Focus on Jobs The pendulum swings back to jobs this week. Meanwhile, Fed officials will again be out in force, with many public engagements. Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 were essentially flat, while the Nasdaq gave back 0.65%. So far this year, the Dow is up 8.7%, the S&P 500 is higher by 12.9%, and the Nasdaq boasts a gain of 16.4%. On the economic calendar, the big day this week is Friday, with the release of the September nonfarm payrolls report. As usual, other labor-market benchmarks will come out just ahead of the big report. On Tuesday, the job openings report will be released; on Wednesday, the ADP private payrolls report is due; and on Thursday, weekly jobless claims (which have risen in importance) hit the tape. Turning to other data, the Atlanta Fed GDPNow measure calls for GDP of 3.3% in the third quarter. That is the same as last week's forecast. The Cleveland Fed Inflation Nowcast calls for CPI of 3.0% in September, also the same as last week. Mortgage rates have inched higher, with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage now at 6.3%, according to FreddieMac. Gas prices stayed even week over week, at an average of $3.17 per gallon for regular gas. Looking ahead, the next Federal Reserve interest-rate decision comes on October 29. Odds are at 88% for another 25-basis-point rate cut, according to the CME FedWatch rate tool. After that, the last meeting of the year is on December 10, and odds are at 64% for a third 25-basis-point cut. Taking a deeper dive into performance, U.S. stocks are lagging global stocks. A leading industrialized global stock market index, the ETF EFA, has surged 22% year to date, while the leading emerging market ETF EEM has gained 26%. U.S. growth stocks, with a year-to-date gain of 14% (ETF IWF), have taken the edge over value stocks (ETF IWD), which have booked an advance of 10%. In other asset classes for the year to date, AGG bonds are up 3%, gold is up 46%, crude oil is down 7%, and Bitcoin is up 17%. The U.S. dollar is down 10%, tracking DXY. The VIX Volatility Index is at 16, below its historical average of 20. Looking at leading and lagging sectors so far in 2025, Communication Services is the top performer, with a 28% gain, followed by Industrials (+16%) and Information Technology (+20%), all outperforming the S&P 500. Financials (+12%) and Materials (+9%) are just below the index, while defensive sectors like Energy, (+3%), Consumer Staples (+3%), Real Estate (+2%), Consumer Discretionary (+6%), and Healthcare (-1%) are at the bottom of the list.
