4A word of caution; if positive visualizations work so would the negative ones. Negative thoughts activate the right prefrontal cortex area. Therefore, by focusing on negative thoughts the person’s depression would exacerbate. This IS the time one should visualize something happy.Don’t say “It is easy for you to say, but....” because someone who had achieved the technique is right here writing this essay. This brings back to Ms. Begley’s article in the TIME magazine: With help and encouragement of the Dalai Lama, Dr. Davidson had tested Buddhist monks who have had over 10,000 hours of meditation. The result of the fMRI (functional MRI) revealed that the monks with positive visualization during the session activated their left prefrontal cortex (associated with happiness) to expand and overwhelmed the right prefrontal cortex as well. The author suggests therefore, by training the brain, human has possibilities to increase happiness that envelopes even negativity. If we are able to do this it is likely to cure depression and mentally related illnesses with meditation and not medication. (One click for my popular vote please!)

Gregg got an exclusive contract with a gallery in Los Angeles and will have a special opening this Saturday. We went to deliver a few paintings but the road to the gallery was blocked off due to a film location. We had to detour by complicated way to the gallery. But we were practically next to the Little Tokyo, so we stopped by at our favorite sushi shop and had early dinner. Yes, we had sushi, again. Anyway, I am busy finishing Gregg’s business tax return and summer Art Festival application, so I will post the conclusion tomorrow. Please enjoy my daughter’s dog’s video at her BLOG site. It is funny. You can see many of her new hobbies: her own creations of video and music.http://www.stonefalconproductions.com/index.htm (One click for my popular vote please!)

(続く)Even when he said “Do you think you can go to college with your English? Suppose you get in, you’ll never get out,” I continued to visualize like I was getting degree with A-average grade, or teaching in a class room. As a result, I did graduate UCI with A-average and began teaching Japanese in public high school as well as a private college.I used the same technique to raise my children. Whenever they said “I can’t do it,” I respond by saying, “Don’t say you can’t without trying. Try at least once. Next, imagine you can do and try again.”Whether my method worked, or not my daughter became an animation director, who created a worldly known animation, as she wished as a child. As for my son he used to say,“I won’t marry until I buy my own house. I will marry with a smart and beautiful girl with blonde and blue eyes. She has to be a compatible talker.“Wow, that’s a chock full,” I said.“You were the one who told me to wish big, weren’t you?” As he said, he bought his house at 28 and fulfilled all other wishes. During the poverty era after the war (in Japan) there wasn’t much piano left in our town except for one in school, one in a doctor’s house and another in our Mayor’s house. I drew keyboard on paper and played on it while humming. I could hear the perfect pitch. Even during high school, single mother’s household continued to be poor. But my keyboard was always in my head and during bus ride I pretended to be asleep while my imagination was freely composing and playing the piano. When I decided to live in the United States, I didn’t think about lack of airfare, but rather I was imagining myself communicating fluently in English. Even after I came to the United States I lived positively using the same technique. I was determined to go to university one day though my ex-husband was laughing at my idea. (One click for my popular vote please!)[エッ!

(続く)Originally, I was writing something else, but while I was reading commentaries suddenly I wanted to write actual examples of ‘positive thinking,’ so I rewrote three times (This is the luxury of PC). In hope that some people would benefit I share my own experiences instead of just commenting about TIME magazine articles. As many of you、 who read my profile and/or my books may already know that; I’ve lived in the US for 43 years; I became a college student at 49, graduated at 53 and became a teacher. I’ve been teaching piano for 35 years. No matter how devastating stage of my life I always visualized my ideal life in meditation. That was, instead of praying God to grant me a wish I enjoyed imagining already living in my ideal life.Like the joy of imaginary play of infants. (English BLOG at the bottom) Now, I leap from Mr. Pinker’s article, which I wrote two days ago, to Sharon Begley’s ‘How the Brain Rewires Itself’. I was especially interested in the experimentation of visualization test by scientists. In her article she wrote about an experiment conducted by Dr. Pascual-Leone in Harvard Medical School in which volunteers to learn and practice a five-finger piano exercise. They worked daily for two hours. Five days later they took a TMS test to see the function of neurons.Astonishing result revealed. The scientists found that the stretch of motor cortex devoted to these finger movements took over surrounding areas. More amazing was that when another group of volunteers who exercised piano by simply ‘imagining’ got a similar test result. This is where I found the power of visualization to be true. (One click for my popular vote please!)↑私のデジブック・サイトです。

Forgive me for suddenly shifting from Pinker’s essay to a video we watched last night but I promise it is connected to the topic I began, yesterday. It was a Spanish drama based on a true story called ‘The Sea Inside.’ Ramon was a quadriplegic due to a diving accident and was bedridden for nearly three decades. He was quite educated and philosophical person who was well liked by many. Ramon leads a 30-year campaign by every possible means to win the right to end his life with dignity. All his family members loved him and tried their best to stop him from ending his life. In the course of this campaign two women even fell in love with him. He influenced the women to achieve their dream. Finally Ramon was granted his wish in the end.The movie was well done, artistically and even romantically. He got his wish but with loving family members and friends’ emotional expense. In his case, he was able to breathe on his own, think and talk but could not do anything else. Decision to die is a complex issue that involves many people and should not be taken lightly. (One click for my popular vote please!)↑私のデジブック・サイトです。

(続く)You exist, right? Prove it.This is how Steven Pinter writes about brain functions in his article ‘The Mystery of Consciousness’ in Time magazine. There are too many interesting topics within, so I will divide into several BLOGS--adding my thoughts. The first topic was about a young woman who had survived a car crash that crushed parts of her brain. Five months later she opened her eyes but did not respond to sights, sounds or jabs. In other words, she was in a vegetated state. But when researchers tested her brain using MRI, simultaneously with a healthy volunteer, the result was not much different. The main method of testing was done by voice command to imagine certain thing. Even in vegetated state, brain functions the same way with normal person. This means the injured woman may still have consciousness, Pinker wrote. I think this raise a legal question regarding euthanasia because if patient has consciousness, it could be a murder.(Continues)毎回ポチと押してくださると書くエネルギーになります。 (One click for my popular vote please!)

But this is an astonishing development. As I wrote in the BLOG two days ago, I think he got smarter after the fire incident. When the plumber came, (read yesterday’s BLOG) he warned me,“The washing machine’s hoses are likely to burst if you don’t shut off the main. Make sure to shut off after each use.” So I told Gregg about it. (I have been telling him for 10 years, but so far the hoses are okay, so he didn’t believe me.) Normally he would say,“Yes, Mrs. Know-it-all,” and ignored, but this time he said, “Okay”and immediately followed the rule.Well, “Old dog can learn a new trick” after all. This has to be celebrated! My niece began laughing before she even started to talk.“Well, for *7-5-3 celebration, I wanted to take an official photo of Hana, so I dressed her nicely and handed to her socks to wear by herself.”“Is that funny?”“Listen to the end.”“Oh, excuse me!”“I had to do something else, so I went to kitchen and returned to where Hana was........” When she came to this point, she began laughing hysterically and couldn’t continue, so I think I will have to finish the story. When my niece returned to the room, Hana was not wearing socks on her feet. So, what happened? She put socks on her arms and was dusting everywhere! Apparently she observed her mom dusts with used old socks that way and Hana suddenly remembered that!Needless to say we burst with laughter!*(This is an old Japanese custom to celebrate thanking for their health. Originally 7 and 3 year-old female children and 5year-old boy celebrated. (One click for my popular vote please!)

東京を喰った犬(後編)(Conclusion: Continued from yesterday)“This dog looks like Kenji”said Gregg pointing at the DVD case.“Well, because it IS Kenji. It’s boring to just give you a coupon in an envelope.”It sounds like her. This kind of trick is a piece of cake for her.As for the coupon, it was a Net Video rental that started a few years back. First, you go to the site and type in the given ID that will open to the huge video list. Just by clicking what you want the video will come to your mail box in a few days. You can rent as many as ten at a time and you can keep it for weeks at a time. When finished, put the video back in a provided return envelope and put it in your own mail box. What a great service! In other words, it was a system that you can rent any video without leaving your house.Since she gave us this gift for three months, Gregg and I are not “Eating Tokyo” but watching all we can every day. This is my daughter’s humor. (One click for my popular vote please!)

東京を喰った犬 (前編)The Dog Who Ate Tokyo (English version at the bottom)私には、アニメの監督をしてる娘がいる。 (続く)I have a daughter who is an animation director. This child, I mean she is already 38, has been quite witty and creative since she was young and often surprises us with unique ideas. When she came to our house last Christmas, for example, she turned off all the lights in the family room and replaced them with nearly twenty candle lights.“Voila! Now we have a Christmas mood!”And she gave Gregg a DVD titled “The Dog Who Ate Tokyo”......that’s what we all thought. But there was a video rental coupon inside.(To be continued)毎回ポチと押してくださると書くエネルギーになります。 (One click for my popular vote please!)

Pick Up DayThis is Gregg’s 9th year as a full time artist. We as a team have done so many shows in both side of the border. We have delivered paintings, installed and prepared opening receptions for countless times. But pick up day always gives us a certain feeling of sadness and satisfaction of mission accomplished. We just finished one show in Laguna Beach. This morning, Gregg went to Los Angeles to pick up his work from another show that ended. (One click for my popular vote please!)

(完)Generally speaking, American hospitals, especially private hospitals, depend on donations so it is predictable that economically wealthy districts produce fancier hospitals. And to prevent bankruptcy they work hard at attracting patients to their hospitals, like tactics used by hotels. It is no wonder that they incorporate services beyond sick patients. Is this Darwinian’s ‘Survival of the fittest’ syndrome? Who knows? They might even include sport gym and restaurant in the future. Most American born doctors are friendly but even, recently increased, immigrated Asian doctors are trying to be friendly. I think this indicates their effort not to lose their patients. In any case, this is advantageous to patients. In this era even mortuaries advertise on TV, so nothing is wrong if doctor’s office advertises other services. The problem is that we came to the point of outrageous hospital competition in order to survive; spending millions of dollars for superficial face lift instead of spending on research for cure, or to lower the ridiculously high medical cost. What’s next? It is scary to predict the future.I t all boils down to human ‘greed’, I suppose. When I see the colossal discrepancy, between this luxurious Hospital-Department store and fly infested tent hospitals in which doctors have to treat desperate patients without proper medical facilities, I think the ‘Armageddon’ is inevitable.★マイミクのキルケさんは、内科医です、興味おありのかたは1月10日のブログをお読みになってください。 (One click for my popular vote please!)

病院デパート(その・4)Hospital-Department store #5 We don’t need televisions in waiting room; pleasant and comforting music is enough. Cosmetics? Nah! If dermatologist is in the team keep the cosmetic case only in her/his office. For the replacement of my retired doctor a female doctor was introduced. She is a conscientious doctor and I like her.“So, how do you like this mammoth hospital?” I asked.“For the first few weeks I was thinking ‘What was I thinking?’ but, now I am appreciating the comfort of team works. Because no frustration of self management,” she said.In other words, there is no emergency call while she is vacationing because other doctors would cover her patient. For example, I also had a team of three gynecologists and the doctor who delivered my son was not my main doctor. True, doctors are people, too, so I understand their point of view but for patient it is a bit insecure feeling and a disappointment.

病院デパート(その・3)Hospital-department store (#3 English version at the bottom.) My name was called and entered the room. The nurse checked my weight and blood pressure but with automated machine. As soon as she wrapped the pad around my arm, she turned to a computer and began typing-in D.O.B., address and date of hospitalization, etc. She asked these questions without turning around. “Okay, doctor will come shortly.”With a quick smile, she left. How mechanical was that?Suddenly, the computer screen changed to an advertisement board. “Before you leave, how about skin care? We can sand your pock marks and pimple marks to your satisfaction.”“Are you stressed? No problem. We have sauna and massage.” “We remove your spots and wrinkles in no time.”“We have aroma therapy, too.” Enough already! I thought....but it continued. “You don’t need glasses anymore. With LESAR, we can restore your vision.” Is this a hospital, or a department store? I was flabbergasted.

病院デパート(その・2)Hospital-department store (Continued from previous day)It was a mammoth hospital, so I had to ask the direction to my doctor’s office. I began walking seemingly endless maze, to the left and to the right, like a hamster in cage.Along came another lobby with a fabulous sculpture and a huge Christmas tree. I took an elevator next to the lobby and got off at the said floor. Since I saw a row of incubators it must have been a maternity ward. Even with appointment, one has to wait for at least 30minuts at any doctor’s office. When I entered the waiting room, I was surprised again. There were three Plasma TVs so that every person can see from where they sat although no one was watching. And, like a cosmetic department store, there was a glass case with bunch of organic cosmetics. On the left, there was an antique shelf full of children’s books and stuffed animal arranged in a professional way. (One click for my popular vote please!)

The fair amount of uniformed nurses and wheel chair traffic indicate that it is a hospital, but otherwise there is check-in counter in lobby and fancy couches, large television and strategically placed beautiful plants in lounge, like most hotels. In addition, there are flower shop and convenient store, too.My doctor had relocated her office in such hospital; I went for my yearly check up.In the lobby of the hospital, volunteers in Aloha shirts welcomed me at reception desk.“I feel like I came to a hotel in Hawaii,” said I.“We try to make a lighter and brighter atmosphere,” said the volunteer.(continues)

DaffodilIn the field across where I used to live, there was a pretty wild Daffodil. The lone flower multiplied in number of years.Wind carried a faint, sweet fragrant when it blew.No matter how beautiful it was,I never snipped off and brought in home. Many people could enjoy if I leave them alone. It was my daily joy to watch them from windows during the season. Then one day, I could see no more.Without seeing them closer,I knew because it was the end of the season, Still, sad.....just the same. But I also knew that the Daffodils were gone,so they can come back again.*This is my tribute to a BLOG friend, Daffodil, who suddenly passed on this morning. (One click for my popular vote please!)

As an elementary school child, I used to gather neighborhood children and played “teacher” but who would have guessed that I’d be a teacher in America one day? Yes, I like teaching but there is another reason why I decided to teach Japanese in a foreign land half a century later; I did not want to lose my native tongue. Living in white society, I was speaking nothing but English, day and night. Reading Japanese books I brought from Japan and to correspond in Japanese with my family were the only way to maintain my Japanese. There were two Japanese people in my town, but their Japanese was already strange. Worse yet, we understand each other when we use English for forgotten Japanese vocabularies, so that did not help to maintain my language. My decision to become an educator prompted me to re-study Japanese seriously. It is not easy to teach one’s native language to foreigners. I believe it is very important to include culture study when teaching foreign language, so I do KAKIZOME (a ritual of writing one’s wish in calligraphy form on the 2nd day of January). This was Alex’s second experience. Her conversational skill has improved quite well. Although its stroke order is not correct, her letters show her confidence. Lauren began Japanese only four months ago, but already her listening skill went up amazingly fast. I translated their choice of words into Kanji and they just copied my samples on a board. (One click for my popular vote please!)

Nothing stays the same. While Japanese New Year begins with somewhat serious attitude, American New Year begins with lively Rose Parade. My memory of Japanese New Year began with changing PJ to the very best attire in the shivering cold morning and said, “Happy New Year” to my parents with a very formal manner. Compare to this, most Americans have fun in the New Year’s Eve and family members get up at any time they choose on the New Year’s Day. It is not unusual to sleep till late afternoon. Since many years ago, I, too, began watching parade on TV in bathrobe while sipping tea.Pasadena Rose Parade has 118 year-old history. Fabulous floats proceeded one after another. Often, there are foreign entries and I was quite excited to see a Japanese entry some years ago. At the same time, I noticed something significant in the Japanese young ladies. Around the time I left Japan (1964), only stage dancers wore mini-skirts and showed bare legs in public eyes. I realized a big leap in the Japanese society when I saw young ladies showing healthy thigh, twirling batons and parading with such confidence. Whenever I watched TV in PJ on the New Year’s Day, somewhere deep inside me, a tiny guilt always lingered “Where’s your Japanese modesty?” But that thought had vanished the moment I saw the Japanese ladies in the parade. Nothing stays the same. We all change in the flow of time. (One click for my popular vote please!)
