Word Watching
■ hear over [through, on] the grapevine うわさや口コミで知る
1) Another way to say you heard a rumor or somebody told you
something is to say "a little bird told me," and then pass on the
news.
2) A more formal way to say this is "anonymous sources." And
that on the news for example.
a reliable source said 信頼できる情報筋によれば
■ jump ship 転職をする、急に会社をやめる
もともとは「（船員が）契約期間を満たさずに船を降りる」「（無断で）
持ち場を去る」といった意味
似た様な意味で、 bail out （飛行機のパイロットなどが）緊急脱出を
する、というフレーズもある
3) "Jump ship" could be, because the ship is in a bad condition
because the working conditions are no good, but it could also be
because some other place or different ship or a port has much
better conditions.

4) Another way people say this is "catch up with someone" or
"catch up with each other."

5) In school in the U.S., kids learn about some rhetorical devices
"as "or "like " in it. So for example, you could describe someone is
being as tough as leather. And it doesn't mean their skin is hard.
It means they're very tough character they're not easily stopped
or hurt.
6) The only problem with using similes and metaphors is that the
best ones are used again and again and again. And often turn into
cliche.

7) Sphere is kind of a difficult pronounce word even for English
speakers and it means uh...a ball something round and three
dimensional. You can talk about "atmosphere," "stratosphere"
or even "sphere of influence," which is used a lot in international politics.

10) The licensing of nurses in the U.S. is controlled by each states
separately. So there are differences from state to state. But
generally registered nurses do a three or four year course. Many
of them earn B.A.'s, but the uh first four years of college. They are
also licensed practical nurses and they do a shorter course. They
always work together with a nurse or a doctor. And more recently
nurse practitioner has become a little bit more common. And they
have still more training and can do some of the basic tasks that
doctors used to handle.
