スポーツ選手は腰を痛めた時は集中力で治すそうです。治すことに集中してくださいとアドバイスがありました。上下に歩くマシーンは特に腰に負担もなくいい汗がでて１キロほど痩せてしまいました。（笑）気をよくしてきょうも筋トレに行くつもりです。汗かいたあとシャワーするとストレスいっぱい解消しているようです。インストラクターから屈む時はいつも膝をまげてください。座っている時も歩く時もお腹に力を入れてくださいと言われたので最近注意しています。

Public 'misled' on exercise needs
"Misleading" government guidelines have led to many Britons wrongly believing that moderate exercise is as beneficial as a vigorous workout, a study alleges. In a survey of nearly 1,200 people, around half of men and three quarters of women thought moderate exercise conferred the greatest health benefits. Guidelines urge 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day five days per week. But the authors of the study, published in Preventive Medicine, said vigorous exercise was best for averting disease. I haven’t been to see Miss Potter. but I used to read her books as a kid and Clare had a cuddly Peter rabbit toy.などとすぐ返事がきました(cuddy?)ので、この写真皆喜ぶかもと思い、二人のALTにも出しました。するとI love the picture!!!とベッカムからdoes miss potter look like me? I don’t think so! I am not cute! he he、、you are so cute, that picture is very nice.とレニーからの返事。今朝はモントリオールに戻ったDanielleからSince we back, I am happy to see that Montreal is becoming a cycling city even if the bicycle path are not always convenient.と、え？モントリオールは自転車を使うようになったのでしょうか。地球温暖化のためでしょうか？

Poorer nations seek pain relief
Nearly 400 musical events are due to take place in around 85 countries to help raise awareness of the need for palliative care for the terminally ill. A report issued for World Palliative Care Day highlights the limited access to pain relieving drugs in the developing world. In much of Africa in particular, palliative care is in its infancy. But Ghana is one of the countries where efforts are now being made to bring it into the health system. According to the organisation Palliative Care Ghana, this is typical of societies where there is often little preparation for death. (BBC News)*****palliative（軽減する）＊＊＊＊＊レニーが演じる「ミス・ポター」を観に行きました。ピーターラビットの作者べアトリクス・ポターのお話です。上流階級の家庭に生まれたポターは幼いころから動物が家にいてウサギを上手に描いていたのですね。1866年に生まれ1943年に亡くなっています。そのころの日本の女性と言えば1878年に生まれて1942年に亡くなっている与謝野晶子を思い出しました。与謝野晶子も1903年ころ本を出していますがポターも1902年に彼女の絵の良さを理解して出版してくれた人に出会います。その素敵な人ノーマン演じるユアン・マクレガーが登場。でもふたりは結婚ができませんでした。44歳になって幼いころ湖水地方で出会った彼女の絵を理解してくれていた人と結婚します。最後が素晴らしいです。その湖水地方を開発しようとする人がいたのでポターは安定した著作権使用料と両親の遺産でその村を保存するためにそこを買い取るのです。イギリスの人はよくロンドンのような都会は嫌いだ。あの緑のいっぱいある田舎がいいと言います。それがポターが残したナショナルトラストであるらしいです。そんな素敵なお話を最後に聞きながら流れる曲は「When You Taught Me How To Dance」とても歌声が素敵で感激！

UK 'exporting emissions' to China
The UK's increasing dependence on Chinese goods is contributing to a rise in carbon emissions, a report suggests. The New Economic Foundation (Nef) says such reliance is adding to CO2 levels because China's factories produce more CO2 per item than British ones. The report also says many similar goods are both imported and exported, adding needlessly to CO2 output in transport. Over the last year, UK imports from China rose by 10% nearing 6.5 million tonnes, Nef reports.(BBC News)*****reliance（信頼、信用、よりどころ）needlessly（不必要な）output（生産）＊＊＊＊＊「地球持続学のすすめ」（武内和彦著）を読みました。著者は和歌山に生まれ幼少のころは質素な暮らしで自然や森とうまく付き合っていたとでもお父様が製鉄所に入られて暮しが楽になった反面その辺り煤煙公害になったらしい。そんな折、八幡製鉄所の煤塵に婦人会が立ち上がりそれを解決したという。沖縄での研究では植生（vegetation）の重要さ、赤土は植生が剥がされると降った雨に流される。その後オーストラリアでは18世紀からヨーロッパ人の開拓により砂漠化したフィールド調査、ザンビアでの樹木の研究中、物が不足しているためゴミのない社会を経験されたらしい。持っていった日本の食べ物のゴミや破れたシャツまでくださいと言われたらしい。低炭素社会をめざす（CO2の削減をしながら気候の安定化と豊かな人間生活と経済成長を続け余分な物の生産や消費を避け、必要な物だけを供給する。身の回りはシンプル、でも心は豊かという社会をめざすこと）中国は今大きな成長をしている。石炭石油製鉄など輸入し鉄は世界の７５％を消費。しかし人口増加と工業化で資源の枯渇や環境の汚染が進み100年以内に成長の限界を迎えるという。そこで東アジアにおける循環型社会の講演を天津でされたら大きな反響があったらしい。21世紀は人類が22世紀以降も存続できるかの岐路、低酸素社会と循環型社会と自然共生社会が統合されて地球持続可能な（sustainabiliy）社会をと著者はすすめられる。

Chilli compound fires painkiller
A chemical from chilli peppers may be able to kill pain without affecting touch or movement. This might in theory mean a woman in labour could have an epidural without losing the ability to move her legs, or the sensation of her baby being born. Conventional local anaesthetics affect all nerve cells. But the researchers Harvard team, writing in Nature, said that with capsaicin, the chilli chemical, they can target just pain receptors. However, a UK expert said it might be difficult to inject it safely. Virus jab may help combat cancer
A vaccine for a common virus is being used to stimulate the body's immune system to attack cancer cells. Initial tests show the vaccine - for the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) - has produced promising effects. Researchers recorded a heightened immune response to cancer cells infected with EBV. (BBC News)*****immune system（免疫システム）initial（初めの、最初の）EBV（伝染性単核症を引き起こすヘルペスウイルス）heighten（高める）＊＊＊＊＊昨日、have a strained backのこと書いたのでちょっとgoogleで検索してみました。するとそこにstrained backのことだけでなく様々な病状で海外の病院へ掛かる時、役立つ英会話が載っていました。それにその会話まで聞くことができます。最初に喘息のお話ですが、Patient / I've been wheezing since last fall. Doctor / Do you have any idea what's beencausing it?Wheezeという言葉聞いたことありますが、すぐには思い浮かびません。またbeencause（きっかけ）という単語知りませんでした。「発作」の言い方には、・attacks＝急に起こる発作・episodes継続している病気の経過中に起こる発作・bouts＝回復後、期間をおいて再び起こる発作・fits＝痙れんのような急で非常に短い発作があります。などととても詳細です。ホームページはこちらhttp://www.novartis.co.jp/english/index.html

Clue to chemistry of mini-strokes
Elevated levels of uric acid may be to blame for mini-strokes that potentially cause mental decline in ageing adults. Brain scans showed mini-strokes - white matter hypersensitivities (WMHs) - were more common among elderly patients with higher uric acid levels. Johns Hopkins University researchers believe diet, exercise and drugs could be used to cut levels of the compound - which causes gout. But in the journal Neurology they warn more research is needed. (BBC News)*****elevate（上げる）uric acid（尿酸）potentially（可能性を秘めて、もしかすると）hypersensitivity（感覚過敏の）gout（痛風、凝血）＊＊＊＊＊土曜日朝、掃除機をかけながら中腰で重いものを持っていたら、あの「魔女の一突き」にあいました。魔女の一突きとはhave a strained backこと、ぎっくり腰（突発性腰痛）です。医学書には２４時間絶対安静とあります。インターネットで検索すると３日間の安静がポイントですとありましたから昨日まではゆっくりしていました。日曜日にALTとお出かけする約束だったのですがまたもやドタキャンしてしまいました。するとＣメールでits ok, hope u feel better and we will see you soon.などと二人から優しいメールが届きました。２週間前からフィットネスでエアロビ初級１時間、中級１時間したりジャズダンス、ラテンエアロビまであって楽しくなってドンドンやりすぎたからこんなことになったのかなと思っています。運動はほどほどがいいみたいです。
